New bill would make it illegal for restaurants to serve the obese

FEBRUARY 1--Mississippi legislators this week introduced a bill that would make it illegal for state-licensed restaurants to serve obese patrons. Bill No. 282, a copy of which you'll find below, is the brainchild of three members of the state's House of Representatives, Republicans W. T. Mayhall, Jr. and John Read, and Democrat Bobby Shows. The bill, which is likely dead on arrival, proposes that the state's Department of Health establish weight criteria after consultation with Mississippi's Council on Obesity. It does not detail what penalties an eatery would face if its grub was served to someone with an excessive body mass index.

It was difficult to post this article. It just seems too crazy to be true. I know people have been predicting this sort of thing since they started going after smoking, but the speed at which this stuff is coming to fruition is stunning. I keep clicking back to the source and rereading the bill to see where the joke is.

Oh for goodness sake, the bill will never pass in this state. We can still smoke in restaurants here, in the smoking area. As far as the dry counties, that’s at the local government level, it’s mostly a religious issue, and that’s almost as “small government” as you can get. If a majority of Baptists in a majority Baptist county want to ban booze in their own county, let ‘em. Everybody just goes a few miles to the next county.

This sounds like something that could only come from the mind of Mike Huckabee, he is just smart enough not to just hang it all out there at once like that.

So basically, they are proposing that patrons step on scales and then figure their BMI before they can enter an eating establishment? Either that or the government figured BMI would have to be on their ID (driver’s license).... Either option is insane.

There are always a few moonbatty pols, in both parties, who get on the "health tyranny" bandwagon. They are less likely to gain traction in Mississippi than anywhere--we have some of the most lenient smoking laws in the nation.

There are still “juke joints” operating in the country areas way back in the woods in Mississippi-I have relatives who can hear the music from them on Saturday nights. The owners pay off a few police and carry on. The patrons hoot ‘n holler all Saturday night, then cross the road Sunday morning to attend the little old church across the road.
