Mitt Romney gave 18 million dollars of his own money to his campaign in the last three months of 2007. In total, he has poured 35 million dollars of his personal fortune into his campaign.
The Romney camp also reported raising 9 million dollars in donations in the fourth quarter equaling 53.5 million dollars for the entire year. The campaign spent 33.8 million during the last 3 months of the year equaling 87.6 million dollars spent in 2007. The camp reports having 2.4 million dollars cash on hand at the end of the year. The campaign did not release any numbers for January meaning that Romney may have donated even more than 35 million dollars to his campaign.
The camp launched an aggressive ad blitz today signaling that former Massachusetts governor may have used more of his vast wealth, which is estimated at upwards of 250 million dollars.
Campaigns were required to file their end of the year finance reports today with the Federal Election Commission.

I just hope he gets the message out in time and that it makes a difference to enough people. I can't see a sick, cranky old man winning in November, nor do I want McCain as President.
Huck does want the veep spot, but he also truly wants McCain to be at the top. Huck and McCain are both truly trying to finish off Romney, and they probably will succeed at doing just that soon.

No seriously, if Fred Thompson still wants to do his civic duty and step up to the plate, nows the time to join the Romney ticket as VP.
Check out the Clintons and Obama. They have far more campaign money than Romney. They are bought and paid for and so is McCain. Far better a candidate uses his own money than being indebted to wealthy contributors. It is amazing how the Clintons and Gore didn't have a lot of money before entering politics and now they are multi-millionaires many times over.

I don’t know where you get the $70 million from, this seems to grow every day like some fisherman’s story. It’s not a power grab, as there is nothing illegal or unethical about it. Romney is only playing by McCain’s campaign finance rules. It is however a massive media blitz...and that’s what we call a campaign. That it has been heavily subsidized by his own pocket is interesting, nothing more. It’s his money, he can do whatever he wants with it...or does the GOP no longer believe in that either?
It’s his money, he earned it.
It’s his dream, he should follow it.
I thought the campaign donation limit was $2500 per person. This rule should apply to himself as well as others. You guys bust on McCain nonstop for McCain-Feingold then you support a millionaire liberal-turned-conservative who is trying to buy the presidency? LOL! I have wondered many times if his money is giving Romney the illusion of more support than he actually has.
If other people have to raise their cash through donations from supporters, but Romney gets a lot of his from his own pocket, it would seem that that is possibly the case.
The others are also trying to “buy” the Presidency, only they have to take money from special interests to do so. It’s all in how you look at it—it costs money, no matter whose money it is. There’s something to be said for someone who can use his own rather than be beholden to special interests.

No, that was the McCain-Feingold law which made it very difficult for anyone who isn't personally very wealthy to finance a presidential run against Washington insiders.
All Romney has to do is pull an Edwards, Suspend his canidacy and apply for matching Federal Funds!
