Wither Fred's Friends?
hughhewitt.townhall.com ^ | 01/22/2008 | Hugh Hewitt

Yesterday's Rasmussen poll in Florida had Mitt Romney up by 5% over McCain, and had Fred pulling 12%. (Giuliani is at 19% and Huck at 13% in this poll.) Now Fred is out and Huck is fading in Florida, raising questions of where there Sunshine State supporters will trend.

This cannot be good news for McCain who needed the conservative vote to stay fractured.

Easy decision? Disappointing decision. But I’m with you. From Fredhead to Mitten.

Rumor has it that if Paul drops out they'll ask him to be their candidate.

That being said, my support for Fred will reluctantly go to Romney.

On the day Fred announced his candidacy, Hewitt posted stats showing a high relapse rate of Fred’s type of cancer, essentially arguing that Fred was not long for this world. And now he wants FredHeads to jump on his bandwagon?

The CP informed me last fall that their convention is in April and no nominee will be selected or voted on until then. However, I strongly believe that Ron Paul (who The CP’s Chuck Baldwin is pulling for) will bolt after Super Tuesday Feb. 5th to The CP...

I have seen two camps here:

(A) anyone but Hillary that has an “R” next to his/her name

-and-

(B) A RINO causes more damage than an outright Democrat because “compromise” bills get passed, and, besides, a message needs to be sent to the RNC.

I fall into camp (B).

Reasonable minds differ, and I respect your position.

Oddly, IF I voted for a RINO, I would pick Rudy, as he is at least honest about being a liberal.

Ug. I guess I’d vote libertarian then.

Yeah but wait until the Clintoons run that issue (Mormonism) into the ground by exposing all the kooky things they believe in. Hit pieces on how the possible future POTUS wears special magic underwear and NEVER takes it off no matter WHAT he’s doing.

I say all this as a Fredhead who now sees myself backing Mitt. The truth is sometimes brutal, but it is the truth none the less.

The Clintons will be ruthless and do ALL they can to peel away Evangelicals and mark my words, Mormonism is going to be a VERY big problem for them. It is a huge problem for me theologically, but a no brainer in a head to head with ANY of the 3 Dems.

Is there a dime’s difference between McCain & Huck on conservative issues?

Actually I think there is a good bit of difference between them. As much as I dislike a good number of McCain's initiatives, he has been pretty good about keeping spending down, and certianly more supportive of the WOT (though he has his problems there too). McCain is no conservative, but no one running now is (including Romney). (It boggles my mind that people think a conservative could ever win a statewide election in Kennedy's home state).

I have to look at what's left at the bottom of the barrel and decide which of the left overs I can stomach. Which one will govern the most conservatively of the four. Right now I rank the remainder in this order:

Giullianni
McCain
Romney
Huckabee

In the Republican party it seems that the best rise to the top where we skim them off to get to the real nasty ones.

I saw Fred as the only possibility in the pack. Now, I can’t see myself voting for any of the contenders. My only prayer is that it will go to the convention and Jeb Bush will be the party’s nominee, with maybe Fred as VP>

I don’t like Romney, but I wouldn’t call him a Marxist.

Might be time to rethink that third party notion.

We know the DhimmiRats won’t support conservative values.
And, it looks a lot like the RepubliCrats don’t have the stones to stand up to for them, at this point.

Granted, fracturing the electorate with a third party might push the pollsters over the edge (not a bad thing, necessarily), and may well assure a Dem victory in ‘08, it would also give voice to the fundamental principles on which this grand experiment was founded. It would be in keeping with the spirit of the First Revolution.

The question is...can there be fashioned a platform from conservative positions that would attract sufficient numbers of voters to be a viable constituency? I think the answer to that one is Yes...

Think I’ll pop over to the Constitution Party’s website for a quick look-see.

“That’s the way to win them over... by insulting them with mixed metaphors. Brilliant.”

I am not trying to win them over. They’ve made their decisons, they are within their god given rights. Who am I to attempt to get them to swallow their principles? People tried that BS with me in ‘06 when I refused to vote for the slate of RINO’s or send one thin dime to the RNC. I have still not donated to the RNC and will not in the forseeable future.

However you are correct my needling was uncalled for and impolite and to any who were genuinley offended, I apologize.

Huckabilly already did that. Gave Mitt an innoculation. Besides, I think most Americans don't give a rat's ass about someone else's religion.

"From Fredhead to Mitten."

I'll keep it rolling. Sadly me too.

Certainly not how I expected things to roll out, I thought Thompson would get immediate traction and that getting in late was a smart move but so it goes, Romney is the last stop before outright despair.

It’s not clear to me that any of them are electable.

I think I’ll pick up my marbles, put them away in a drawer for a later occasion, and watch what happens.

I wouldn’t touch Giuliani, McCain, or Huckabee with a ten-foot pole. I’m not fond of Romney, either. So I’ll wait and see how this works out.

Your list is interesting. There is not much support for Rudy here. I suppose you ranked him first because you believe him to be honest in the sense that he says what he really means and at least you would know what you are voting for. If I were voting in FL however, I would vote Romney.
