Imagine living in a city with the country's highest rate for violent crime and the second-highest unemployment rate. As an added kicker you need more Superfund dollars allocated to your city to clean up contaminated toxic waste sites than just about any other metro.
Unfortunately, this nightmare is a reality for the residents of Detroit. The Motor City grabs the top spot on Forbes' inaugural list of America's Most Miserable Cities.

Wasn’t that the town on “The Big Valley”?
Yep, but that is sure one empty suit.
I wonder why Stockton California is on this list ?
it wouldn’t be bad to hire here and listen to every economic idea she has.. and do the opposite :)
There has been the perception that Flint was a hotbed of Unionism, but I can’t see that it is any different. Maybe in 1937, but not recently. Lansing has state government and a big college population-a hotbed of Liberalism. And a lot of those plants in Lansing have shut down also, and the Oldsmobile Brand is GONE.
It’s good to see that New York City and Chicago and others are on the list. They have such PR machines, but the truth is still getting out there.
Somehow, all cities have a serious downside. And what about Las Vegas, a town whose economy depends on activity that is illegal in other areas? How can you keep that going forever? They did have a steep decline in real estate values.
Shhhhhh, don’t tell anyone how nice Fort Worth is.
perhaps because of the high foreclosure rate? Otherwise Fresno is lots more dank than Stockton.
What Pontiac and his Indian allies couldn’t do the people of Detroit have done it themselves.
Ya gotta love those Tigers though!
The Arabs in Dearborn account for virtually none of the violent crime. I'd feel a lot safer walking through their neighborhoods at night than many others in greater Detroit.
What I don’t understand is why Detroit hasn’t had a death grip on the #1 spot since about 1967, with the exception of perhaps losing the #1 spot to New Orleans in 2005, and perhaps losing it to New York City in 1977.
What city has been worse that Detroit has only become #1 this year? As a lifelong Michigoose, I think I know what I’m talking about here.
Nice museum though. Well, for now. Eventually it’ll be looted and burned.
“Cleveland didnt make the top 10?”
Good Point. Who could miss the “mistake by the lake”?
“Shhhhhh, dont tell anyone how nice Fort Worth is.”
It’s cold and windy here in Cowtown. Or is it hot and windy? I forget.
If Kwame Kilpatrick was a Republican he would have been forced out of office already.
If he was a Republican he wouldn’t be the Mayor of Detroit.
Ya gotta love those Tigers though!
And Red Wings, and Pistons, it’s OK to despise the Lions.

You are right, of course. A big problem with this state is that there are too many towns where Republicans will never be anything but onlookers.
