Thompson plans to go on to Florida

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Fred Thompson, trailing Mike Huckabee and John McCain in the polls, will continue his presidential bid even if he finishes third in today's South Carolina primary, his campaign said.

Thompson, who had talked of South Carolina as his last stand, appeared this afternoon at a gun show in a suburban Shriners' auditorium -- a natural fit given his strong support of the Second Amendment right to own firearms. Several patrons wore "Fred '08" stickers on their clothing; as Thompson swept into the packed hall he was greeted by a modest round of applause.

"Go, Fred!" one woman shouted.

"How we doin'?" Thompson asked, greeting passers-by as he walked along the narrow aisles displaying hunting scopes and high-tech shotguns. He shook hands, paused for autographs, and posed for photos snapped on cell phones.

More like he knows what trouble the country is if one of the other four factional candidates splits the party.

That was probably a smart move...

Bob Dole’s spinelessness did it for me...

If Fred can stay in with the poor showing he’s had so far, then Huckabee can stay in as well. same for all the candidates, but he still has to win a primary at some point.

A brokered convention can nominate anyone it chooses. Irrespective of winning a primary.

Delegate count is more important than winning a primary.

Maybe. But we will just have to see what he does and we don’t quite know the results yet. Sit tight we will know soon.

“In my scenerio it will come down to who can win in the general and who best represents the Reagan Coaltion.”

Sorry I have to disagree with you on this. I think Fred would get killed in the general election. He officially entered the race as a contender, polling 2nd nationally. As of now he has yet to win a primary and seems at this very moment to be on his way to an at best 3rd place finish in SC. Whether fair or not the public finds him uninspiring. He’s ran a campaign of I’m Just Fred. Voters don’t seem interested in Just Fred. So a brokered convention may not just be about delegate count, but electablity seems certain to play a role, and Fred doesn’t seem to have that.

It's because the MSM decided to ignore him after the novelty factor wore off. Poll numbers are affected by media coverage.

Fred's sure getting alot of attention from the MSM today, isn't he?

My contempt for them knows no bounds.

“Delegate count is more important than winning a primary.”

Right. So what does Freds delegate count look like with a 3rd place finish in SC?

San Diego county is a red county but not by much.
and the largest, most populated red.

Orange County is heading to Blue if not there already. LA County, blue. Frisco and Bay area Blue. Santa Barbara blue, etc.
Most of the other counties that have small populations are red.

The registration in Calif. is vastly Dem.
Our state republican days are over, and say that as a several decade native

“However if Fred finishes 3rd, or maybe even 2nd in SC, and the ordinary people take a look just before Super Tuesday to see who is running and Fred hasn’t won a contest yet, and is polling single digits in most places. What makes you think they’ll vote for him when he looks like a sure loser.”

Because they will have heard him speak more, and will have seen him in at least two debates before Super Tuesday. Then they will realize that Fred is the real conservative in the race. GO FRED!

Levin had Fred on yesterday.

He thinks the world of Fred ~ has been to his home and respects and admires the man no end.
He said something like, “If only you could know Fred as I do...”

They’re not close friends personally, but ideologically.

Fred is doing fine in South Carolina today. We are getting out the vote. Just wait for the results.

If you are right, I'll send you a bottle of your favorite bourbon.

One could also argue, if it wasn't a "must win" why didn't he say so?

I saw the same interview.

Fred doesn't know what he will do after SC. It all depends on the 'lay of the land' after the votes are in.

It would be stupid to drop out in a very fluid dynamic race or to make unequivocal commitments on future courses of action when you're still receiving funding and the final outcome is in doubt..

I haven't contributed a dime to the RNC since we last heard read my lips.

Yeah...that was a show stopper for me to.

The people of SC saw him debate last week...a debate that he supposedly did very well in....how’s he doing in SC?
Nobdy that doesn’t already know his positions is going to care enough to find out. The question I asked was to a response that Fred could still come back because regular voters, not political junkies, hadn’t even started to pay attention yet.So what’s likely to make them start listening to a 2nd tier guy polling single digits.
Right now the only way I can see Fred getting the nomination is if some freak accident takes everybody else out of the race. Shoot he might not even get it then.

You're jumping the gun. Wait until 'Super Tuesday'.

And, BTW, total delegate count can be ignored at a brokered convention.

I was born in East Los Angeles in 1943 and now live in Orange County. It was once quite conservative.

We made it a great state but like all things great we we were invaded by parasites.

Parasites (i.e. liberals) always go after what is good and strong then feed from it until dies.

There is a conservative remnant here. Not Rinos like Arnold. They may come out for Fred. IMO.

And what Super Tuesday states does Fred carry now that he is for all intents and purposes 2nd tier.
For Fred to win the nomination the thing that has to be ignored is not delegates, but rather reality.
He’s done, and with Hunter dropping out my guess is Fred will be the new Hunter...you know under 5%

Unfortunately, he hasn't gotten that much support from the conservative base. That base is split several ways, at this point. It remains to be seen which candidate will ultimately prevail. I'm hoping it's Fred, because I think he'd be able to bring in conservative as well as some moderate Republicans, as well as some Democrats.

Everyone seems to be acting as though the General Election is next week, and we have to have the nominee decided NOW. It's several months before that happens, so there is time for each state's voters to make their decisions. This election isn't like the last few have been, so folks don't know what to think about it. Applying what's become conventional wisdom about primary elections isn't useful.
