Republican John McCain asked disgruntled conservatives to support his presidential bid on Thursday, shortly after Mitt Romney ended his struggling campaign and made McCain the all-but-certain nominee.
McCain assured a conference of conservative activists he was one of them, citing his commitment to win in Iraq, halt Iran's nuclear ambitions and rein in the federal government while drawing sharp contrasts with potential Democratic opponents Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.
McCain's speech, which drew boos on the topic of illegal immigration, followed by a few hours Romney's surprise announcement at the conference that he was ending his run to allow Republicans to focus on the November election.
"I feel I have to now stand aside, for our party and for our country," the former Massachusetts governor told the shocked crowd, some of whom gasped and shouted "No, no!" in response.

2008—the year over half of the voters of this country have NO candidate
I like this. I’ll vote for McAmesty when pigs fly and Satan goes to work on ice skates. But I’ll go to polls to vote for conservatives in house and senate if possible.
One thing about Republicans -- we give our candidates a second (and sometimes third) chance. In fact, it almost seems that you have to have lost a previous race in order to get the nomination. Nixon won the nomination in 1968, after having lost the 1960 Presidential election and the 1962 California Governor's race. Reagan won the nomination in 1980, after having lost a late bid for the nomination in 1968, and a more serious battle in 1976. George H. W. Bush won the nomination in 1988 after having lost two Senate races and the 1980 Presidential nomination. Dole won the 1992 nomination having previously lost the nomination battle in 1980. And now McCain, loser in the 2000 nomination battle, will be the 2008 nominee.
Evidently, my Party likes battle-hardened warhorses.
She is already running as a Democrat.
So you rather would see our troops being commanded by Hillary or a creepy Crypto-Muslim? It will be another vote for the lesser evil, but we have no choice. McCain is still better than Hillobama!
I second that.
Excuse me?
WTF are you talking about?
And good, so you do understand stubborn.
Now the question is: do you understand stubborn born out of years of nose holding and betrayal?
Cause that's stubborn on a whole new level.
There are still too many people here on Free Republic who don’t know about the aftermath of the full implementation of the Fairness Doctrine and the creation and passing of legislation which will give illegal immigrants the legal right to vote in all future U.S. elections. The upcoming “mess” that’s truly coming to this country will be enormous!
There you go. I saw, is it, “Shelby” Steele earlier today, saying he thought folks should unify behind McCain now. I didn’t care to see that.
BTW, good tagline. SAT
No to Hillobama in 2008!
This isnt going to be a hold your nose November. Its going to be a hold your nose, cover your ears, shut your eyes, blot out your memories and do the best you can to control your bowels November. DoughtyOne
If I decide to vote 'R' in November it will only be AGAINST 'D' not for McCainiac.
@#$% him.
I will not be voting for McCain and I will not cast a vote against someone else.
The party has left me with no party.
Maybe someone will run as a 3rd option that I can vote for, otherwise I am not voting for McCain.
We'll get that also with Hillary or Obama. An emboldened conservative presence in Congress can stop an Amnesty push by a President McCain. Bush also was ready to sign Amnesty, but failed. We have to strengthen conservatives in all local/state and Congressional elections, while voting for McCain just to prevent Hillobama. Too much is at stake!
There is no difference between those three except that McCain has also mental problems. I would not vote for any of them.
Since McCain think Alito is too conservative just what type of judges to you expect him to offer up?
