McCain Triumphant! (Because Character Counts)
Fredericksburg (Va.) Free-Lance Star ^ | 1.30.08

Posted on 01/30/2008 5:47:25 AM PST by meandog

HARACTER COUNTS; some- times it counts in the count. In Florida, Arizona Sen. John McCain yesterday won the Republican primary, overcoming big disadvantages favoring former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. What disadvantages? Let us, well, count.

Mr. Romney built a huge campaign apparatus in Florida over the last year, while Mr. McCain, since his campaign nearly expired last summer, was able to do very little organizationally in the Sunshine State.

Many Floridians voted early--before Mr. McCain picked up the endorsements of Florida U.S. Sen. Mel Marinez and the state's governor, John Crist (to say nothing of Sly Stallone).

The number of voters self-identifying as conservatives rose from 50 percent four years ago to 60 percent this year, and a solid majority preferred Mr. Romney. Independents--a group that has been kind to Mr. McCain--could not vote in the GOP primary.

Yet Mr. McCain pulled out a victory, in no small part, surely, because he seems simply more genuine than his chief GOP opponent, whose stances on key issues such as abortion and immigration have changed with the office he's pursuing. By contrast, Mr. McCain backed a "surge" in Iraq three years before it was ordered, and later when that position badly hurt him in the polls. His "heterodoxies" (ask any of the talk-radio gasbags) on immigration and the environment, whether one agrees with him or not, show him to be a man, not an ambition-twisted taffy stick.

Mr. McCain, now the bona fide Republican front runner, may have saved the angry right from itself. Among Republicans nationally, Mr. McCain has a 71 percent favorable rating, and Independents like him. He could win--and not just the GOP nomination. Never count character out.

But I would be perfectly sane if I supported McMecha, right? It really strikes me how vicious MCainiacs can be, just like that loser they are supporting.

The math at this point breaks down -

Huckabee can’t possibly win.
Evangelicals voting for the Huckster, help McLame.
When offered a choice between a Socialist (Klinton) and a Democrat (McLame), Liberals will vote straight Socialists every time.

Clinton will beat McCain in the General election.

OK I am not that familiar with the POW issues for the last while or so. I can see your point though. Probably not a good way to go about things for sure.

Then give me a reason for voting for McMecha other than that he was a war hero. That’s usually the only thing McCainiacs can come up with, and I say, “So what!” So was George McGovern.

McMecha could beat Clinton, esp. if the Dems are severly divided, though by election time I am fairly sure they will return to the lovefest. I think a lot of senior Dems will vote for McMecha if Obama gets the nod for the Dems. A lot of Hispanics may also vote for McMecha, over Obama, knowing his record supporting shamnesty.

It could well lead to a brokered convention and we can throw all these bums out and get, say, Newt.

Why do we as conservative have to be locked into these frauds? We got round two coming up? People really need to think outside the box.

“However, going with the globalists could wipe such numbers out as meaningless distinctions, imho.”

oh i hear ya, i have serious reservations about the man. that being said if he is the nominee i am still going to hold my nose and vote for him in the general election. sure i wont like it but i have come to terms that if these are the choices then i will go with him.

I like the Newt’s ideas, I just think his character stinks. That issue would be around his neck like the proverbial albatross. I don’t see a dark horse coming up that could win in the general election, and I think that a McCain win is a for-gone conclusion at this point. I am not completely satisfied with Romney, but at least he knows how an economy works. I am supporting him mainly as the only candidate who at this point can even remotely stop McMecha, who I believe will be just another Nixon, who was a big government lib and Keynesian in economics. I already lived through those days of high inflation along with gas and commodity shortages, and have no desire to live through them again. Unfortunately, we're going to have McMecha, Her Thighness, or the Crypto Muslim as POTUS this time next year, and a national trainwreck not long after.

Fits him like a glove. He is even a bigger open borders advocate than Bush. One of his advisors is a dual citizen who was a member of Fox's cabinet in charge of the affairs of the Mexican diaspora, mainly he lobbied the U.S. government to not enforce immigration laws in exchange for Mexican oil.

Virginia Law: Federal and Virginia laws require licensed gun dealers to screen customers through instant background checks. Felons, mentally ill people and domestic abusers are barred from buying firearms. But the state does not require background checks for people who buy guns in private sales at gun shows.

And I said all along, LICENSED dealers. So, do you still want to take the bet? There will NEVER be a way to track private sales, legal or illegal.

Clinton will beat McCain in the General election.

That may well be true...but she also would absolutely cream Mittens with the Clinton slime machine and take a more-than-60-vote majority into the Senate with her...there'd be no stopping any program. At least if McCain should lose (which I don't believe will happen) we still have a chance to filibuster her judicial nominations.

like the Newt’s ideas, I just think his character stinks.

You mean like castigating Clinton for his pecadillos while he was guilty of doing the same exact thing?

I am not completely satisfied with Romney, but at least he knows how an economy works.

Google "Bain Co. + outsourcing" and you'll find the issue that the Dems would absolutely hang the Romulan with on the economy!

You're living in a dreamworld. McCain is going to keep conservatives home in droves. That's going to kill the republicans in the Senate races.

And even if they could filibuster, the dems will nuke the option faster than Richard Reid at Sears Tower. You can thank Loathsome John for leaving them that gift, to go along with all those vacant benches they'll be filling.

This is your original posting: "My wife purchased a handgun at a gun show in Virginia Beach last month, we were with two other people who both purchased handguns and the background checks were the same as at a normal gun shop."...
I said "instant background checks are not required at gun shows and auctions" and, as you know, they aren't when being done by private auctioneers or a vendor attending a gun show...if they were, there would be no need for the General Assembly to debate the issue. Now, I'll make the same bet with you...I bet you $10,000 I can go to a gun show/auction and purchase a firearm without the instant background check. Are we on? If not there is no need to argue anymore as we'll have to respectfully agree to disagree.

"Among Republicans nationally, Mr. McCain has a 71 percent favorable rating"

Are they allowed to just make this crap up?

John McCain will NEVER get my vote and that stands right down to he against Hillary when it counts.

If they GOP nominates this traitorous bastard, then I'm no longer a Republican

You're living in a dreamworld. McCain is going to keep conservatives home in droves. That's going to kill the republicans in the Senate races

You're living in the dreamword...there are a hell of a lot FEWER conservatives these days than when Reagan came on the scene. Ever go into a Walmart? Convenience store? Shopping mall? What do you see? I'll tell you what you see: You see 20-and-30-year-olds with tattoos and body piercings. You see a lot of single moms, you might even see groups of youths together that resemble gangs. You see gay people together and mixed-race couples.

Mitt said in his concession speech last night (words to the effect, "...and we're going to ensure when two young people make a baby they get married first!"

At that point I laughed my butt off...what's he gonna do, stuff the genie back in the bottle?

Don't get me wrong, I loved the 50s when I could hang out in my neighborhood with other kids and parents never worried. Girls were virgins when they got married. When the "class slut" got pregnant in high school, she went off to live with Aunt Mary to have the baby because there was no such thing as abortion. No one knew what the word "marijuana" meant in school and the worst thing you ever did was swipe a cigarette out of your old man's pack and went out in the woods to puff it. But those days gone, so's your dream. Fiscal conservatism is here so let's concentrate on making that work instead.
