At the Beacon, Thompson offers conservative a'plenty

Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson played up his Southern roots and his conservative resume Friday during a campaign stop at the Beacon Drive-In.

"It's so good to be here among folks who don't think I talk funny," Thompson, a former Tennessee senator, said to a crowd of about 300.

He did little campaigning in states where they do think he talks funny - Iowa, New Hampshire and Michigan - and the results were predictable. He was third in Iowa, sixth in New Hampshire and fifth in Michigan.

Thompson spent most of the past two weeks traveling across South Carolina, and today's primary is crucial for him. He didn't say a poor showing would be the end of the line, but he did say the state is "very important" for his campaign.

Thompson told an appreciative crowd at the Beacon that curbing illegal immigration, a hot-button issue for voters here, would be a top priority for him.

Ah - The Beacon!! Couple of coronary arteries clogged up just thinking about that place.

I spoke with my sister in Spartanburg last night. She and husband are liking Fred.

The Beacon stands for old-fashioned things...God, country, family, friends, children, and a decent meal at a fair price.

Weather forecast looks like snow/rain over the whole state today. If that suppresses turnout, who does that favor?

Put at least two votes for Fred down as cast. Turnout appeared light. Been raining here since 5:30 AM and is forecast to get worse.

(p)I didn't hear Rushs program today but I did read about his comment which, if I understand correctly, wasn't his but the words of another person. True he did say them which is good and shows his leanings however IMHO, if he wanted to give the conservative cause a great shot in the arm he should have been plugging Fred Thompson all week. This would have been good for Fred.

Again, in my opinion, Rush doesn't want to endorse anyone because if they don't win then his reputation is damaged.

Don't get me wrong, I think Rush is great and I think he is smart but after all, Fred Thompson is the only (except for Duncan Hunter)person that the MSM is not trying to jam down our throats.

I am a die hard but the cards are stacked against Fred and it worries me that he will quit and then we will not have anyone that is conservative.

This country needs Fred Thompson and he is slowly being pushed by the way side by the very people that are making our selection for us and we have very little control to stop it. The MSM must be peeing their pants at how they are shaping the Republican party when they did not have a prayer in the beginning.

Light rain here, too. Supposed to change to snow later.

My wife and I are leaving shortly to vote for FRed...weather be damned.

Both of us would crawl to the polling place over broken glass to vote FOR FRed, and against McCain/Huckleberry.

Yes he is... and to support anyone other than Fred is to support a Party destroying liberal Republican.

Yeah! Wish I could vote for Fred today but hopefully your votes will give us here on the west coast our chance to vote for him.

Good for you, PalmettoMason! Here’s hoping there’s a quarter million more of you down there willing to brave the storm for Fred. Waking up this morning in northern Virginia, I was thinking: how can any truly principled Republican be waking up this morning anxious to pull the lever for McNasty or the Huckster? It really makes me question the wisdom of our fellow citizens.

South Carolina stepped up and did the right thing in 2000. I hope it will be a repeat performance today.

Best regards,

Thank you. Maybe I’ll get a chance to vote for Fred on Super Tuesday.

One vote cast. Wife is leaving to cast hers shortly.

At 9:45 I was voter # 109. Poll workers decribed the turnout as unusually strong.

I believe the pollsters and pundits have screwed the pooch on this one. FRED WILL WIN!

Weather forecasters also got it wrong. We have light rain, and the temperature is rising, not falling.

Finally, all you need to know about McCain is that he is supported by Lindsay Graham.
All you need to know about Huckabee is that he is supported by David Beasley.

Mama always said that you were judged by the company you keep....
