You may have noticed a number of stories recently about undersea cables getting cut around the world. Apparently the total is now up to 5, but the scariest part of this is that Iran is now offline. You can also read Schneier's comments on this coincidence.

Oh come on. Everyone knows it’s Israel trying to isolate the bad guys right before the big strike!
Seriously, there are some good comments on that Schneier link. I wouldn’t jump to any conclusions at thise point.

I wish I could figure out what the heck is going on. Yeah, we'e all trying to guess whether this is friendly, unfriendly or just some bizarre "epidemic."

What do you mean, no way ? The Iranian gov’t controls/owns the Iranian telco companies. Just like the Chinese, I’m sure they filter whatever they want to and deny connectivity whenever they want.
The only thing they might not totally control is satellite, and that would not be available to the average Iranian in any case.

It seems more likely it’s either the first or second- 5 cuts simply can’t be a coincidence. SO bizarre, isn’t it?

As noted above, this smells like an “isolate the people” tactic. If I had to guess, I’d say that Iran’s going Taleban soon, and this is one step toward it.

You might be right. Unless they want to entirely cut folks off from the outside world, without seeming to do so.

Only one Gulf country seems to be unaffected for the most part.Curiouser and curiouser...
BTW did anyone notice that FR's tubes seem to be clogged this morning. It's moving very slowly...

Yes, FR is very slow today. It may just be an FR problem, though, because I haven’t noticed any slowdown with other sites.
The five cables being cut is definitely weird, in any case.

Probability says sabotage almost surely. Yet why and who? Iran doing it to itself prior to an internal crackdown is my guess.
