ON almost every step of his march towards the Republican nomination, John McCain has relied on the support of his glamorous second wife Cindy. Yet she has not always been a political asset. A Republican victory in November would bring to the White House a formidable but flawed first lady.
McCain’s marriage has long attracted attention both for the 18-year age gap between husband and wife and for their adopted Asian daughter, who became the focus of one of the most vicious dirty tricks of the 2000 presidential campaign.
The couple have also overcome daunting health problems that included McCain’s bouts with skin cancer, a stroke suffered by Cindy in 2004, and her admission a decade earlier that she had become so addicted to painkillers that she was stealing them from a medical charity she ran.
Yet somehow the McCains have emerged as a potent and durable political partnership. Cindy McCain was at her husband’s side last week as he celebrated the Florida primary victory that has put him at the front of the Republican field.
A former Arizona rodeo beauty queen and daughter of a millionaire Phoenix businessman, Cindy McCain was 25 when she met her future husband at a cocktail party in Hawaii. John McCain was a 43-year-old naval liaison officer travelling with a congressional delegation, his sights already set on a political career.
He was also still married to his first wife Carol, although the couple had recently separated. Carol later attributed the breakdown of the marriage to “John turning 40 and wanting to be 25 again”. McCain fell like a brick for Cindy, who was the heir to a brewery distribution business worth millions.

Cindy McCain has suffered a stroke, and just a few weeks ago had a knee replacement on Nov 14. Cindy and John need to be getting their afternoon naps.

The wife of Arizona Senator John McCain is recovering at the Mayo Clinic after undergoing a revision to knee replacement surgery. Doctors at Mayo Hospital say Cindy McCain required the surgery because a ligament did not respond to non-surgical treatment. Senator McCain says his wife should be in the hospital for three days and that her recovery should take a few months.
Real bottom drawer stuff.
Cindy McCain wasn’t stealing the drugs, she was stealing the scripts, and forging the presciptions, signing the names of the doctors who worked for the charity that she worked for.
I have no use for John McCain, but this is just crap, and Brit crap at that.

I’ve heard this cannard about South Carolina in 2000 and McCain being ‘smeared’ but does anybody have any actual PROOF that it happened? I’ve seen numerous and histrionic media accounts of how evil Bush was and all his dirty tricks but since McCain now employs all the old Bush people aren’t any of them apologizing for ‘smearing’ him?
I have heard recordings of the pushpoll calls from the McCain campaigns against Romney. I’ve heard the Clinton calls against Obama. I’ve heard the truck-dragging commercials the NAACP ran against Bush in 2000. But I’ve never heard or seen a transcript or even an actual first hand account of this happening to McCain.
Anybody else seen or heard it from the actual source?

A further angle on Cindy’s drug stealing from the non-profit she was working for was that the DEA was after her, and clinton agreed to call them off in return for McCain’s support.
No, this is not nice, but if McCain gets the nomination we’ll be seeing a lot more of it.
The media constantly attacked Nancy Reagan, they attacked Betty Ford, and they will attack any Republican First Lady with vulnerabilities. The only thing surprising about this article is that anyone is doing it before the nomination.
