The parents of an 8-year-old boy who wants to live and be treated as a girl have been working with the Douglas County School District to allow their child to attend school as a girl.
The child attended the unnamed school two years ago, and the family and the district have been talking since last fall about the child re-enrolling, said district spokeswoman Whei Wong.
"The discussion has been how best to do it," Wong said Thursday. The goal, she said, is "to ensure the kid feels safe physically and emotionally and other kids don't feel threatened in any way."
Wong said some parents have contacted school officials asking for clarification and direction. "Some parents are really concerned and freaked out about it."
A concerned parent, who asked not to be identified, told 9News, "I see this as being a very difficult situation to explain to my daughter . . . why someone would not want to be the gender they were born with."
A national nonprofit group, TransYouth Family Advocates, has provided assistance in handling the situation.
Transgender children, who are born as one sex and identify with the other, are not uncommon but are not understood by parents and society, TransYouth president Shannon Garcia said.
Parents "don't understand this is a health condition. They don't know why their children are like this, and they don't know where to find help," she said.
Society fears "what they don't understand," she said. "Gender identification and sexual orientation are two very different things."
Laura Thor, a Denver licensed clinical social worker, said parents of transgender children "are relying on the goodness and tolerance of the rest of the public to respond to this child favorably."
Schoolmates and their parents need help in becoming less uncomfortable with the child's looking different and being called by a different name, Thor said.
Of course it would, if they were really concerned about the child.
But since that's not what they're doing, the kid is obviously being used to further who know who's homosexual agenda. Clearly nobody has the kid's best interest at heart.
Yep - my thoughts exactly. of course, if that’s true, then the media certainly can’t let it get out. It would only prove us intolerant moralists right.
Why do these issues have to be pushed on to children that are trying to lead normal lives?

I have 20 year old nephew whose mother treated him more like a girl from infancy, girl toys (dolls, toy kitchen) etc. Father mostly absent. And guess what he turned gay!
I would have explained that God made girls and boys to think differently because girls grow up to be mommies and boys grow up to be daddies. They need to be able to think differently to be a better mommy or daddy. It helps prepare them for being an adult when they do different jobs as parents.

TKPRF is aware that sex and gender are seen and used interchangeable in legal arenas. These two entities are very separate and need to be divided.
They are correct in that "gender" is a property ascribed to words and property, "sex" is a property ascribed to living things.

You don’t put a kid into school as the opposite gender without a significant long history of gender identity issues. Including living at home as the opposite gender and having been observed to only be exhibiting typical opposite gender behaviour over several years.
If this has been brewing for 4 years it’s one thing but 4 months would be something totally different.
Aside from body image stuff, is there any other instance in which we indulge obviously delusional people? If I insisted I were Napoleon, would they let me rule France?

I’m probably one of the most libertarian FReepers when it comes to “social issues”. But in the absence of a clear diagnosis by at least 2 physicians of a gender-related genetic and/or anatomical abnormality, it is extremely harmful to a child to encourage them to take seriously their fantasies of being a member of the opposite sex. No way should taxpayer-funded schools be participating in inflicting this harm.
Public schools (until we get rid of them) should not pressure children to engage in stereotypically gender-specific activities, and should be generally supportive of children who want to play in ways that are usually associated with the opposite sex. If a little boy likes playing with dolls and is being harassed by other boys and/or girls because of this, the proper role of school staff is help the boy stand up for his rights to do as he pleases within the limits of rules that apply to everyone — not to agree with the boy or his parents to systematically lie to all the children (and the boy himself) by calling him a girl.

During college I had a white friend who said that as a child she’d always thought South Asians (e.g. Indians) were more attractive than white people, and imagined she’d turn darker as she grew up. She also said she’d gotten over this before she finished elementary school.
I hesitate to make such an accusation. We don't really know the details of the case -- the kid probably is a psychological mess, and there could even be physiological reasons behind it. Or it could all be a ploy ... but why would the parents do that?
As an example, I'm thinking of "Tula" (Carolyn Cossey), a transsexual who actually posed in Playboy, back in the early '90s. He/she started life as a hermaphrodite, and her parents were given the choice between "boy" and "girl." They chose "boy," but Cossey later said he/she was really a girl inside....
Who's to say what's right, in a situation like that?
I don’t think this is a case of a true hermaphrodite; it sounds more like a case of political activism.
Situations like that are not all that common and need to be dealt with privately, within the family. I see no need to go around announcing it to the whole world, making a political agenda out of it, and forcing changes in laws etc. That’s what’s bothering most people about this.
Too many people today have this martyr complex and are trying to rearrange the whole world to suit them, instead of accepting what can’t be changed and living with it.
If someone comes up to me and looks and acts female, that’s how I treat them. If they are a hermaphrodite, that’s a sad situation and I feel sorry for them. I don’t want, nor need, to know what they’ve had to go through, and their whole medical and sexual history.
