Updated:18:22, Thursday January 31, 2008 Police are urging motorists to be on their guard tonight as fierce winds continue to batter the country with snow and blizzards set to follow.
Drivers have been told avoid the M6 motorway in Cumbria altogether after a lorry driver was killed when his truck was blown over.
The 45-year-old man died when his HGV was swept into the central reservation near to junction 38 of the motorway in Tebay, Cumbria.
Forecasters say 80mph gales will continue through the night in some parts of the country - and will be followed by blizzards, snow and ice in the North.
Heavy snow is predicted to fall on Friday in the far west and north of Scotland, northern parts of England and Wales and Northern Ireland.
There were 10 accidents on the M6 between Kendal and Carlisle, and seven people were injured.

Damn global warming...
Snow in Baghdad, Jerusalem, and worst blizzards in years in China.
Obviously a result of global warming.
And remember that there was no snowfall in NYC for the first time in 70 years. I’m just waiting for global cooling to begin.
ya know , we really need to do something about global warming.. we’re gonna run out of snow shovels at this rate
The Yukon Quest sled dog race from Fairbanks to Whitehorse is about to begin and the mushers are sure happy to see that -60 in the weather report. That’s not even a predicted temperature, it is actual, and none of that wimpy windchill.
IZZAT the same as Iditarod?.....
It’s tougher.
It’s all Algore’s fault.
He’s done gone and made God mad!
Is Monica Lewinsky the Grand Marshall?........Oh, wait, that’s IdiTarod...........never mind.......
There is a measurement of the sun’s magnetic activity, reflecting the heat put out by “Ol’ Sol”, called flux intensity . This measurment is showing some signs of dropping, or at least not rising as much as maybe it should, perhaps, just perhaps, heralding a mini ice age. This is subject of course to dispute.
I love it when ‘Mother Nature’ makes fools out of idiots.

When we have firm confimation of the upcoming cooling cycle, I volunteer to head the group responsible for the slow freezing torture of Al Gore and his scientifically illiterate journalist lackeys. Heh. Gads, I can hardly wait.
