New bill would make it illegal for restaurants to serve the obese
FEBRUARY 1--Mississippi legislators this week introduced a bill that would make it illegal for state-licensed restaurants to serve obese patrons. Bill No. 282, a copy of which you'll find below, is the brainchild of three members of the state's House of Representatives, Republicans W. T. Mayhall, Jr. and John Read, and Democrat Bobby Shows. The bill, which is likely dead on arrival, proposes that the state's Department of Health establish weight criteria after consultation with Mississippi's Council on Obesity. It does not detail what penalties an eatery would face if its grub was served to someone with an excessive body mass index.

It was difficult to post this article. It just seems too crazy to be true. I know people have been predicting this sort of thing since they started going after smoking, but the speed at which this stuff is coming to fruition is stunning. I keep clicking back to the source and rereading the bill to see where the joke is.

Interestingly, I have stated recently that we are indeed entering a new form of “Dark Age” characterized by lack of rational thinking skills.

And this is why I will no longer give the GOP a blank check in the voting booth. It is appalling that these types of bills are often pushed by republicans. No more political relativism.

Oh for goodness sake, the bill will never pass in this state. We can still smoke in restaurants here, in the smoking area. As far as the dry counties, that’s at the local government level, it’s mostly a religious issue, and that’s almost as “small government” as you can get. If a majority of Baptists in a majority Baptist county want to ban booze in their own county, let ‘em. Everybody just goes a few miles to the next county.

not republicans, just rinosThe RINOs appear to be in majority, at least in terms of power and influence within the party. If that's the case, they're not RINOs anymore. We are.

Was this introduced as a form of sarcasm, or was the sponsor serious???
See post #41. I'm waiting to find out this is a big joke. I was hesitant to push the post button because this is so ridiculous. I hope it is simply sarcasm and I look silly for perpetuating it.

Did it ever occur to these Rino's that you can order food from the internet for delivery?
Walking to a restaurant is often the only exercise some of these people get

Great point!
The Republican party left freedom loving economic conservatives behind long ago.

I'd certainly think it wouldn't. What disturbs me is the fact that it is being proposed by elected officials at all.

This sounds like something that could only come from the mind of Mike Huckabee, he is just smart enough not to just hang it all out there at once like that.
So basically, they are proposing that patrons step on scales and then figure their BMI before they can enter an eating establishment? Either that or the government figured BMI would have to be on their ID (driver’s license).... Either option is insane.

There are always a few moonbatty pols, in both parties, who get on the "health tyranny" bandwagon. They are less likely to gain traction in Mississippi than anywhere--we have some of the most lenient smoking laws in the nation.

Mississippi attempts at fat laws will be about as effect as its blue laws.

But I would think these "heavy" eaters would be among a restaurant's best customers. They are the best customers of the "all you can eat" buffets.

There are still “juke joints” operating in the country areas way back in the woods in Mississippi-I have relatives who can hear the music from them on Saturday nights. The owners pay off a few police and carry on. The patrons hoot ‘n holler all Saturday night, then cross the road Sunday morning to attend the little old church across the road.
