(CNN) Mitt Romney is backing away from a statement that seemed to denigrate former GOP presidential candidate Robert Dole, who wrote a letter to Rush Limbaugh yesterday defending the former Massachusetts governors main Republican rival, John McCain.
In a FOX interview Tuesday morning, Romney had said the former Kansas senator was probably the last person I would have wanted to have write a letter for me.

Even those who claim to be social conservatives have amnesia or blameitus when it comes to Mitt being the only governor in the United States to sign into law the corruption of the sacred marriage ceremony to include men marrying men, or women marrying women. Oh, he had to, ‘cause the state supreme court ordered it, but he’ll, umm, work to change the moral degradation of this country, really...’
There’s nothing appealing about the Huckster. I mean, seriously, you have to walk a long, long, long way to get to a vantage point where John McCain looks good, especially since he’d probably use a win as vindication on his amnesty viewpoints.
It’s almost like a lot of people around here secretly hope that Hillary wins the nomination, and eventually the White House. I don’t want to imagine what would come from a Democrat dominated legislature with an enabler Republican in office like Romney or the Huckster; least with McCain there’s no bipartisan bat to beat him up with, well, least not one he’ll be swinging himself.
Honestly, I dislike every single person running. Heck, Ron Paul, the wackaloon himself, is almost appealing at this point. Out of the poor choices remaining all that’s pretty much left is John McCain, as much as it pains me to say that. Had a year and two months dreaming of Fred Thompson as president, woke up to a nightmare.
Mitt wins self-described conservative Republicans by a healthy margin.
The problem is, as you say, that not all Republicans are conservatives. The Republicans who are moderates and liberals tend to support John McCain by large margins. Add to this the independents and cross-over democrats who are permitted (for reasons I cannot fathom) to vote in Republican primaries, and McCain comes out the winner.
I don’t like it, but there it is.
My reference to Michigan, BTW, was to the Democrat primary, where only Hillary Clinton was on the ballot. Of course, the Republican held a regular primary, with multiple candidates and everything, in Michigan.
Amen brother you took the words right out of my mouth... Pureists do not exist in politics because they are eaten alive on both the left and the right...
No candidate is a Puresist but Romney by far is the least Conservative and most Pandering and is a sure loss in NOV..
My Personal opinion endorsing Romney is a win/win for Rush and Sean but a Lose/Lose for Conservatives and Republicans..
When Dole was running for president, he donated to the local party for the yearly fundraiser the paperweight/pen set that has the logo “Senate Majority Leader”. I bought it. Had he won, it would have been worth something but since he didn’t, it’s just a nice memento.
Romney is just a nasty RINO...how classless
His MittNittWitts talk the same in these threeads...
Rome, you are overrating the power of Rush Limbaugh over voters.
PURE NONSENSE! I don't believe that for a second. LBJ`s "Daisy Ad" was shown once on national television. Johnson's campaign was hammered for airing it. Goldwater had no personality whatsoever and his hard right rhetoric turned most voters off.
Yes, a MYTH.
You know, I have never like McCain much because of his cockamamie legislation and his Catholic Voter alert nonsense in the primary against W back in 2000, but I do respect him.
He knows how to fight as dirty as the democrats and will take that fight to our enemies in Congress and in the middle east.
A short time later, Romney also referred to Dole as an American hero. He added that he would love to have the former senators support for his own bid.

Flip Flopping away
Typical RINO Romney behavior
Oh well, I invested long and have my affairs in order for a long dry spell, so I can pick it back up in 2012. Maybe the kiddies will be through with their pet issues and vanity candidates and things will suck enough that they will be crying for a real Conservative to save their butts...
I will refrain from saying I told you so to them.
For about 10 minutes.
Huckbee is another dishonest open border, nanny state, and big taxes candidate who is so uniformed about issues as to be beyond consideration.
Romney was not my first or second choice. But those I favored have dropped out. He is the best of those remaining. At least would not go to the left wing extremes of McCain/Hillary/Obama.
I think it was more stupid of Dole. Poor guy thought he was an untouchable.
Some voters, some pundits and even some FReepers have allowed their emotional hatred for John McCain to lend credence to the Romney campaign. Overlooking a lifetime of Willard’s support for liberal causes and liberal issues.
All in all, a said day for conservatism.
I don't genuflect before politial icons, but Rinos never hesitated to tug their forelock at Bob Dole.
You're shrillness is showing.
Exactly.
Romney's record in government is a record of liberal policies, liberal statements, and liberal signatures.
I disagree.
LBJ showed the ad once, the media showed it over and over and over again stating how horrible it was.
Then we can go into the lies about Viet Nam that LBJ spouted against BG...you know its history - we just disagree on this point.
Not at all. I reached my conclusions about Romney based on his record and his rhetoric. His endless political epiphanies are more political expediency in my book. Romney will say and do most anything to get elected.
At one time or another Romney has betrayed the Constitution, Reaganism, the Contract With America and the Republican Party.
*** Back in 2005, Romney was calling the McCain-Kennedy-Bush comprehensive immigration reform package, which btw included amnesty, "reasonable proposals". Since that time Romney has unbelievably morphed into a Tancredo clone. Mitt the Phony!
*** In 1994 Romney was trying to run to the left of Fat Ted Kennedy on the abortion issue. He says he had an epiphany a few years back and now calls himself pro-life. Yet he was still upholding a womans right to choose in 2005. Mitt the Fraud!
*** Romney has stated, he would sign a federal assault weapons ban if it came to his desk. Recently, Romney said he was a lifetime hunter and supported the NRA his entire life. We now know that is BS. He joined the NRA in 2006. Mitt the Liar!
*** Romney has a record of advancing homosexual rights, in a leading liberal state that has elected Ted Kennedy and John Kerry, election cycle after election cycle, decade after decade. Mitt Panderer!
*** Also, Romney has a long history of supporting campaign finance reform and restrictions even more stringent than McCain-Feingold legislation. He supported banning Political Action Committees (PACS) and called for a ten percent tax on campaign contributions, along with capping campaign spending on congressional elections. Mitt the Hypocrite!
Romney's only real accomplishment as Governor of Massachusetts was to propose the first ever statewide health care program in America. Romney wants the federal government to take over 1/7th of the US economy by shoving a version of his RomneyCare down the throats of the American people. Mandates, subsidies and regulations aren't what the US health care system needs. That is the first step on the road to socialized medicine. Mitt the Social-Liberal!
Romney has no principles or convictions. He is a man with an extremely flawed character, which exposes his lack of integrity. A vote for Romney is a vote against conservatism.
The media did replay it, but not by todays standards. Goldwater was a piss-poor candidate. If anything Goldwater recieved some sympathy votes for its one airing. LBJ won in a huge landslide and one commercial advertisment didn’t make it so.
only Democrats play the BS vet immunity totem.
IF Dole did not want to play he should not have entered the game.
Remember Sheehan?
remember whatshisname who drop the grenade?
remember the kerry?
