I was surprised to hear Rush Limbaugh the other day say that there was no 'Thoroughbred' Conservative in the 2008 Republican nomination Field for President. I was thinking to myself, What? Rep. Duncan Hunter is Conservative right down the line. From his web site: Hunter' Ratings
National Rifle Association: A+
Americans for Better Immigration: A+
Eagle Forum: 100%
Christian Coalition: 100%
Family Research Council Action: 100%
Campaign for Working Families: 100%
Concerned Women for America: 100%
National Right to Life Committee: 100%
Federation for American Immigration Reform: 100%
National Federation of Independent Business: 100%
Gun Owners of America: A (Read GOA article here)
** GodVoters.org: A ** (the ONLY A they gave) (See their endorsement here)
American Conservative Union: 92%
Americans for Tax Reform: 88.5% (lifetime, most recent rating was 100%)
National Tax Limitation Committee: 88
National Taxpayers Union: B
ACLU: 7% (indicates very conservative)
NARAL: 0% (indicates a pro-life record)
Exactly how Conservative can you get? Ok, so what's with Limbaugh? Simple, found this On the Hill article that says:
"It is difficult to change Rep. Duncan Hunters mind. House leadership officials and the White House have found that out the hard way."
"When they wanted him to vote for a pending trade bill last year, Hunter (R-Calif.) refused again and again. And when the Bush administration tried to convince the powerful Armed Services Committee on its controversial port security plan, Hunter refused to budge."
"Twisting Hunters arm is impossible, his close friends say."
The article continues:
"And Hunter, whom many call a protectionist, was instrumental in scuttling a deal that would have given the operations at six major U.S. ports to Dubai Ports World, a company owned by the United Arab Emirates."
He was shocked that the administration approved the deal, said Rep. Jim Saxton (R-N.J.), a senior member of Hunters committee and a close friend. Saxton worked with Hunter to introduce legislation blocking the deal and revising the foreign-investment process to ensure national security.
On the Dubai issue, he got all fired up, a congressional source said. Hunter gathered information to prove that Dubai has not been trustworthy despite repeated administration assertions that the UAE is a vital ally in the war on terrorism."
"It is not often that a guest on a TV news program has the boldness to put the interviewers political-activism past in the open, but Hunter wasnt one to shy away. He made sure to point out, three times, that George Stephanopoulos, the host of ABCs This Week, had worked for President Clinton, who supported the Dubai Ports deal."
I dont think President Clinton, your old boss, knows the facts of the transshipment that take place through Dubai sending nuclear components to all parts of the world, Hunter told Stephanopoulos, in one of the references to Clinton."
I remember Rush getting particularly getting bent out of shape on the issue:
Rush probably felt he could personally change every American's mind on the issue from behind the EIB Golden Microphone, but alas, the deal fell through. Is El Rushbo taking out his frustration on the actual 'Thoroughbred Conservative' Republican Candidate for POTUS in 2008?
Hey Rush, why don't you give your ego a break bud?
Its the same reason why Rush doesn’t back Thompson. He doesn’t want to support someone who will not win. Rush talks about Conservativism works everytime its tried, but he never backs any candidates that do try it.
No, really, the comment may have been a bit tacky, but it’s the truth.
Duncan Hunter is a nice guy and I hope he has a future of importance in the party, but he is definitely the WHO? candidate if you talk to anyone besides wonks.
I disagree with you in that I believe he did stump for it for quite a while.
Mostly by deriding those that opposed it.
He was quite wordy on the issue IIRC.
Bless his heart........ He did good at all but preparing for a Presidential run...... Guess he couldn’t do or be all things.
I have not seen a single Hate Hunter poster on this thread.
Don’t be so paranoid.
Just because most of us don’t see DH as having a real chance does not mean we hate him.
Where’s the hate?
Where’s the love?
Yes, I am aware of who I am. Thanks!
;*)
Au contraire, I think its plenty funny. Hunter cant even poll 1 % in his native California yet you have his "supporters" (like the guy who posted this) that deride each and every other candidate here as being a rino or a sellout on this or that issue. Fact is, Hunter is like Chris Dodd as far as "running" goes: theres no reason whatsoever for him to be doing so, given that he's not raising any money, garnering support, or etc.
I'm for Thompson, and if he falls through then Im for Romney, and I can barely stand the others .. Those two are the most likely to give us conservative judges and keep size of gov't small, IMO. And that hardly makes me a RINO, for example. Or Don Quixote, I should add.
Go WTO go!
Who needs a Congress when we can let them decide everything?
Their goal BTW.
Rush has said numerous times that he does not endorse any candidates in the primaries.
Rush has said at least twice that I’ve heard that it is the responsiblity of each candidate to make himself known. Hunter has simply been unable to do that.
I don’t think the Dubai Ports issue has anything to do with his lack of support for Hunter. Rush is just being realistic. Hunter is not going to be the nominee.
“Once they stop attacking the decent and good conservatives who can actually win the nomination, then well stop.”
Are you talking about McCain, Huckabee and Paul? Because that’s the only ones I’ve gone after. I’ve come to the conclusion you can’t even read or follow a thread. You and a couple other Hunter Hunters start it every time.
Or perhaps you like those three, along with the democrats?
A DEMOCRATIC PARTY STRAW POLL
It may be snowing here in Washington, D.C., but the sun is apparently shinning on Congressman Ron Paul, who edged out Senator John McCain in the 2008 Democratic Party Republican Straw Poll. Meanwhile, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani ended up in a familiar place: sixth.
Top 3 results: Candidate %
Rep. Ron Paul 25.72%
Sen. John McCain 24.73%
Gov. Mike Huckabee 17.17%

I don’t know about the other guy, but I came on this thread ... not to bash Hunter ... but to see what the Rush angle was all about.
And to defend Rush if need be. (not that he needs it)
“Umm.. Rush rightfully supports free markets”
No he doesn’t. He supports tax payer subsidized managed trade, which is what we’ve got. Just like you, for people who can’t make a business run without cheating. It’s NOT free market.
LOL
OK, I was and still am 100% against the Dubai issue in any way. Just something interesting, take a look at a thread that is here at FR about Dubai to Build $600M Hub in US "Corridor of Shame". It always shocks me when I see articles like that and see so many that are FOR it. This is right here at FR and not only Rush and others being for Dubai.
I disagree with them but it still does not make Rush a jerk or those on here jerks that seem to think Dubai will be good for America. I think it is just theyh look at Dubai and our security different then I do. I am extreme about not wanting any dealings with the likes of Dubai, I do NOT trust them at all.
The way I read this article, it also believe it or not, promotes Hunter as an awesome man, strong in what he believes in and will go to the end of time with his beliefs of what is right and wrong. I LOVE THAT! Especially because I agree with Hunter completely!
He truly is the ONLY man that is 100% conservative, a man that will take a stand for our country from the enemies within ( the dems and rino's) and do what is best for America.
The only other man that would be good is Fred Thompson. But this thread is about Hunter.
Here is what I have observed, and it is very concerning to me:
The Republican party has left it's conservative base almost in the dust. This election will be either a time to keep it alive or kill it off. That will be up to how many conservatives wise up, wake up and stop pushing rino's like Rudy, McCain, Huckabee etc. Conservatives seem to have fallen for the BS of the media of who can beat Hillary or Obama instead of staying strong and going all out to support a conservative. It can be seen here at FR, and other places online and in person as well. IMO a true conservative could never support a rino like the ones I mentioned. And if they have over the years doing the lesser of two evils thing then one would hope by now they would be sick or it and see that it is just voting for a Democrat lite.
Now this will not be taken kindly by Hunter's campaign people but his campaign stinks. He has got to have the worst working for him. They have not promoted him well at all. One of my friends has a blog, and it has been almost impossible to post things about him with no videos (recent) and even audio's of his latest speaking engagemnents he has had.
When he first started and even now there is no blog roll for him, like you see with the others. Hell even Fred Thompson's blog rolls are not updated so there too more slacking off for a conservative candidate. And yes emails were sent asking about this and guess what no replies. sheesh!!!!!!
Everyone at a friend of mine's blog is FOR Hunter FIRST and then for Thompson second. Because of the lack of whatever happening for Hunter we are all pulling for Thompson.
You have to understand to give money to a candidate that has a campagin manager or whoever it is that is NOT promoting him to even help all of us propmote him as well, it is only going to make sure that a rino wins instead of the ONLY other conservative running, Thompson.
This is the reality, not some article like the one for this thread that could easily apply to the many even here at FR that are FOR Dubai ports and the "Dubai to Build $600M Hub in US "Corridor of Shame".
I cannot tell you how disappointed I am at what has happened to Hunter because he truly is my first choice. It not only disappoints me but scares the hell out of me for my beloved America. I made my mind up never to vote for a rino again after voting for rino Bush! So for me it is Thompson and maybe if God smiles down on us he will pick Hunter for a VP. And I would love John Bolton for Sec. of Defense.
I invite you to check out Onerom99's posting history and come back and tell me then about how no one here hates Hunter.
He lacks support because he lacks exposure because he lacks support because he lacks exposure, etc. He has not broken out of that cycle. Because of his conservatism, the press keeps the lights off the man. Breaking out of the cycle is mostly his job. His supporters can help. Kind words from those who give endorsements can help. Ann Coulter has had positive words. Rush should also. But I'm not surprised that Rush mentions Fred and Mitt most often as they appear to be the most viable, most conservative candidates right now. Maybe a brokered convention is Duncan's best hope.
My only possible concern would be on trade. But who’s to say that China is not a concern and that trade with China should not be an issue? Also his emphasis on keeping industrial skills that are vital to national defense on shore is a valid national security issue - not an invalid trade issue.
You are probably right about Rush.
But here’s the real problem: being Republican or conservative is not what it used to be. They’ve been keeping themselves about the same distance above the Democrat/liberal moral plane, which is continually flying lower in the canyons of immorality, and the R/C plane is now low enough to smack into mountain peaks of disobedience more often.
I do like Hunter over the others, but the celebrity addicted public are not interested in substance, unless it’s a handout. The majority of folks just don’t want to do the ‘work’ of reading and researching a candidates record, thereby being easily led about the socialist MSM.
Rush does a good job most of the time, but he flies his R/C plane lower than I prefer.
