It can be a challenge and often is. One year, when we had Global Warming, about 15 years ago, it got above freezing over in Canada and the trail turned to mud a day before they reached the finish line. The dogs just couldn’t haul the sleds in mud. They tried, but all but the first couple teams got stuck and that was the end of the race. This year it’s -60 in the same place. Losing 100 degrees is not a favorable omen for Global Warming.
Me too. Just like here in Denver in 1997 when our then mayor, Wellington Webb, held a press conference flanked by a pair of snowplows stating, "We're ready for anything El Nino can dish out." The next day, the city and the airport were paralyzed by three feet of snow. You've gotta love it.
Wait, I thought heat bad, cold good. WTF?
You left out part of that statement. LOL.
While it's true that New York City has had no snow this month, it should also be pointed out that it's been much colder than usual here for the last few weeks. It's been unusually dry because the weather systems moving down from central Canada have kept many of the typical winter storms out in the Atlantic Ocean.
Some of the western suburbs of New York still have snow on the ground that fell in December, BTW. That's pretty unusual for this area.
There has been so much snow up there that avalanches are continually covering up the road. And, they expect another 2 to 3 inches and hour for the next 12 hours.
They must be about ready to open the ice road up in Yellowknife.
Very possible. There are ice bridges here in Fairbanks. Each spring somebody has the honor to be the last one to attempt to cross the river in his pickup truck on the ice bridge.
I used to be in an office where a woman with a relative in Alaska worked. There's a town up there where they put a monument in the ice and then sell raffle shares as to the date and time the ice will break up and the thing will go in the river. It's a small town but the name escapes me right now. It's the most unusual raffle I've ever bought into. :-))
It’s the beginning of The Day After Tomorrow.
Its not nice to fool (with) mother nature.
Nenana Ice Classic. They set up a large timber tripod on the ice and wait until breakup takes the tripod and all. A cable to a clock stops the clock when the tripod moves enough. Railroad town from about 1925 when they built the Alaska Railroad as far as Fairbanks but stopped short of going all the way to the North Slope when Pres Harding died right after his visit (his railroad car is an exhibit in the park here) and Teapot Dome struck down the Republicans for a while. Anchorage was also a railroad town then, a tent city.
