Huckabee says his GOP presidential bid isn't on the ropes
AP on Bakersfield Californian ^ | 1/30/08 | AP

Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee said Wednesday he has no intention of following Rudy Giuliani's planned exit from the GOP race and he dismissed suggestions that his candidacy could split the conservative vote and help rival Sen. John McCain.

With a narrowing Republican field, Huckabee could draw votes from Mitt Romney because of his strong support among the religious right - a possible boost for McCain.

"If the true conservatives are looking for a true conservative, they'll pick me. Romney's record is not a conservative record, his rhetoric is not conservative, even with what he's said and done," Huckabee said.

Huckabee surprised by winning the Iowa caucus, but has little money and finished a distant fourth in Florida.

The former Arkansas governor and Baptist preacher was in Newport Beach for a fundraiser at a supporter's home before traveling to Los Angeles for an Americans of Faith event and to Simi Valley for the GOP presidential debate.

Huckabee also pledged not to drop out of the race, despite his poor showing in recent primaries. He said he would focus his campaign on Southern states that are slated for the Tuesday round of primaries.

"Those are all states where we believe we are not only in play, but we are poised to win," he said.

"This boy isn't on the ropes. There's a saying in the South: 'It ain't the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog,'" Huckabee said.

His morning fundraiser in Newport Beach netted more than $100,000, according to organizers.

"Our campaign is so frugal we could go a month on that," Huckabee quipped to about 200 boisterous supporters and volunteers.

Huckabee also was schedule to attend a dinner fundraiser in Thousand Oaks.

“NBC, CNN and LA Times polls.”

I should have asked what credible polls?

If you’re supporting McQueeg’s stalking horse as though he’s a real candidate, you have fatally flawed judgement and zero political sense.

Funny how FDT is still being pegged as McCain's 'stalking horse' when there's a guy still in the race, without a prayer of winning, and taking conservative votes from McCain's only remaining opponent. And his name isn't "Fred".

Shaking head.

The idea that Huckabee is anybodies man is ridiculous. Huckabee came out of nowhere and turned this race upside down. The conservatives in the party need to ally with the social conservatives/religious right or they are nowhere in terms of primary contests. The reverse is true as well. That is the natural alliance for both. Better start talking to the other or both wings will get shut out of the process in favor of the McCains and the Romneys — picks of the establishment, media and Rockefeller Republican types.

This is why we detest the Huckster so much.

He leaves out all the bad stuff he did, all the spending and tax increases.

Gotcha. Betcha a dime when you face the general election you’ll have to vote “against” even if you don’t vote “for.”

Even if Huckster's record could be excused away, comments like "I didn't raise taxes -- I raised hope" reveal a basic pro-nanny-state mindset that quite properly makes him unacceptable to fiscal conservatives.

There's no way I'm voting for a ticket that has the Huckster in either slot.

The idea that Huckabee is anybodies man is ridiculous.

Not only is it not ridiculous, it's painfully obvious. The next ill word about John McCain that spills from the Huckster's mouth will be the first.

He's in this for one reason, and it isn't because any serious person believes he's ever going to be POTUS. He's there to split the anti-McCain vote while not tearing down the establishment's "chosen one". That's why he hasn't laid a glove on the frontrunner, nor will he.

When McCain gets slaughtered in the general, Mike Huckabee is the man America's going to have to thank for it.

I blame Romney. Huck would have won S. Carolina if not for Romney. Without S. Carolina McCain wouldn’t be in the lead right now. Boo freaking hoo right? It’s a contest . . . these guys are fighting for themselves and what they believe in.

I see. So, are you supporting President Hillary or President Obama? Because, if you aren’t voting for the Republican, that’s who you’re voting for.

You totally have glossed over the problem my Friend. Let me give you a several of examples:

Statesman:

Fred Thompson on McCain - Fiengold:

It did not work out as planned, I think we should scrap the whole thing and go to 24 hour reporting of contributions.

Fred admits that it did not work and proposes a solution.

The Huckster:

Grows the size of government tremendously, raises taxes 600 million more than he cuts them and then has the gall to announce he is a fiscal conservative. He takes no responsibility for his choices, but instead claims that all the taxes were needed. He cuts nothing out of the size of government. He LIES.

McCain:

McCain pushes McCain-Kennedy Amnestey bill which is thoroughly researched and by any objective measure is a AMNESTY bill. McCain consistently LIES about this and says it is not Amnesty because Illegal Aliens have to pay a fine. Completely ignoring that most of the Illegal Aliens have committed not only misdeamoners, but also Felonies by acquiring a fake ID and using the fake ID to acquire medical services and other government services. McCain knows this but still LIES about it.

I hope you see the difference, you can look at from a 150,000 ft level and not see the forest for the trees, however, get down to where you can see some of the details, and you get a far clearer picture.

I plan to vote for Huck here in NJ.

McCain will get my vote in the general if he wins the nomination and doesn't pick a complete loser as his running mate.

Phony Flip will NEVER get my vote.

Huckabee will win GA, AL, MS, TN, AR, MO. Huckabee will be competitive in NC, KY, OH, KS, OK, NE, IN, WI

Exactly. He's going to the convention with a boat-load of delegates. Perhaps not enough to win, but enough to make an impact.

I blame Huck. He could have helped Mitt tremendously by demonstrating how an evangelical Christian can cross religious boundaries and support a better-qualified Mormon. Never understood how, in this country and in this day, a remarkable candidate like Mitt’s can be victimized due to his LDS beliefs.

Mitt appointed homosexual activists as judges in Mass., said that he supported the right of homosexuals to be Scoutmasters, tried to be to the left of Kennedy on abortion and homosexual rights, and you want evangelical support? Your view just doesn’t make sense. At all.

If McCain is the nominee, he’ll likely carry TN in the general. He won’t need my vote. Being in the district that I’m in, I have no say in the US House, State Senate and State House districts, all have been rodent since the 19th century and unless there are dramatic reconfigurations, it won’t change, and I have no plans to vote again for my RINO US Senator who will have no real rodent opposition (ain’t that a surprise — not), so the Presidential race would be the only thing I have to turn out for. Now there is no longer a point. If I vote, it’s going to be for a 3rd party Conservative if one ever appears. Until that time, it’s still “none of the above.”

I vote Conservative. I don’t vote liberal. Both the parties will have liberal nominees. When the GOP decides to put up a Conservative, they’ll have my vote. I’m not going to affirm and rubber stamp the party’s leftward shift. I guess you have no problem doing so. A Pyrhhic victory is no victory.
