Seven good reasons to support Mike Huckabee [be sure to read reason number seven]
The dark and jumbled recesses of my aging feeble brain | January 31, 2008 | Jim Robinson

Posted on 01/31/2008 2:09:25 PM PST by Jim Robinson

My friends, I have to admit that I've been in a bit of a quandary since the Real Conservatives ® Thompson and Hunter dropped out of the race leaving us to to place our bets on one the four headless horsemen. But after having a day or three to sort it all out, I'm beginning to see a ray of hope.

Number one, my worst fear that the pro-abortion, pro-gay, anti-gun social liberal Rudy Giuliani might be nominated, and thereby bring an abrupt and unholy end to the pro-life conservative movement within the GOP has been allayed. His evil culture of death platform has been soundly rejected by the Republican voters. Thank God! If nothing else is gained, that alone is a huge victory for us!

And that leaves us with the unwelcome slippery task of having to determine and select the least evil of the three remaining RINOs. But wait! When choosing between evils, why not choose the good?

McCain is insane and there are many good reasons not to choose him, but I'll list just five: McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Lieberman, the Keating 5, and the Gang of 14. No thanks. McCain is out!

Romney ran on a pro-abortion platform, is pro gay rights, is prone to BIG government solutions, promises anything to anyone for a vote, and flip-flops on important issues. Can't trust him.

Now Governor Huckabee. Could this be the good vs evil? He's a Baptist minister. A genuine 100% pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-gun, Southron Christian social conservative!

And that would be my reason no. 1 to support Huckabee. He has the trust and backing of the Christian evangelicals and the support of the Bible Belt. You cannot win the presidency without the South, and I believe the pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-gun, pro-America Mike Huckabee is the most likely of the three GOP hopefuls to carry the South. And that's a pretty darn good reason!

My number two reason is that he is NOT McCain (and that's a pretty darn good reason too).

Number three (and this will be a tough one for a lot of my FReeper Friends) is that he is NOT Romney.

Numbers four and five are he's NOT Hillary and NOT Obama. Oohrah!

Number six, he plays a mean bass and he's a traditional favorite at Free Republic's infamous quadrennial Inaugural Balls in Washington, DC. Perhaps we could persuade President Huckabee to drop by our ball and perform his rocking rendition of "Sweet Home Alabama!" Now, wouldn't that be a hoot!

Number seven, if we can keep Huckabee in the race all the way through, thus preventing McCain or Romney from gaining enough delegates to win the nomination, then maybe, just maybe a deadlocked convention might seek out another candidate. One who can re-unite the Reagan Coalition, save the GOP, and put us back on the conservative track. Of course, my personal favorite to be that man would be FRed Thompson.

Woo hoo!!

Let it ring out through grassroots America and on to the convention! Support life! Support the GOP! Support Huckabee! And re-draft FRed Thompson!!

Never give in, never give up, and never lose hope.

Long live the Reagan Revolution!

4 out of 10 insane people support Huckabee. The other 6 support McCain. Unfortunately, the crazies appear to be a significant majority.

I don’t disagree with any of that, from skimming it, especially if Thompson were to be brokered in the end. Isn’t there some kind of Ministry (i.e. Minister of Public Speaking ) that could be given to Huckabee in the administration? LOL, but I think he is a good guy

NumbersUSA stated no such thing. They grilled Huckabee on a set of questions to vet out any amnesty weaseling and Huckabee passed. That's why they gave him an "Excellent" rating.

I was present in North Greenville University when Huckabee signed the pledge. Yes, Roy Beck did interview Huckabee before agreeing to appear with him at the signing. I would note however, that in terms of an overall rating for both past actions and present words, Romney and Huckabee are rated excellent with Paul being good and McCain abysmal.

He is the best conservative choice...But, he will not get the nomination. McCain most likely will with Huckabee endorsing him...And perhaps a McCain/Huckabee ticket?

Hey he addresses the Dumond thing on his website. Copied below

Truth Squad: Governor Huckabee's Response to the Wayne Dumond Incident December 05, 2007

This is the transcript from his answer at the press conference today on the Wayne Dumond Case. Governor Huckabee was asked if he had pressured the parole board to release Dumond.

Governor Huckabee: No. I did not. Let me categorically say that I did not. And it's really interesting, if people want to really look into that record. Here's the chronology, and here's the timeline. I'm going to try to do it as briefly as I can, because it's been delved into repeatedly, normally during an election year.

In 1992, Bill Clinton was governor; Jim Guy Tucker was Lieutenant Governor. And during Bill Clinton's governorship, while he was campaigning for president, Jim Guy Tucker signed the papers to commute the sentence of Wayne DuMond to parole eligibility. That's what made him parole eligible in 1992. He had been convicted of rape in Forest City Arkansas, during time of awaiting trial, he was hogtied and castrated; his testicles were later placed in a jar on the desk of a sherriff.

It was a brutal, amazingly, just, complicated case. There were all kinds of questions about the case. Many stories were written; I am sure you can Google all the way back to the 1980s and get more information than you even want on the case. For reasons Bill Clinton and Jim Guy Tucker would have to answer, not me, the sentence was commuted in 1992.

I was not elected to anything at that time; I was a candidate for the United States Senate. I was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1993; in 1996, Wayne DuMond had requested another commutation for time served because the parole board had not granted parole even though he was parole eligible.

Let me make it clear, governors in Arkansas cannot parole anybody. The parole process is separated from governor; the governor can commute a sentence to make it parole eligible. The actual parole is handled completely separate from the governor. Jim Guy Tucker had been convicted of Whitewater related felonies, he resigned. When I came into office in July, the file of Wayne DuMond was on my desk and was transferred to me having been sat there for several months prior to my coming of office.

That request for commutation to time served awaited me. I originally considered it, indicated even an intention I that might grant it. There was and incredible outcry over that, I ultimately requested to deny it. Primarily for the reason I believed there needed to be some supervision; I was not completely confident that it would be appropriate for him to get out without supervision. He had a unblemished prison record - an exemplary record in terms of getting along as an inmate. He had met all the qualifications for being paroled, including having a job lined up, a sponsor with a church I think in Houston, TX, originally.

I chose ultimately not to pardon him. I made a visit to the parole board early in my tenure as a governor at the request of chairman, because you gotta remember, every member of that parole board had been appointed by Jim Guy Tucker or Bill Clinton. Not one of them appointed by me. I'm a new Republican governor, they'd never seen one. I think they had real concern on how to interrelate or how to relate to me. And what kind of attitude I had in general to crime, attitude, parole, etc. So at their invitation, I went to the meeting; someone brought up this case.

Frankly, it was simply part of a broader discussion; I did not ask them to do anything. I did indicate it was sitting at my desk; and I was giving thought to it. But this was probably in, I'm thinking maybe September or October when that meeting was held; I can't remember exactly. The parole board, the following year, early 97 approved his parole plan after I had denied the further commutation.

Subsequent to that, he…I can't remember exactly the timing, he left there, went to MO, unfortunately was later convicted for the murder of one woman and awaiting trial for the murder of another when he died in prison.

It was a horrible situation, horrible, I feel awful about it in every way. I wish that there was some way I could go back and reverse the clock and put him back in prison. But nobody, not me, not Jim Guy Tucker, not Bill Clinton, not that parole board, could ever imagine what might have transpired.

For people to say that I was responsible in getting him out makes a few presumptions - number one, it presumes, I had an influence on Bill Clinton and Jim Guy Tucker in 1992. The second presumption, it assumes I had the amazing persuasive power to go into a board of seven people, all of them appointed by Democratic governors before me and persuade them to do something they didn't wish to do.

It also assumes that, not only did I have that power, but that only two of them changed story about what happened and they didn't do so until 6 years later when we were in the middle of an election year. And after, and subsequent to the fact that I had not reappointed them to their $75,000 jobs on the parole board.

Now if you can follow that line and believe that I am solely responsible, then you'll believe that. But you'll believe a lot of other things as well. I am deeply sorry, and I mean, awfully, just horrified of what happened to (inaudible). And there is not a single person that will ever bring those women back to their families. But that's the story, that's what happened.

And yes it will come up in the presidential campaign. It came up in my governor's campaign. There will be people who are victims who will probably be brought forth to make statements but, you know, I can't fix it. I can only tell the truth and let the truth be my judge.

I can only go with the reason for your strategy in # 7 - that somehow a brokered convention might bring us Fred.

It’s a risky proposal at any rate. I honestly see Romney as a better alternative to McCain for the reason that he doesn’t seem to hate conservatives- and Huckabee...don’t get me started:)

My vote for Fred has already been counted in Florida - so I’m luckily not faced with a strategic voting decision.

No doubt Jim- it’s a mess and your solution is probably as reasonable as any other..

I’m waiting with great interest to see just how McCain handles his meeting at CPAC next week!

Huh? No, I don’t get it, and I think you should take a deep breath and try to be more coherent.

Furthermore, your buds (McCain and Romney, I assume) are even more open to our foreign non-brethren than Huckabee, who at least thinks we have a country here still. They don’t seem to believe we do; McCain has done nothing but undermine Bush abroad, and Romney doesn’t care one way or the other. Whatever gets him elected works. Look at his track record.

I went to the recent Huckabee rally in Birmingham (they planned for 400, got 2000+).

Duncan Hunter was there. It was obvious that Hunter and Huckabee liked each other and had gotten to know each other quite well during the campaign. Huck joked that they had gained such respect for each other that he was afraid his family was going to vote for Hunter.

Other people I respect know Huckabee, too, and speak highly of him. Their opinion and Duncan Hunter’s mean a lot more to me than the pile-on, copycat posters on here declaring Huckabee the sum of all evils.

“Huckabee is a socialist” indeed ... the only “socialist” I’ve ever heard of who is pro-life, pro-Second Amendment, pro-tradtional family, and who has signed a no-tax-increase pledge and wants to abolish the IRS.

Respectfully, and I am just talking in the tactical sense I am not condemning your view, I think that tactic allows huckabee to try and use his delegate count to buy the VP slot.

If his delegates are just enough to put Romney or McCain over the top then it will be a question of his price.

McCain would sell out in a NY nanosecond.

Given the political number crunching I have seen here on FR, I think it will be close enough where Huckabee’s delegates will put it over the top.

don’t forget we also have a few ronpaul delegates to contend with. Heaven forbid his votes become the determiner.

I just don’t see the remaining candidates settling for anything less than a full P or VP slot.

I also don’t see Romney and McCain cutting a deal to shut out the need for Huckabee.

Respectfully.

Mike Huckabee is a pro-life social conservative, pro-gun and pro-family.

So is Ron Paul. And yes he's wrong on Iraq, but at least he'll neutralize the issue with the Dems and capture crossover Dem votes and independents. He'll be a better commander-in-chief than the Dems too. He's far more conservative than Huckster on economic and domestic policies.

You guys truly do not understand that the Democrats are getting all the votes and money. Obama just raised $32 million in January ALONE. Other than evangelicals, who will only donate so much, who's going to donate to Mike Huckabee?

Romney, McCain, or Huckabee CANNOT beat Hillay or Obama. Only Ron Paul can.

Jim, as a conservative Arkansas FReeper who suffered under the Huckster's pro-tax, pro-alien, pro-nanny state programs, pro-pardon for hardened criminals, pro-anything for Huck for 10 long years it pushes me to the verge of depression to see that conservatives have been reduced to selecting which layer at the bottom of the barrell we want to scrape onto our political plate.

Do you have any first-hand experience to help us grasp his character?

“I’d love to be a fly on the wall when McCain offers the VP to Thompson instead of Huckabee......”

I still do not believe that McCain will win the nomination because I have hope that conservatives will vote for Romney on Super Tuesday.

However, if by chance McCAin did win the nomination, I don’t believe McCain will offer the VP position to Fred because Fred is too conservative. If it did happen, I also do not believe that Fred would take it....but if he did take it, it would be the only McCain ticket I would vote for.

Yeah, because libertarians and fiscal conservatives love fee-based taxation, and would never go for the elimination of the IRS

The Fair Tax is a pipe dream, bub. Besides, Huckabee was a recent convert to it when it became political expedient.

Huckabee will never address the spending equation. But he will give "prebates" to losers on welfare and illegal aliens.

FACT: As Governor Of Massachusetts, Governor Romney Took Action To Enforce Immigration Laws.

ENFORCEMENT: In December 2006, Governor Romney Signed A Memorandum Of Agreement With The Federal Government To Allow State Troopers To Enforce Federal Immigration Laws. "Governor Mitt Romney and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Assistant Secretary Julie L. Myers today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and ICE, which will give specially trained Massachusetts State Troopers the authority to administer and enforce federal immigration laws in the Commonwealth. " (Office Of The Governor, "Governor Romney, ICE Sign Immigration Enforcement Pact," Press Release, 12/13/06)

IN-STATE TUITION: Governor Romney Vetoed In-State Tuition For Illegal Immigrants. "Romney also vetoed a number of outside sections of the budget, including:...A plan that would have permitted illegal aliens to pay the same in-state tuition rate at our public colleges and universities as Massachusetts citizens." (Office Of The Governor, "Romney Signs $22.402B Fiscal Year 2005 'No New Tax' Budget," Press Release, 6/25/04)

ENGLISH IMMERSION: Governor Romney Fought Efforts To Weaken Massachusetts' English Immersion Law. "But yesterday, Romney press secretary Shawn Feddeman said the governor will fight all attempts to slow the implementation of English immersion, known on the ballot as Question 2. ... 'He will veto anything that weakens or delays English immersion,' Feddeman said." (Anand Vaishnav, "Romney Firm On English Timetable," The Boston Globe, 1/24/03)

- In June 2002, Mitt Romney Said "The Approach Of English Immersion Is One That I Support. ... I Would Make English Immersion The Educational Norm For All Non-Native English Speakers." (John McElhenny, "Mitt Romney Endorses 'English Immersion' Education Plan," The Associated Press, 6/4/02)

DRIVER'S LICENCES: Governor Romney Opposed Efforts To Give Driver's Licenses To Illegal Immigrants. "'Those who are here illegally should not receive tacit support from our government that gives an indication of legitimacy,' the governor said, echoing arguments that opponents have voiced in the Commonwealth and in other states considering similar license measures. 'If they are here illegally, they should not get driver's licenses,' he said." (Scott S. Greenberger, "Romney Stand Dims Chances Of License For Undocumented," The Boston Globe, 10/28/03)

More at Source

And if you are following Duncan Hunter's lead, you are mistaken...Hunter sold out his soul and his supporters for a VP position. It is a power trip with him, nothing more.
