TAJI, Iraq, Jan. 17, 2008 – A ceremony here today marked the beginning of a program to refurbish and transfer more than 4,200 up-armored Humvees over the next 13 months.

Some 627 vehicles now are staged in the holding yard ready to undergo a maintenance overhaul of brakes, belts and fluids before the appropriate paint scheme is applied. Once this process is completed, including quality assurance checks, the vehicles will be transferred to the government of Iraq for further distribution to the Iraqi security forces, U.S. officials said.

“These vehicles are very important to the Iraqi National Police as well as the Iraqi army forces,” Iraqi Interior Minister Jawad al-Bulani said. “The people of Iraq will be proud to see the police and the military using these vehicles.”

U.S. Army Maj. Gen. George Smith, director of the Security Assistance Office, said these Humvees “will provide protected mobility for the many Iraqi security forces who will receive them.”

Smith told the crowd that these vehicles used by American soldiers served as work horses and will equally help Iraqi military and policemen, providing them with enhanced firepower and force protection.

The goal is to transfer 4,244 vehicles to the Iraqi security forces by the end of 2008. The refurbishment process is a 13-month program, which includes light maintenance and painting. The contract can be extended by an additional six months. This contract will generate more than 500 jobs and has the potential to serve as an on-the-job training mechanism for Iraqi soldiers who have completed their initial training. It’ll serve as a mechanism to ensure the long-term capability to maintain this fleet of vehicles by the Iraqi army.

Officials aim for the program to complete the transfer of more than 8,000 vehicles to the Iraqi government by the end of 2009.

MNSTC-I used the US ISF Fund to buy used M1114s "excess to in-theater needs" from the US Army and motorize the rest of the IA. They justified the excess to needs with the delivery of MRAPs. Some in congress are not particularly happy with this backdoor assistance...

And just how many days will it be before some of these are appropriated by the terrorists and used against our forces?

I was told by someone in the “know” that most of our heavy equipment will not come back to the states.

Good point. The surge is working because A LOT of our soldiers are down there, kicking the living shiite of these Islamic animals.

Been reading Michael Yon a lot recently, and the Iraqis are taking a lot of the duties though...so Im praying this will be for the good of sending our soldiers back stateside safely.

WE might want to tranfer these Humvees back here to transport all these sub prime home buyers out of their homes after foreclosures by the millions. I’m getting to where I don’t give a rip about Iraq.

Give them what they need. Our media has forgotten Iraq, and so has small minded,
selfish, Americans who think freedom is a right from the Government. BAH!

Keep up the fight Iraqis, honorable Americans support you and your country!

M1114s are not heavy equipment. They are uparmored modern Jeeps.

The M1114s were the interim version that does not fit with the US Army’s lift pacage for air transportability. Those versions are the M1151/1152 series that include removable armor. The Army was going to get rid of these used M1114s one way or another anyway.

The heavy equipment most likely to be outright donated are the old M113s APCs that the Army wants to replace.

Most of Iraq’s heavy equipment is being bought by Iraq thru US FMS. They are appropriating 9 billion (of 40 billion budget) to their own ISF development. The US is contributing all of 3 billion. Mostly for the trucks that we agreed on for the original 10 Iraqi Divisions that we had not delivered yet...

Yes, the priorities in our New Global Order are a little difficult to figure out aren’t they? Billions siphoned off by corruption, billions given away to what is very likely the seat of corruption, the new Iraqi Gov’t while hundreds of thousands lose their homes, the economy tanks and Congress continues earmarks unlimited.

I’m having a hard time focusing on the objectives, let alone the candidates.

Just fantastic to see that the dems and media's strategy to numb down has worked on you... meanwhile we are winning this war.

Why should it? Our politic ans never want that stuff around because they know eventually we will have to use it on them!
