Weep for Texas - John Cornyn endorses McCain
email from Sen Cornyn | 7 Feb 2008 | John Cornyn

Posted on 02/07/2008 5:35:31 PM PST by Manfred the Wonder Dawg

I wanted to tell you personally about a conversation that I had with Senator McCain earlier today before his CPAC speech.

In this time of war and economic uncertainty, America must have strong, principled leadership. The first and foremost priority of the federal government is National Security, and, we must have a President who will do what is needed to protect America and the American people. It is imperative that we have a Commander in Chief who will not bow to pressure when the political waters become rough. As a fellow member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I have witnessed John McCain’s principled leadership on critical national security issues.

I, like most of you, am deeply concerned with wasteful and excessive Washington spending, and I have also worked side by side with John McCain taking on special interests and fighting the tough battles on behalf of the American taxpayer. While it is true that we have had some principled disagreements on some issues, including certain areas of immigration reform, John McCain is a man of principle and conviction. He shares my deep commitment to reaching a comprehensive solution to immigration reform and I look forward to working with him on this issue when he is President.

With the recent decision by a number of the other candidates to step aside, now is the time for the Republican Party to come together and stand behind Senator McCain. For these reasons, I am honored to endorse him for President of the United States today and will do whatever I can to support his candidacy.

Sincerely, John Cornyn

I heard some scuttlebutt, I believe it was on Levin’s show about McCain possibly asking Kay Bailey Hutchinson to be Veep

That was Steve Forbes saying that, and I don't buy it.

This isn’t going to be a hold your nose November. It’s going to be a hold your nose, cover your ears, shut your eyes and by all means blot our your memories November.

It's going to be a grab-your-ankles November.

That's a non-starter. Under normal circumstances she wouldn't even be on a secondary list of Veep candidates.

She is from a state that will already vote Republican, she is certainly no movement conservative, and, being from Texas, she will be tied to Big Oil.

Finally, this affirmative-action mindset of "We've got to find a Woman or a Black or a Latino or a Blue-Eyed Martian" is detestable.

They all have to say that now. Just let them know you don’t agree and will not join them in voting for him.

You probably haven't seen it yet, but that former statement is no longer operative. I had to revise and extend my remarks. I see your active mind had already gone there. Good call...

This isn’t going to be a hold your nose November. It’s going to be a hold your nose, cover your ears, shut your eyes, blot out your memories and do the best you can to control your bowels November.  DoughtyOne

“I certainly can’t say I like McCain much overall, but he is far, FAR superior to the Demoncrats and I will vote for him if he is the GOP candidate.”

My concern is that he doesn’t listen to the people and his method of compromise is to give Kennedy what he wants.

Kelly Ann said that on Fox this afternoon. That’s just what he needs; the pro-abortion, pro-pornography, Senator from American Airlines on the ticket with him. That would make things better.

“I wrote him back, explaining why I could not join him in this endeavor”

Then you should reconsider for the sake of the country and the sake of the troops.

WE NEED TO WIN THE WAR.

If you turn tail and run then America is lost.

Because that is what you are doing. You are deserting the field and leaving it open to for the opposition to take.

Cornboy has dissed conservatives.

I will vote against him in the next primary challenge he faces.

At least you can make cases for Obama (most electric, though empty, politician in the country) and Hillary ("smartest woman in the world" and married to the first black President). There is nothing distinguishing about KBH, except her genitals. Same with any other token woman or minority we could choose, except for Condi or Mel Martinez.

“Any chance you are related to him?”

Probably just on the payroll. (The only way he can think of to try and gain the confidence of conservatives! Don’t expect it to be by his reputation or his voting record or his joinedatthehipbuddy Ted “The Swimmer”!) LOL!

My concern is that he doesn’t listen to the people and his method of compromise

Often this is true and this is why I don't like him much.

However, compromise with the left is better than actively promoting leftist positions like Her Heinous, although again I emphasize I don't like the compromise to the degree that McCain has engaged in.

But I believe that McCain is going to feel fire from the right as Pres. and we won't see him so squishy as in the past.

>> I know I would put McCain above at least 3 of those.

I would respectfully point out that two of the ones you mention couldn’t even get themselves elected POTUS.

Is that the point you’re trying to make? That McCain is a deserving guy, but unelectable?
