Regular exercise makes you 10 years younger

Three hours of exercise a week can slow the ageing process and give you a body 10 years younger than a couch potato of the same age, say researchers.

Fitness fans, such as Elle MacPherson, 44, have 'younger' bodies
Scientists at King's College London measured the length of telomeres, which cap the chromosomes in cells and protect them from damage. These shorten with age, meaning more damage occurs.
The team found that people who were active had longer telomeres than those of the same age who were sedentary.
The effect was such that people who did 199 minutes or more a week of moderate to vigorous exercise, such as running, tennis or aerobics, were effectively found to be 10 years younger than those who did on average less than 15 minutes of moderate exercise, even after considering other influences including weight and smoking.
Their findings could explain why fitness fans, such as Elle MacPherson, 44, known as "The Body", age so well.
Writing in the Archives of Internal Medicine, Prof Tim Spector, one of the team, says the study provides "a message that could be used by clinicians to promote the potentially anti-ageing effect of regular exercise".
Master of the obvious pics coming in 3...2...1

Elle creates alot of longer telomeres, regardless of exercise.
Uh, not to say that this is Elle’s secret, but I’ve noticed that a good plastic surgeon works wonders too.
Just saying.
Gotta close that tab ‘cause I can feel them lenghtening now...
Dang...now you tell me.
Between this news report and the usual crop of New Year’s resolutions, the Y was busier today than I’ve seen it in a long time!
bump
I must be a mutant, I’ve been exercising my entire life and I’m still 56 after being born 56 years ago.
I can’t tell how young Elle’s body is. I need more pictures!
It is worse for me. I’m 49, but exercise makes me FEEL like 59! If my dog is pulling on the other end of the leash when running, I finish feeling more like 149...
What is the good of having the body of a 39 year old if you feel 149?
I don’t have any energy to work out and I’m only 22.
Insomnia =(
Whoa, exercise is good for you? Who would have guessed? Amazing!
Are the media abandoning their “everything that is good for us, is bad,” and “everything that is bad for us, is good” campaigns, to undermine the public’s ability to think for themselves and trust in one’s own good senses, so that we need to depend on them to do our thinking for us?
Insomnia =(
Try not drinking any caffeine after breakfast. I just discovered this, after being an insomniac for years. I can now fall asleep and stay asleep. My hours asleep are usually 6 1/2 hrs -- but sometimes it varies, and it can be anywhere from 5 hours to 7 1/2. If I had a regular bedtime, I'm sure I could get the hours to be more regular. But that's the next step. I'm just enjoying the novelty of actually being able to fall asleep. It's great.
I don’t know if I would blame the media for this one —
thinking for yourself requires information. the better the information, the better the decisions and the better the outcome.
Caffeine doesn’t matter for me, unfortunately.
I also probably have central sleep apnea.
Go see a doc, get the machine, you will be amazed! Ok, it’s a PIA to get used to, but it truly can make a surprising difference in your life.
My trials with the CPAP are staying awake for 3 hours and feeling discomfort on my upper lip.
What machine???
BTW, sometimes our friends know what's better for us than we do. I was lamenting my longstanding insomnia to a friend. He asked what I ate and drank. When I told him, he suggested that I stop drinking caffeine, which I drank all day long in the form of sugared tea drinks (Snapple, etc). So I thought I would give it a try.
The next day I drank Snapple only at breakfast, then none for the rest of the day. Surprisingly, it worked! I was able to fall asleep that night. Then the next. And the next. I've been doing this for several weeks now; not even tempted to drink caffeine after breakfast. I guess some of us are more sensitive to caffeine than others. And I seriously did not even have a clue that that's what my problem was.
Other than curing my insomnia, another benefit is that I now have more beverage variety in my life. I now drink orange juice, cranberry juice, tomato juice, grapefruit juice, apple juice. It's actually more fun than just drinking the same thing everyday.
wastedyears (interesting that you would have that name), don't waste any more of your years with insomnia. If there's something that you can use to help with your apnea, do it. It makes life so much better.
