Romney Speech at CPAC 2008 - Magnificent: Why save the best for last?
self | 2-7-08 | self

Posted on 02/07/2008 10:58:47 AM PST by Bronco_Buster_FweetHyagh

As I watched Mitt Romney speak at CPAC 2008, and announce the suspension of his campaign, I realized that it was the first moment I actually liked him and felt like he might be a good candidate for president.

He was direct, clear, conservative and most of all, compelling. It was by far the best speech he has given to date.

It reminded me of Al Gore in his final concession speech after the Florida debacle, to the extent that it was the first time I thought Gore gave a good speech (even though he's an arrogant liberal scumbag, it was a good speech).

Romney, why did you wait til your concession speech to truly lead?

Vote Huckabee. He has almost no shot at getting the delegates to win . . . and so a vote for Huck is a protest vote against McCain and has the effect of getting us to a contested convention without either candidate having a clear claim to the nomination . . . and so a dark horse possibility. Picture a CONSERVATIVE taking on Obama or Hillary. And pray.

Where have you been? All his speeches of late have been good. I think his message was cluttered among the BS spewing from Huckabee and the others that the MSM picked up on. ALSO, clearly there was a behind the scenes effort on the part of the DEMs to discredit him and get him off the ticket.

McCain is going to look arthritic next to Obama. If he has that idiot Huckabee with him, they’ll look like Laurel and Hardy.

If you were paying attention in 1994 it was considered the CONSERVATIVE position that government stay out of abortion.

Oh please. Romney's position in 1994--as described by him--was "pro-choice".

If you're pro-abortion, you're not conservative.

Whether you like Romney or hate him it was a really good speech. Have you heard anything as inspiring come out of Hillary or any other politician lately?

I never much liked the Romulan from the beginning but I have to reluctantly agree that the speech today was one for the books! And, listening to it, I now admit that I will have to elevate his status from Romulan to Vulcan...the speech was that good!

Any psychologist worth his salt would agree that JohnnyZ is in love with Romney.

Anti-Mormon bigotry right here on FR prevented many people from hearing him. How many bible thumpers said they’d never vote for him b/c he was Mormon? I saw alot.

It’s a sad day now that we’re stuck with the psychopath McPain and it’s going to be a long 4 years with Hillary or Obama in office.

Romney Leaves Race On a High Note [Mark Hemingway]

Just finished watching Romney’s terrific speech, and I bet a lot of people are wishing that he displayed more of that inspirational quality and verve in the campaign.

Again, it would behoove McCain to reach out to Romney starting now if he hasn’t already. Despite their personal differences and sharp elbows in the campaign, Romney has now made it clear that it’s necessary to support McCain. He’s too big an asset for McCain to ignore and not utilize.

And with that speech, the good will he’s engendered by his classy exit, and the support he enjoys from the conservative base, I think it’s safe to say he may have finally laid many of the questions about his conservative credentials to rest. Too bad the timing is so unfortunate.

We watched a replay of Reagan’s speech in 1976...which Mitt will give again at the convention.

Keep the faith.

I felt the same way. I'd heard and seen him before, but not like this. Too bad he hadn't been speaking like this all along. Though, it could be the media's fault, too. They never cast him in a good light.

He was discounted and ignored for several shortsighted reasons.
  1. The Mormon thing was bigger than it should have been-here on FR there were numerous ugly comments made, harkening back to Catholic bashing during JFK's run.
  2. His moderate record as governor. People can change and evolve. Recall Reagan's moderate policies as Governor of a liberal state, he then evolved into the conservative champion. Romney has been proclaiming conservative values since 1994.
Bottom line, I think voting for McCain was a mistake. I predict that if he wins, we will regret it constantly. I think it will be a painful experience. I liken it to driving while drunk and killing someone, then dreading your decision after sobering up, as the full impact of your bad choice sets in.

I read this instead of listening to the noise machine here on FR. I was impressed as hell.

I recall 1976, when people on the convention floor, having just heard Reagan speak but having already voted for Ford, said, “I think we nominated the wrong man.”

Listen, I can appreciate your religious tone of your post.

But we MUST BATTLE the enemy, and that is McCain.

If he had made that speech two months ago it would have been a great unifier to our party

Unfortunately I have to disagree. At that point Hunter and Thompson were still in the race, and even though everyone knew neither had a realistic chance of winning, too many people would have refused to support him "on principle".

We conservatives need to learn that politics is a game played by coalitions, and that game, by definition, requires compromise.

For example, I was concerned about Romney supporting the second amendment, but my gut feeling on this is that gun rights has the momentum right now (more and more states are passing concealed carry as well as home defense statutes). This momentum makes me reasonably sure that Romney would not push any gun grabbing measures, and even if he did they probably wouldn't pass, so I could drop that concern from my evaluation of Romney. His stance on abortion is a non-issue because the president has very little influence on that issue.

No candidate is perfect, so we always settle for good enough or lesser of two evils. The alternative is to become irrelevant. If you think staying home and allowing a democrat to be elected will ultimately lead to a conservative being elected down the road you are deluding yourself.
