Fred Thompson, making what could be his last stand in South Carolina, has inched up to third in the latest tracking poll leading up to Saturday's first-in-the-South primary. Thompson has 14 percent in the Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released this morning, sliding ahead of Mitt Romney, who slipped to 12 percent, even though some of the polling was done after he won the Michigan primary on Tuesday. Romney is chasing delegates in Nevada, whose caucuses are also Saturday, after saying he believes John McCain has South Carolina locked up. McCain held his lead in the new poll, with 29 percent, compared to 22 percent for Mike Huckabee. Ron Paul and Rudy Giuliani were tied at 5 percent, according to the poll. A Clemson University poll also gave McCain a 29 percent-22 percent edge over Huckabee, who won the leadoff caucuses in Iowa but hasn't finished better than third since. Thompson, the former US senator from Tennessee, plans to air a 60-second ad during today's evening news across South Carolina in which he talks up his conservative credentials in a folksy way designed to appeal to Southern voters. "I've been a conservative all my life," he says, then citing his "100 percent pro-life" record and asserting that Americans' fundamental rights come "from God, not government." McCain, meanwhile, picked up the endorsement today of the Charleston Post and Courier, which also endorsed him in 2000, when he lost to now-President Bush. The newspaper's editorial board said McCain's record in the eight years since only reinforced its belief that the Arizona senator is the best suited for the presidency.

Who are you supporting?
Judge Bork was nominated to the Supreme Court by Ronald Reagan and the Senate destroyed his nomination. Do you even know what you’re talking about?
I seriously have my doubts about your aversion to Romney.
Fred’s lifetime ACU is lower than FRIST and BAKER!
Do tell...
I’ve been praying for Fred all day to win and to keep on going!
Put a note on your refrigerator:
“I must take my meds, I must take my meds!”
I hope the Huck continues the decline. He is an embarrassment to all conservatives.
Hoping and praying for FRed.
National Right to Life gave Thompson a 33% rating in 2001-2002.
Not sure about all this, but I’m thinking the fanaticism for Thompson is based more on wishful thinking than on down to earth reality...
Such drivel.
They had the entire field to choose from, including Huckabee, and Fred was their choice.
If Life is the issue, Fred is the one.
O’Reilly hates Fred.
He gets his energy from the positive attitude of his supporters. Not from the naysayers. And we didn't ask him to run because he was a good speaker, but because he is the man for the job.
for what reason?
Think of it, Rachel, a whole year wasted on folks who don’t share your faith, and instead want a PROVEN conservative in the White House.
Fred IS the man.
I am sorry I mistakenly called you a newbie. You are still wrong about Fred. He is in this thing to win, nothing less. In the end Fred or Duncan are the only ones I can support this election cycle. Take it for what it is worth but this old warhorse, whose first vote was cast in 1964, is sick and tired of voting for psuedo Republicans, and we have a bunch of those in the current slate of candidates.
I think Fred did not show him the proper respect... O’Reilly must be worshipped, you know.
National Right to Life and dozens of life organizations across the country have endorsed Fred Thompson in this race
Well that is good to know. But if Fred doesn’t continue this race after tomorrow...it’s not the tragedy that some here insist on. It’s not over tomorrow anyway.
Every one of the Republican candidates are far superior to any of the dems. Are they perfect or as good as Fred? Probably Not! But we live in an evil world caught up in post modern times. Now I’ll shut up.
Romney’s just a serial liar.
Nothing new there.
If you'd started late,
if you were the only actual coservative in the field,
if you'd been rated at about 1 - 2%,
then 9,
then 12,
then 14 and third place.
Even if you barely made or barely missed third place in the primary....
What would you do?
