Now it can be told- The Thompson story
foxnews.com ^ | 1/22/2008 | by Carl Cameron

Back in March of 07 at the CPAC convention in DC several former Fred Thompson Congressional staffers told me Fred Thompson was thinking about a run. Some of his Tennessee cronies had been talking him up too.

I reported first that he was eyeing a White House bid. At the time several insiders told me OFF THE RECORD that it was largely a trial ballon to guage his popularity and float his name as a possible vice presidential nominee. I was sworn to silence.

I had no ideaa he was playing the Joker until I saw a bit on him in the news tonight. The New Batman flick looks pretty good in the previews.

First I will say that I have a hard time believing this story is true. I would need to hear that this was a ruse for VP all along directly from Fred’s mouth.

Having said that, *IF* is it true, my opinion is this...

Well, if this was his plan all along, it was one of the crappiest things on the planet.

To set out to deceive people is disgusting and to string them along, all this time, is a deplorable action.

I would be ashamed of Fred Thompson if this were true.

I would never vote any ticket he is on. If we could not take him at his word then, there is no reason to take him at his word ever.

But, considering the source, I will wait to see if it is true before being pissed at Fred.

The rest of the GOP can bite me.
***Well, this is, after all, a conservative website and not a GOP one. .... We are not connected to or funded by any political party, news agency, or any other entity. ....

We oppose all forms of liberalism, socialism, fascism, pacifism, totalitarianism, anarchism, government enforced atheism, abortionism, feminism, homosexualism, racism, wacko environmentalism, judicial activism, etc. .... Free Republic is not a liberal debating society. We are conservative activists dedicated to defending our rights, defending our constitution, defending our republic and defending our traditional American way of life.

Being Vice President means spending four years as President of the Senate, should he choose to grace them with his presence. The exact organization he voluntarily left after 1 1/3 terms. Fred has said numerous times he does not want to be Vice President on anyone's ticket. I'm inclined to believe him on the matter.

Whatever Fred’s initial aspirations where... I doubt he’s interested in being a running mate now. He’s said so on more that one occasion. So at the moment I really don’t expect to see Fred throwing his hat in with anybody...

Sure, that’s what we all say, but we’ll see. I understand that as a brand new Paul supporter, I’m now a pariah to many here.

We’ll see.

I also don’t see Fred throwing his hat in with anybody because I don’t think he is to fond of any of the remaining candidates (some personally and all when it comes to what they represent in terms of conservatism and the direction they would lead the party). Remember he was making this about a battle for the party and what direction it will go.

IMHO McCain would prefer a McCain\Kennedy ticket better.

The ticket of McNuts/Leiberman or McNuts/sKerry weren't liberal enough for ya, huh? LOL

I don’t think McCain would select Thompson for his VP either... Thompson is a conservative, and though McCain likes to talk a conservative game during elections, McCain is not fundamentally a conservative...

I would expect McCain to go with somebody more liberal and controversial... Got to stick in the eye of the conservations you know... Especially when we can no longer do anything about it (when he has the nomination). In addition - picking a conservative for a running mate wouldn’t do much for his “Maverick” bona-fides and wouldn’t garner much seat time on MTP or much love with his beloved liberal media.

You take Carl Cameron’s word for it.

If true...it would be rich.

Huge letdown if true. But he can right the ship by giving his anti-endorsement of Huckabee and sabotage that paternalist, populist’s struggling campaign, sending the silver dagger through that nanny-stater’s heart.

Classic case of life immitating art (or vice-versa). Recall his character in Monster's Ball.

For the life of me, I don’t really understand what motivates any honest person to want to be president, let alone vice president. At best, it is a thankless job. At worst, we get media celebrities like Billorey.
