A new poll of Ohio voters seems to mirror nationwide sentiment on the economy and the election: Worries are mounting, as is support for Sens. Hillary Clinton and John McCain in their respective party races.
Columbus-based research firm Opinion Consultants in a survey of 800 Ohio voters indicated 57 percent of Ohioans are pessimistic about the outlook for the state, citing a dismal economic climate, limited accessibility to quality education and diminishing confidence in state politicians.
Nearly 80 percent of surveyed voters, the firm said, indicated they were aware the government was working on proposals to boost the economy. The top concern of 62 percent of surveyed voters was the economy, as more than one-third described their family's financial status as worse than a year ago.
In the ongoing presidential primary races, 44 percent of surveyed Ohio Democrats preferred Clinton, trailed by Sen. Barack Obama with 28 percent support and former Sen. John Edwards, who has since dropped out of the race, with 17 percent. Surveyed Republicans threw support behind McCain, who took 39 percent of the vote. McCain, now considered the front-runner for the Republican nomination, was trailed by former Gov. Mitt Romney with 23 percent, former Gov. Mike Huckabee with 18 percent and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani with 12 percent. Giuliani also dropped out of the race after the poll was conducted.
In another recent Opinion Consultants poll, which surveyed area business executives, McCain led the predominantly Republican group of surveyed leaders while Obama garnered the most support from Democrats.
fyi...
McCain could take it all on the first ballot, with only 35% primary support, due to winner take all rules.
So if peeps are worried about the economy why would they elect McCain? He is clueless on the economy, by his own admission.
Good point... but the more the people become “worried”, the more they will turn to an establishment figure they know.
Huckabee needs to drop out.
This Ohio voter isn’t for McCain.
Besides being clueless Clinton and McCain helped put us in the positions we are in. Their aye and nay votes are not done in a vacuum, they have real consequences.
sheana <——— constantly shaking my head
I cant understand why Steve Forbes would endorse McCain.
Shaking my head too...
Yup. That’s it. McCain is a well-known brand name and it takes a lot for the luster to wear off the product, even though, in this case, it has long ceased functioning.
Here I come to save the day.....!
Mighty Mitt, is on the way....!
So much for change, we’re going to end up with the same old crappy choices if mccain and hillary become the nominees.
I don’t believe those polls that show mccain is the only one who can beat the dem candidate. Polls this early are meaningless, didn’t we learn from the Giuliani polls.
From you mouth to God’s ears.
Go Romney go!!! and may God continually bless you.
Gosh I miss Fred
Not this Ohioan.
Here in OH, things are bad. People like McCain here. Go figure.
LLS
I’m from Ohio. I know just what its like.
My guess....
McCain has no policies, no programs, no core that is really his own. He was steered by Kennedy on McCain/Kennedy. Ditto by Feingold on Campaign Finance.
McCain would be very suseptible to advisors - maybe Forbes wants to be his advisor on economics and tax policy.
In many ways McCain is more dangerous than Obama. Obama is young, smart and a quick study. Notice how he got Volker on his team to help with economics.
McCain is too old and too slow to learn. He will be run by his advisors. How dangerous he will be depends on who he listens to last!
