Seven good reasons to support Mike Huckabee [be sure to read reason number seven]
The dark and jumbled recesses of my aging feeble brain | January 31, 2008 | Jim Robinson

Posted on 01/31/2008 2:09:25 PM PST by Jim Robinson

My friends, I have to admit that I've been in a bit of a quandary since the Real Conservatives ® Thompson and Hunter dropped out of the race leaving us to to place our bets on one the four headless horsemen. But after having a day or three to sort it all out, I'm beginning to see a ray of hope.

Number one, my worst fear that the pro-abortion, pro-gay, anti-gun social liberal Rudy Giuliani might be nominated, and thereby bring an abrupt and unholy end to the pro-life conservative movement within the GOP has been allayed. His evil culture of death platform has been soundly rejected by the Republican voters. Thank God! If nothing else is gained, that alone is a huge victory for us!

And that leaves us with the unwelcome slippery task of having to determine and select the least evil of the three remaining RINOs. But wait! When choosing between evils, why not choose the good?

McCain is insane and there are many good reasons not to choose him, but I'll list just five: McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Lieberman, the Keating 5, and the Gang of 14. No thanks. McCain is out!

Romney ran on a pro-abortion platform, is pro gay rights, is prone to BIG government solutions, promises anything to anyone for a vote, and flip-flops on important issues. Can't trust him.

Now Governor Huckabee. Could this be the good vs evil? He's a Baptist minister. A genuine 100% pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-gun, Southron Christian social conservative!

And that would be my reason no. 1 to support Huckabee. He has the trust and backing of the Christian evangelicals and the support of the Bible Belt. You cannot win the presidency without the South, and I believe the pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-gun, pro-America Mike Huckabee is the most likely of the three GOP hopefuls to carry the South. And that's a pretty darn good reason!

My number two reason is that he is NOT McCain (and that's a pretty darn good reason too).

Number three (and this will be a tough one for a lot of my FReeper Friends) is that he is NOT Romney.

Numbers four and five are he's NOT Hillary and NOT Obama. Oohrah!

Number six, he plays a mean bass and he's a traditional favorite at Free Republic's infamous quadrennial Inaugural Balls in Washington, DC. Perhaps we could persuade President Huckabee to drop by our ball and perform his rocking rendition of "Sweet Home Alabama!" Now, wouldn't that be a hoot!

Number seven, if we can keep Huckabee in the race all the way through, thus preventing McCain or Romney from gaining enough delegates to win the nomination, then maybe, just maybe a deadlocked convention might seek out another candidate. One who can re-unite the Reagan Coalition, save the GOP, and put us back on the conservative track. Of course, my personal favorite to be that man would be FRed Thompson.

Woo hoo!!

Let it ring out through grassroots America and on to the convention! Support life! Support the GOP! Support Huckabee! And re-draft FRed Thompson!!

Never give in, never give up, and never lose hope.

Long live the Reagan Revolution!

The only reason I can see that Huckalilar is still in the race is in order to allow McAmnesty to win the nomination.

I hope that I am wrong and that he is a better man than that.

I would too, but to say voting for Huckabee will accomplish that is too much of a risk to take.

Alan Keyes wasn’t even on my absentee ballot - so I went with the man who stands for life and makes me laugh - Mike Huckabee.

Your source is old:

Before accepting this pledge, I emailed the following assumptions contained in the pledge to which Huckabee would have to agree. Staff responded that they were accepted. I then met with Huckabee today to ensure that we were both on the same page and to shake hands on the following agreement:

Governor Huckabee understands his pledge to mean that:

1. The 12 million illegal aliens now here will have to go home.

2. They will not get any legal status while here that allows them to remain long-term.

3. Once in their home countries, they may apply for re-admittance to the U.S. as immigrants, visitors or temporary workers through normal channels.

4. But they will not receive any special privileges on the basis of their having been in the U.S. illegally, such as being put to the front of a line.

5. There will be no new categories or programs through which they may re-enter.

6. There will not be an expansion of green cards in any existing categories that will speed up their movement to the front of the line.

I told the governor that each of those items deals with a trick that one lawmaker or another has tried to use on the American people over the last four years. I told him that I had to be able to assure the 530,000 activist on-line users of NumbersUSA that I had specifically gotten his assurance that he would reject any of those tricks.

It should be noted that most illegal aliens would not qualify to stand in any existing lines, particularly under Huckabee's overall plan which advocates for the elimination of the chain migration category for adult siblings and an end to the visa lottery.

My prepared statement at the press conference included this:
“Every candidate claims to oppose amnesty, but few define amnesty the way most Americans do. I applaud Gov. Huckabee for defining amnesty correctly, and for pledging to fully enforce laws that would take away the jobs and benefits magnets that draw illegal aliens here – and that keep them here.

“What a contrast to Sen. McCain, Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama, for example, who say they reject amnesty and then, in almost the same breath, say that most illegal aliens will have to be allowed to stay permanently. All three have repeatedly voted for amnesty. In the past week, Sen. McCain and Mayor Giuliani have clarified on national TV that they intend for most illegal aliens to be granted the very things they broke immigration laws to steal: an American job and U.S. residency.

“In a time of economic insecurity for many Americans, and rising joblessness, it is important to know which candidates would permanently fill American jobs with illegal foreign workers. I am pleased that Gov. Huckabee is saying he will not do that. He is taking a stand in favor of American workers, their families and their communities, all of whom need to be assured that once these illegal workers leave this country they will not be allowed back through special new catetories or by increasing the number of green cards in existing ones.”

About Sen. Thompson, Gov. Romney, Rep. Paul and Rep. Hunter

I was asked at the press conference whether the pledge signing would raise Huckabee's amnesty rating from "GOOD" to "EXCELLENT." I was pleased that the reporter had looked at our Presidential Grid.

The answer is that we would and we have. I told reporters that until recently, Huckabee had been rated only "fair" because some of his statements on TV had been confusing and ambiguous. We had pushed for more clarification and were happy to get it with the signing of the pledge. Believe me, these candidates' interest in getting their no-amnesty positions right are related in no small part to the incredible pressure they feel from citizens across the country. Many of you have challenged Gov. Huckabee. Several grassroots organizations, bloggers and radio hosts have hammered him when they felt that he was waffling or perhaps even seeming to try to leave loopholes for amnesty. While Gov. Huckabee and his staff have continually claimed they were misunderstood, voters have every reason to want iron-clad promises after all the tricks that Pres. Bush and other politicians have tried to pull on us. I believe today's signing is a tribute to all of you who have refused to accept any less.

That’s interesting. CNN exit polls from Florida (as reported by NY Times blog) says the opposite.

Romney won pro-lifers.
Romney won the mainstream religious. (Huckabee won the very religious less than one-fifth of the pool.)
Romney won the Protestants.
Romney tied Huckabee with Evangelicals.
Romney won the pro-George Bush voters.
Romney is the primary second choice of Giuliani voters, Thompson voters …. and McCain voters.
Romney won the immigration hard-liners.
Romney won the upper-middle class, earning between $100,000 and $200,000 annually.
Romney won the terrorism-oriented voters.
Romney won the self-identified conservatives and the self-identified very conservative.
Romney won the values-oriented voters.
Romney won the white voters.
Romney won the tax-cutting voters.

This is what I don’t get about so many cut off their nose to spite their face conservatives.

They will refuse the guy who’s reaching out to them with an olive branch, because they can’t “trust his conversion to be genuine”, and let the guy who’s been stepping all over them for 20 years win.

And then they’ll scratch their head in 2012 and beyond, wondering why nobody is reaching out to them and everyone is stepping on them.

Kind of like "President Ron Paul"...

Regardless whether he wins or not, his place in history is assured. He'll be fondly remembered by future Republicans, unlike Huckabee who'll be a toenail note.

States specifically do not tax certain items in order to reduce the tax burden on the poor...

Spare me the class lesson. Without ADDRESSING SPENDING, the UnFair Tax is more of the same. I'll take paying NO taxes (under Paul) than paying 30$%+ sales tax (under Huckabee).

An actor's endorsement? Why not go with McCain then? Arnold endorsed him.

SIGH.

It tells me that Huckabee promised something to Jim Gilchrist in return for his support. It also tells me Jim Gilchrist had the misfortune to believe him.

So can I believe the same thing about Tancredo's endorsement of Romney? Or is your personal bias informing your statement?

Agreed. I don’t think a brokered convention will produce a Fred nomination.

There's a good chance of that, a brokered convention, if the candidates stay in until the end.

Even after next Tuesday, McCain will probably be about 600 ~ 650 delegates away from the needed 1,190.

Gee, a tax plan that only addresses taxes? Why won't it address the space program too?

These bullet points do NOT deal with Huckabee's tendancy to let criminals out, so they commit additional crimes including rape and murder.

They do NOT deal with the fact that Huckabee often raises taxes with no apparent intent to cut taxes and cut spending.

They do NOT deal with the repeated instances of Huckabee using his official position to put money in his pocket and home improvements and gifts in his house.

Huckabee is going nowhere as a candidate. The sooner he is recognized as political road kill, the better the chances that McCain can be stopped before he becomes the Republican nominee. And if McCain becomes the nominee, either he, Hillary or Obama WILL be the next President. THAT choice gives me the cole robbies.

I agree with you that Fred Thompson WOULD be a fine choice. But in reality, the best he can accomplish at this point is to be someone's Vice President.

I paid attention to #7, but there are 3 particular problems with it:
1 - in the primaries I like to vote for somebody I want to win, not somebody I hope will gum up the works and cause somebody else to be drafted via convention weirdness
2 - given how Fred did in the primaries before he pulled out I don’t really see him bringing much to the table, he’d have to sell his soul in negotiations to build the necessary support
3 - I’m still not sold on Fred anyway, campaign finance reform is a major issue in my book and he was a big part of that (so McCain says)
