RICHMOND, Va. - If you're served a pitcher of authentic sangria in a Virginia restaurant, someone's breaking the law.
Since 1934, the state has prohibited mixing wine or beer with spirits. Frances McDonald, vice president of La Tasca Spanish Tapas Bar and Restaurants, found that out the hard way when his Alexandria location was cited for violating the sangria ban in 2006 and fined $2,000...

Sangria ban? Don’t their congress critters have anything better to do?
Party time in Virginia! I didn’t know Sangria was illegal...don’t go on any Naval base in Virginia on a weekend....Did I just give that away? lol.
“The Alcoholic Beverage Control Department agent who cited La Tasca even ordered restaurant employees to pour its sangria about 40 liters down the drain,.......”
Stupid, huh?
Sangria is one of the best things in the world.
Neither did we. I went to college in Virginia and Sangria was our favorite beverage. We made it at home, but I’m sure we found out about it initially by having it out.
Better than grilled giraffe?
Heck, can name 2 more places on King St. in Alexandria that serve Sangria as well. This is ridiculous.
I always love to hear of places in our country that have all violent felonies and immigration wiped out and under complete control and have the time to go after jaywalkers and people who tear the tags off of their mattresses. We should all move there since it’s so safe now.
There are sangria recipies that only call for wine.
Tearing the tags off of mattresses? Worthy of the electric chair for sure.
Hijack this thread time...
Where can I get this spirit here in the Lone Star State ;-)
Well, they did finally repeal the abusive driver fees. If they are too busy with sangria, perhaps they might forget to raise our taxes.
Almost as bad as Texas’ TABC/Southern Baptist...never mind, don’t feel like a thread hijack.
What part of Texas are you in? It is legal now and I’ve seen it locally.
