Citing the First Amendment, the president of the College of William and Mary will allow students to hold the controversial "Sex Workers' Art Show" on campus next month, the Daily Press reported.

"Defining traditions of openness that sustain universities" require to allow the show, featuring performances by strippers, prostitutes and other sex workers, to go on, Gene Nichol said in a statement released Monday.

traditions of openness that sustain universities

should read "traditions of offensiveness and openness to liberal wackadoodle idiocy that make universities cultural kin to carnival sideshows"

> And in 2006, the cross was removed from the Wren Chapel at W&M, so as not to “offend” anyone........

And the United Methodist member of clergy assigned by the Virginia Conference to W&M, David Hindman, wrote in favor of the cross-removal.

William and Mary may be behind the times. In January, 1997, when I lived in the Boston area, just out of curiosity I phoned the MIT Arts Hotline. The recorded voice told me that January was pornography month at MIT and that the first week of January would be devoted to homosexual pornography. A homosexual porn video would be shown the first week, followed by discussion. Students could also e-mail the film maker with questions.
Parents pay out all that money.

Bill Clinton will probably become a tenured professor there if Hillary loses the election.

I disagree. I see Bill as more of an Activities Counselor.

If my history and memory are still intact, (doubtful, I'm sure), William and Mary is the oldest college in America.

W&M is the second oldest, founded in 1693. Harvard is older (cir. 1636). (When I went to W&M ['88] we called Harvard the "William and Mary of the North". :) I don't even recognize the place anymore. There haven't been any donations from me since Nichols took over.

You are not the only one to stop donating to W&M. In the long run Nichols will do irreparable harm to this once top college.

Actually, you probably can... There are a TON of long-distance/online accredited programs out there now through big universities. It’s something I’m looking into with my daughters (and for myself, too - to get my degree now that they are older).

Thanks for your correction. I'll have to remember that. (Doubtful, I'm sure.): )

As an alumnus, it must gall you to see the college in such a state.

I would counsel you both to consider that decision carefully. While this sort of thing goes on at virtually all “reputable” institutions these days, that should not be your only consideration.

First, if you’ve tought your children well, they should not be as susceptible to these and other distractions.

Moreover, I can tell you from personal experience that going to a so-called “elite” university and, IMPORTANTLY, playing your cards right by majoring in something worthwhile (finance, economics, engineering, hard sciences, etc.) absolutely does wonders for your desirability on the job market.

Beyond that, if a student has decent social skills, he/she will graduate with many good friends who will, undoubtedly, be among the people running this country and its economy, and other countries and their economies, one day. Contacts like that are very valuable, to put it mildly.

The professors may be liberal, the extracurriculars may be.. decadent.. Be that as it may, you have to weigh other factors. Just something to consider.

It galls me to no end. I asked my wife to marry me while we were both students there. We had dreams of sending our children there. But no more. Sigh.

I’m sure if they had a “Beer Drinking Contest”, “Star Trek Convention” or “500 World of Wheels” they would be really popular with the college kids too. And these wouldn’t have anything to do with academics either.
