FRED THOMPSON, IN OR OUT? (Mother in hospital)
PowerLine ^ | January 19, 2008

Posted on 01/19/2008 8:07:10 PM PST by restornu

Fred Thompson just spoke to his supporters in South Carolina, where he appears headed for a weak third or fourth place finish. Thompson thanked everyone and then spoke about America and conservatism's contribution to it. He did not talk about Florida or being in the race to stay.

Word is that Thompson will return to Tennessee to visit his mother in the hospital. While he's there, presumably, he'll consider his options. Frankly, and I say this with regret, it's difficult to see the case for him remaining in the race.

And I would expect this type of supposition from a Mitt Supporter as well.

I heard the speech, I was really expecting him to conclude his statement with an endorsement.

If he were to step down I do hope he gets at least a cabinet position in a Republican (likely McCain) presidency.

Sad to hear about his mom, I wish him and his family the best.

“Huckabee isn’t the worst of the worse.”

Huckabee is an abomination.

He needs to go back to Dogpatch and solicit more wedding gifts.

I like that sentiment. A lovely conservative black woman named Kay Cole James was tapped by Reagan for an important job in (I believe) Health and Human Svcs. Her mother was in hospital and bad off, so Kay was going to turn Reagan down. Her momma said (paraphrased), Girl, how many black women do you reckon he will ask. Get on out of here and take that job. I hope Fred's mom is able and strong enough to encourage him. She has to be in her 80's

"FRED THOMPSON, IN OR OUT?"

I first heard of this guy in '98 or so. It was in the context of his destiny to be Prez. I bought it right away. Didn't hear much about him after that and I never watched his TV show but was buoyed that his time had arrived. Then it became as plain to me as to everyone else he wasn't going to do it. From the get go his excuses were weak and our self denial was self transparent.

The mystery (for now) Of Fred Thompson.

Romney-Palin '08!

“Huckabee must be stopped so McCain can be handed the nomination? Not a chance. Your cure is worse then the disease. With Huck we at least get good Judges. With McCain we get de nada. Just like we have for the last 8 years.”

We will get higher taxes with Huckabee and his support of the war is questionable.

With McCain we will continue to fight and win the war and fiscal responsibility. In addition, McCain will appoint good judges, he has said he would appoint a judge like Alito.

Not to mention, who is more likely to push a conservative judge through the Dem controlled Senate? Just because Huckabee were to appoint someone the libs would assume the worst and do their best to Bork the nominee. McCain would be better at selling a nominee to the Dems than Huckabee.

Neither are perfect candidates, (what candidates are though?), but they, outside of Fred, are probably the only two left I could hold my stomache and vote for. I might feel dirty afterwards, but I could bring myself to do it. I could probably bring myself to vote for McCain if Hillary wins the Dems. Other than that, no voting for me.

I like your positive style Rational! Me and my money are with Fred for as long as he wants to stay in, and even if he drops out he will get my write-in vote. Fred is the best thing to come along since Reagan, and above all he is a man of honor, integrity, and principle.

Agree. Other than loony Ron Paul, Huckabee is the weakest of the Republican candidates on national defense.

Maybe that much is true. Though he is loathed here, I think Rudy would be a more honest POTUS than Huck. If he too would nominate judges who do not make law, I could live with him.

FRed is the only one that has it altogether for the social conservatives, the fiscal conservatives and the security conservatives.

Jim, I needed that. There is a lot of doom and gloom on the site re. Fred. Lets hope Momma tells him to go kick some rino butt. He is the man we need.

Regards

This campaign has been the nastiest I’ve ever witnessed. The continual drumbeat of anti-Thompson rhetoric is unbelievable. Just nasty — rather than addressing his policies and positions, it’s always been the same: he’s dropping out so don’t vote for him in the primaries. Just nasty trickery.

It is so difficult when you reach the point in life where parents are getting very elderly and you’re subject to receiving a call in the middle of any given night saying they’re either very sick and in the hospital or else that they have passed away. When you’re young and parents are relatively young, you just don’t think about things like that under normal circumstances and then before you know it you’re thrown into having to face it. Age has a way of flying up and pouncing on you; and about by the time you bury your last parent you suddenly realize that you are old yourself.
