Two days before Super Tuesdays multistate nominating contests, Mitt Romney tried to draw some of the momentum away from Senator John McCains campaign on Sunday, hammering home his often-repeated claim that the Arizona Republican is unacceptable to conservatives.
This is a battle in some respects for the heart and soul of the Republican Party, Mr. Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, said on ABC News. With weekend polls showing Mr. McCain holding a commanding lead across the states holding contests on Tuesday, Mr. Romney was fighting to retake the advantage. Mr. McCain told Fox News on Sunday that he was guardedly optimistic.
As candidates campaigned furiously in the hours before the Super Bowl, the Democrats, Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois, were close to a draw, the polls showed, with Mrs. Clinton narrowly ahead.
Mr. Romney continued Sunday to make his plea to conservatives ever clearer, as he repeatedly invoked the name of President Ronald Reagan, a conservative icon. He also cited right-wing radio talk-show hosts like Rush Limbaugh who have accused Mr. McCain of being a phony conservative.
Conservatives across the country are going, Whoa, we have to get behind Mitt Romney, Mr. Romney said on CNN. He asserted that Mr. McCain favored amnesty for undocumented aliens and that his climate-change policies would cost 300,000 American jobs.

Well, it is true!
Go Mitt!!!
It’s a “no brainer.” If McCain gets the nod it’s the end of the Republican Party as we know it.
For a swift kick in the pants?
Macro?
What tied does JM have? Difference of two delegates hardly a tide.
John McCain
Pledged: 95
Superdelegates: 2
Total: 97
Mitt Romney
Pledged: 85
Superdelegates: 7
Total: 92
Like California, where the polls show Romney in the lead or tied. Of course, the NYT has already called the election.
Romney Gaining on McCain.
There. Fixed it.
I’m glad to see Mitt fighting for it, rather than just lying down and listening to the MSM.
The latest polls show Romney either leading or tied in California, Georgia, and Missouri. I know the MSM/McCain axis is working overtime with their propaganda but something tells me this is going to be a lot closer than they think.
While the deadline for this story may have been in before the final results, it is standard NYT to ignore the ass-whooping Romney gave McCain in Maine that was apparent from the beginning of the returns.
If you notice all the shills in the media for McCain like Novak, Barnes, the NY Times etc. all desperately want amnesty for illegal aliens. They’ve been promoting that for several years. A McCain victory would be a slap in the face to conservatives who beat them last June but I got news for the traitors and other assorted airheads, even if their Manchurian Candidate wins, which is by far not in the bag their beloved amnesty dreams won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
Versus Hillary/Romney 2008?
Are you a McCain supporter?
Nope. Are you a DU plant?
I'm not at all in favor of lefties like Sen. McCain or Gov. Huckabee, but you might want to check your numbers again for Missouri. Gov. Romney is in third place there. :-(
Backwards. I'm NOT for Romney.
