He doesn't have to call himself anything, Chris Matthews, Keith Olberman and the entire press corps does it for him. But didn't you see his Christmas spot? Haven't you seen the POW footage of him in the bed a thousand times?

Of course, he digs his toe in the rug, looks down and blushes when he says, "I'm no war hero...", but what he means is: "Hey, remember me? The war hero?"

Give me a break. That mantle has allowed him to vote for every pro-Vietnam, anti-US bill that John Kerry, Ted Kennedy and Carl Levin put in front of him.

But, when the Democrats get around to showing the footage of him denouncing the war and his country for his captors...let's see if Tim Russert calls him a war hero. They'll all be shocked SHOCKED, I tell you.

The guy was in the Hanoi Hilton for Pete’s sake. which doesn’t give a guy a pass on being scrutinized. But I challenge anyone that has not been incarcerated and tortured like McCain, to question his loyalty due to the fact he decided to stay a few more years even though he had the opportunity just because his dad was an admiral running the show. I would say he was ‘patriotic’ as much as a POW can be in those circumstances, as was others, whose arms and legs were tied behind their backs for significant periods of time. Many of these negative comments are utterly pathetic but, hey, free speech, baby.

What is pathetic is McCain set himself up as speech 'god' as incumbent protection racket. Sure he suffered but that sure does not entitle him to the office of President.

He was tortured horribly and refused an offer of early release. That's something that deserves a tad bit of respect, I think.

Also, I'm unaware of ANY of those who were captives with him expressing any criticism of his behavior.

If you want to run him down, run him down on the issues. I'm not voting for him in the primary, but I'll call him a hero.

JMHO but this will backfire. A better course of action is to look at Randy “Duke” Cunningham, a bona fide Vietnam war hero who went bad. We thank them for their service and for putting their lives on the line. But we understand that we all have feet of clay and past heroism is not a blank check written against an account with unlimited funds.

Because the traitors were released early ; this is why he was offered early release.

Oh for Pete's sake. His father was in charge of the Pacific fleet. They offered him a early release because it would have been a great propaganda boon for them if he took it and would have demoralized his fellow prisoners.

It is dismaying to watch conservatives give the White House to the Left because conservatives would rather keep McCain out of the race than win the election.

“What is the rules of conduct, General, seeing that you are an expert in SEER training and POW affairs?”

The rules of conduct for POWs were exceeding simple in those days: provide only your name, rank and serial number.

Not sure if they’ve been modified since.

I know the history. I just have a problem believing that if the Vietnamese wanted to release him for some PR or other gain, they would not have just done it. They were in charge at that time. It may be true, but it just seems odd.

That would be like when Gen Pershing executed 49 mooslem terrorist in the Philippians, them buried them with pig guts, and told the 50th to tell his friends he would do the same to them unless they cut the shit, the 50th saying “No, no, kill me instead.” Regardless of what Mr. 50 says, it would not achieve Gen. Pershing desired results.

FLAT OUT WRONG!!!!! McCain crawled into bed with Hillary Clinton, did her legislative work for her stood up tooook the credit for slapping conservatives time and time again across the cheeks. McCain is reaping exactly what he has sown, he loves the likes of Hillary more than he sought respect.... let him sleep in the bed he legislated....

It seems like McCain has always been a very dishonorable human being with a long history of betrayal. The fact that he ended up as a POW just illustrates that bad things happen not only to good people, but also, not so good people. A terrible thing, for sure. But it doesn’t mean he is anything but what he is; a dishonorable, ego maniacal, person.

Facts are Facts...

Myths are Myths...

No one has been successful in proving ANYTHING the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth said about Kerry’s lies was false..

Kerry has the ability to clear his name, and destroy the SBVFT’s integrity -— by simply signing his SF-180 and allow the public to see his ENTIRE and UNVARNISHED Military Records...

Kerry STILL has not signed the form..
That should be the END OF STORY for anyone with brains.....

I have alway been suspicious of McCain’s “closeness” to Kerry...
Whatever they may “share” — is certainly underhanded.

I agree with you except for the last part about unable to be heroic while in captivity. There have been many heroic actions by those in captivity. This ,by his own statements, doesn’t seem apply to McCain, however.

During WWI and II and Korea, American prisoners were not used/tortured for propaganda purposes but for current information. Even without the Geneva Conventions of ‘49, combatants on both sides knew that a POW’s information-bank lost value with time.

Not so during Vietnam. The North Vietnamese and their allies tortured for propaganda and, in a sense, dhimmitude. The need for propaganda, as outlined by both Ho & Giap, produced torture on an almost regular basis. To avoid torture, all a POW had to do was cooperate; and as many POWs will tell you—just about every one of them broke, but only after they’d taken much more (including death) than any previous American POW.

Unlike the Japan death march, NV-held POWs had a choice: they could cooperate and live if not well at least free of torture; or they could resist attempts at being used by NV and take punishment.

That, along with the facts that 1) they took this kind of punishment for over twice the length of time as any other previous American combatant and 2)they attempted to make those who collaborated accountable for their actions (even tho their government refused to acknowledge those charges) makes them heroes.

And you’re quite right—before Vietnam POWs (if they were lucky) were merely survivors; during Vietnam they were still very much part of the war that would “be won on the streets of America” with antiwar and anti-soldier propaganda. They CHOSE heroism.
