Thompson Rises to Third in SC Poll
Boston.com ^ | 17 January, 2008 | Foon Rhee

Fred Thompson, making what could be his last stand in South Carolina, has inched up to third in the latest tracking poll leading up to Saturday's first-in-the-South primary. Thompson has 14 percent in the Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released this morning, sliding ahead of Mitt Romney, who slipped to 12 percent, even though some of the polling was done after he won the Michigan primary on Tuesday. Romney is chasing delegates in Nevada, whose caucuses are also Saturday, after saying he believes John McCain has South Carolina locked up. McCain held his lead in the new poll, with 29 percent, compared to 22 percent for Mike Huckabee. Ron Paul and Rudy Giuliani were tied at 5 percent, according to the poll. A Clemson University poll also gave McCain a 29 percent-22 percent edge over Huckabee, who won the leadoff caucuses in Iowa but hasn't finished better than third since. Thompson, the former US senator from Tennessee, plans to air a 60-second ad during today's evening news across South Carolina in which he talks up his conservative credentials in a folksy way designed to appeal to Southern voters. "I've been a conservative all my life," he says, then citing his "100 percent pro-life" record and asserting that Americans' fundamental rights come "from God, not government." McCain, meanwhile, picked up the endorsement today of the Charleston Post and Courier, which also endorsed him in 2000, when he lost to now-President Bush. The newspaper's editorial board said McCain's record in the eight years since only reinforced its belief that the Arizona senator is the best suited for the presidency.

From a national exposure standpoint, Hunter would do well, and set him up for a possible run at the Senate or Gov. in California. Hunter is also doing pretty well in Nevada. I don’t think he has a chance at the Presidency, but think a brokered convention would help him tons. It may even set him up for a VP slot.

I don’t think it’s a big deal. We are all adults here. This is politics. Fred is a politician. He’s not God of Conservatism. But people want to follow a “Great Leader”. As I said before, we all have to get down from the tree house sooner or later.

If Fred endorses McCain, I will respect him for being loyal to a friend. Politically, he is an enemy. Other than that, he’s a fine wonderful human being. 10 years ago he might’ve been a shoe in for Presidency.

Welcome to FR. Now take your tent elsewhere. Fred will endorse no one, bet on it.

Ah, I see now. You got the Freed votes for Romney, and he won. But now you're backtracking on what Fred said after the primary, AND based on polls?

Tell me, if all of Romney's voters switched to Fred, he'd knock out Huck and probably McCain. So... I'm still waiting for the reciprocal vote.

So you object to him being nothing other than himself? That’s a bad thing? Do you not think we’d hear dismissal of him because he’s ‘acting’?

The more I’ve watched him, the more his actions and behavior demonstrate his genuine passion for the issues. He’s not in it because of passion for the office, but passion for his country and its foundation.

Fred’s the first candidate that I’ve wanted to vote FOR, rather than casting a vote against someone for decades.

Hey, Roy... Just as in “The Kid From Thompkinsville”, I think there’s going to be a comeback in South Carolina! Is Fred still in the league?

For any who might have missed your earlier pearls of wisdom on the Iowa Causus...

Fred Thompson may drop out (For any latecomers, it’s baloney) ^

To: cherry
Can and Will are not even close cousins.

Fred will not win...

Fred will not place or show...

Fred will be dropping out and endorsing John McCain in about 48 hours.

Deal with it now... or deal with in by the weekend.

It’s called being realistic about a candidate that has a track record of Flip-Flops, gun bans, and Liberalism ....

Keep the blinders on if you want , but I think Romney will win the nomination and destroy what’s left of the Conservative movement .

He left the Republican party in Mass decimated , left Mass with a permanant gun ban , $50 abortions , and socialized medicine .
Is this what you truly want ? Actions over words , his record speaks for itself ....enjoy !

Conservatives? We don't need any stinkin conservatives.

The base will get excited and go out and vote, blog, donate and volunteer for turd sandwich as the nominee.

Photobucket

NO NEED TO NOMINATE A CONSERVATIVE LIKE FRED.

After all, they are running against Giant Douche

Photobucket

The RNC thinks we will all rally around the liberal with the R next to their name. When they lose 48 states in a landslide maybe that will be the sledgehammer to the forehead they need to get the point before 2012. Nominate a conservative...or lose miserably.

In fact, a brokered convention would benefit three guys: Thompson, Romney and Hunter.

If there is a brokered convention, I'd bet that someone who didn't run for President will be the nominee. The support for the guys who are actually running isn't exactly overwhelming.
