Imagine living in a city with the country's highest rate for violent crime and the second-highest unemployment rate. As an added kicker you need more Superfund dollars allocated to your city to clean up contaminated toxic waste sites than just about any other metro.
Unfortunately, this nightmare is a reality for the residents of Detroit. The Motor City grabs the top spot on Forbes' inaugural list of America's Most Miserable Cities.

I was in Fresno downtown recently. There were no white people anywhere in sight. It was all poor Mexicans everywhere. The stores on a traffic-free mall downtown are what you’d see in a place like Detroit or bad neighborhoods in the Bronx or Brooklyn. I could just as easily have been in Tijuana, except that it did seem reasonably “safe” at least downtown in the middle of the day. Fresno is in the middle of an rural area, where illegals have forever been coming into work the land.
I ran into this site last night:

The site shows pictures of the Detroit Public School Book Depository and books piled knee deep in an abandoned building. I can’t believe you would just leave these books there to rot, many of them new in their wrappers. Didn’t the kids need them? Couldn’t the school district sell them or give them to more needy districts if they weren’t going to use them? Why let them just sit there?
I’ll have to add it to my other ‘dying Detroit’ sites, such as ‘Forgotten Detroit.’ http://www.forgottendetroit.com/index.html. It’s sad.
radiohead, Michigander by marriage and UM ‘75 and ‘99.
So is Richmond. These cities aren’t going to get better because they don’t have the mindset to get better.
The last time my dad was in NYC, he walked through Central Park at night. A cop stopped him and said “Are you crazy? It’s full of criminals”. My dad asked “If it is full of criminals, why don’t you send the police in there and arrest them?”. The cop was stunned that anyone would think of something so outrageous. Crime is simply expected in urban areas.
We had a mission team come into town this week and they were telling us we need to go into the areas that we normally drive around instead of through. They didn’t understand that we don’t have those areas. There are no bad parts of town here. I can go anywhere I want without fear.
That would be a plus from the state standpoint but the damage would then be national. Hillary has eyes on her and Corzine of New Jersey for weekly economic roundtables. Don’t know how Corzine is doing but I can tell you that raising taxes when a state is in recession is not real popular here.
WE’RE NUMBER 1....WE’RE NUMBER 1....
don’t forget his lying under oath and firing of witnesses cost the city 9 million dollars in judgements...but that’s OK, when this trial was on, his mama ( a congresswoman ) said that she did not care how much public money was spent on this trial, her boy was innocent...
Same way in Atlanta. The suburbs are fine, but the city proper is a mess. And as you say, it's because they don't WANT to get better. The politicians are "getting theirs" and that's all they care about.
yes they do...but some damn good polish food is still available in good ol’ hamtown
Nary a Texas city on the list.
I was born in Michigan, grew up in Michigan, went to college in Michigan. Upon graduation, I decided the state would be a basket case for the next thirty years. I took a job in Texas.
I have lived in Texas since 1979. Never regretted leaving Michigan.

Thanks but what is going on with Stockton CA?
The ironic thing is that Unionism did prevent Communism from rearing its head in this country until recently. Now, what the Unions expected from Corporations, the people now expect from Government. And Corporations did a much better and efficient job at the giveaways, retaining profitability at the same time.
The one thing I am forced to agree with Michael Moore about, is that GM did abandon Flint first. I don’t think that even Michael Moore realized the real reason-to move all the operations to the Detroit Area to lessen and slow the impact on the more politically powerful Detroit, by an auto industry in decline. It was easy for the Detroit Media to then pretend that Detroit was somehow superior to Flint when in fact the two were virtually the same.
flint was a hotbed of militant unionism...that is why flint was abandoned, while at the same time lansing got a new plant and lots of new product..the lansing unions were willing to work with the company, while the unions in flint took a more militant attitude...look at the current crop of plant closings..all of them refused to alter and/or amend the work rules in the national contract, and the ones that did work with the company have been spared...
Waal, , IMHO, she's shure purtier than RINO Ricky Goodhair here in Texas...
...and only slightly more liberal... :-(
Extra commas come at no charge this morning...
The population of the Stockton metro area soared 28% over the past 10 years as people looked for affordable options to the pricey Bay Area. The population flow helped home prices jump 158% between 2000 and 2005, but they have fallen the past two years, as Stockton has one of the highest foreclosure rates in the country.
Yea baby! Two out of the top three.....that's almost a grand slam!
Since we're also going to have to add Kwami Kilpatrick as one of the most, if not the most, disgusting mayors in this country, can we consider this a grand slam then?
Well, there's a ton of Mexicans there, and I don't mean Americans of hispanic descent, but rather recently arrived folks.
Believe it or not but the city of Detroit does not have one single mall.....they're all in the suburbs...
