Seven good reasons to support Mike Huckabee [be sure to read reason number seven]
The dark and jumbled recesses of my aging feeble brain | January 31, 2008 | Jim Robinson

Posted on 01/31/2008 2:09:25 PM PST by Jim Robinson

My friends, I have to admit that I've been in a bit of a quandary since the Real Conservatives ® Thompson and Hunter dropped out of the race leaving us to to place our bets on one the four headless horsemen. But after having a day or three to sort it all out, I'm beginning to see a ray of hope.

Number one, my worst fear that the pro-abortion, pro-gay, anti-gun social liberal Rudy Giuliani might be nominated, and thereby bring an abrupt and unholy end to the pro-life conservative movement within the GOP has been allayed. His evil culture of death platform has been soundly rejected by the Republican voters. Thank God! If nothing else is gained, that alone is a huge victory for us!

And that leaves us with the unwelcome slippery task of having to determine and select the least evil of the three remaining RINOs. But wait! When choosing between evils, why not choose the good?

McCain is insane and there are many good reasons not to choose him, but I'll list just five: McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Lieberman, the Keating 5, and the Gang of 14. No thanks. McCain is out!

Romney ran on a pro-abortion platform, is pro gay rights, is prone to BIG government solutions, promises anything to anyone for a vote, and flip-flops on important issues. Can't trust him.

Now Governor Huckabee. Could this be the good vs evil? He's a Baptist minister. A genuine 100% pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-gun, Southron Christian social conservative!

And that would be my reason no. 1 to support Huckabee. He has the trust and backing of the Christian evangelicals and the support of the Bible Belt. You cannot win the presidency without the South, and I believe the pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-gun, pro-America Mike Huckabee is the most likely of the three GOP hopefuls to carry the South. And that's a pretty darn good reason!

My number two reason is that he is NOT McCain (and that's a pretty darn good reason too).

Number three (and this will be a tough one for a lot of my FReeper Friends) is that he is NOT Romney.

Numbers four and five are he's NOT Hillary and NOT Obama. Oohrah!

Number six, he plays a mean bass and he's a traditional favorite at Free Republic's infamous quadrennial Inaugural Balls in Washington, DC. Perhaps we could persuade President Huckabee to drop by our ball and perform his rocking rendition of "Sweet Home Alabama!" Now, wouldn't that be a hoot!

Number seven, if we can keep Huckabee in the race all the way through, thus preventing McCain or Romney from gaining enough delegates to win the nomination, then maybe, just maybe a deadlocked convention might seek out another candidate. One who can re-unite the Reagan Coalition, save the GOP, and put us back on the conservative track. Of course, my personal favorite to be that man would be FRed Thompson.

Woo hoo!!

Let it ring out through grassroots America and on to the convention! Support life! Support the GOP! Support Huckabee! And re-draft FRed Thompson!!

Never give in, never give up, and never lose hope.

Long live the Reagan Revolution!

More on Huckabee and taxes:

Sales Tax Hike (1996): Voters approved 1/8 cent sales tax increase to fund conservation and park services to preserve Arkansas natural and cultural heritage.

Gas and Diesel Fuel Tax Hike (1999): Arkansans supported a 3 cent per gallon fuel tax increase that allowed Arkansas to completely rehabilitate the interstate highway system, changing the interstate system from one of the worst in the country to the best according to Truckers Magazine.

Cigarette Tax Hike (2001): The cigarette tax increase of 25 cents per pack was used to fund state healthcare obligations. Arkansas tobacco taxes are still low, 33rd in the U. S.

Nursing Home Bed Tax (2001): The bed-tax on private nursing home patients was instituted to generate revenue for a nearly 3-to-1 match in federal Medicaid funds. Without this revenue low-income patients would not be able to find beds in nursing homes.

Grocery Tax: Huckabee opposed repeal (2002): This was actually a soft drink tax that Governor Huckabee opposed abolishing because it would drain $168 million from the state’s Medicaid budget.

Income Surcharge Tax (2003) – In 2003 there was a temporary increase in the income tax to offset the economic recession our country was facing in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. They were needed for one year, and unlike most “temporary taxes,” Governor Huckabee made sure that the legislature kept its promise to the people that it was eliminated after two years.

Tobacco Tax Hike (2003) – This is the tax from the video clip that the Club for Growth uses in their attack ad. In 2003 the state’s chief financial officer projected a $62.3 million revenue shortfall that would result in cuts in state services, possible layoffs, tax increases or the possible repeal of late 1990s tax cuts. The Legislature was presented a series of options and chose to increase the tax on tobacco.

Taxes on Internet Access – Governor Huckabee has always been staunchly opposed to any tax on Internet access.

Beer Tax: Huckabee opposed letting the tax expire (2006) – The tax was used to fund programs for abused and neglected children. Without the tax there would be no funds for those programs.

It’s McCain. It’s over. We are doomed.

Obama, Hillary or McCain......take your pick...each comes with it’s own brand of trouble. Take your pick.....rancor, evil or insanity.

FR is soon to become the conservative underground.

That NAU or AU is precisely why I have become so reluctant to vote for Republicans In Name Only any longer.

When those come down the pike, our nation is history.

Give me a conservative that understands this basic truth, or count me off the reservation.

Don’t give me any of those ‘I changed every one of my lifetime principles in the last decade so you could support me’ guys.

As for John, folks must be joshing if they think that’s going to fly.

Voting for Huckabee means McCain would get the nomination.”

Nope, exactly the opposite. Huckabee pulls 9% more votes from McCain than Romney.”

In this crazy election, it’s hard to tell which candidate we’re talking about covering up their record. ;(

this is a very civilized conversation.

nothing like other sites.

vulgarities and rudeness.

we are just talking in an inteligent civilized manner.

This is why the MSM can’s stand FR.

Inteligent viewers don’t work for the MSM ratings.

As an Arkansan, I'd like to take this opportunity to set the record straight on a few things:

#1. Mike Huckabee is a good Conservative.

#2. He is not in favor of open borders or illegal immigration.

#3. He is not in favor of big government.

#4. He is not a tax-and-spender.

#5. He did not pardon Wayne Dumond.

#6. He has made a few mistakes during his tenure as governor of Arkansas - and he has learned his lessons. He is one of us, and he had to learn things as he went along. He certainly has performed better than most of his know-it-all critics could have.

#7. He has been the target of two well-financed propaganda campaigns designed to distort his record and mislead voters. One of those campaigns was funded by Ron Paul. The other campaign is funded by a local guy who has been in a personal feud with Huckabee for a few years. Unfortunately, many folks on this forum have swallowed that propaganda - hook, line and sinker.

#8. Huckabee's main weakness is in the area of foreign policy, and some of his statements during the campaign have proven that. But he's doing his homework, and trying to get up to speed.

I'm endorsing "Uncommitted" for President, and "The Huckster" for Vice-President. It's possible that Huckabee will do fairly well next Tuesday - he's favored to win in Arkansas and Tennessee. He could do surprisingly in Missouri, Oklahoma and Alabama.

If Huckabee is elected President, he'll likely do a few things you'll disagree with - but I think you'd find yourself agreeing more with the Huckabee Administration than the Bush Administration.

Sorry Jim but there will be no brokered convention. By following your vision, McCain and Huckabee combined will have enough for the nomination and sure as the sun rises Huckabee will throw his delegates to McCain. That doesn't guarantee a VP nod but admittedly the chances are good. My best guess would be if McCain felt he needed a different VP for whatever reason Huckabee will be guaranteed a nice comfy Cabinet position.

Bottomline: wrong strategy, worse result.

I didn’t vote for him and I never will. If he’s president, you can bet your sweet bippied I’ll be verbally kicking his rear end by the hour during his term in office.

He has all the ear marks Huck did go to SLC, UT, to a rally the night before of those Push Polls, (spoke to folks who don’t like LDS) but no clear ties to the PC.

In this race he has taken swipes at Mitt while in the same breath speaking well of McCain.

If you study Hegel and The Prince they have the same goal “The ends justify the means.”

My personal feeling is that Huck and McCain are playing footie’s under the table against Mitt!

There’s some truth in that. I think Duncan Hunter was the one doing the lest of that.

It helps that Jim started it. There have been too many mud fights here on FR lately.

Jim,

I wish you did not hate Romney so much.

I guess no candidate should ever change their minds.

I guess Huckabees flips and flops don’t count.

The longer Huck stays in, the more likely we get McCain...which means we get Hillary Obama... and you can kiss the overturning of Roe goodbye...

Btw, when the Huck was asked about whether Justice O’Connor was a mistake, he turned it into a joke. He either doesn’t give a damn about abortion or is too stupid to understand the importance of getting Supreme Court nominees right.

Fwiw, Judge Bork, Jay Sekulow, and Jim Bopp are on board with Romney. Do they have any cred at all?

Respectfully,

—Checkers

FR is already the conservative underground. Always has been. Unabashedly supporting pro-life, pro-liberty conservatism seems to be the next lost cause. Even within the GOP.

In my best CNN voice:

This is FR.

We ARE the dissent, baby.

Truth is, there is no longer a conservative in this race.

Fred may have been a not to rabid one, but even Fred bailed out.

I guess we all will, as usual.
