Former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson believes in our country and our laws. Thompson believes illegals are illegal, and should be sent home to apply to come into this country legally. Toleration of sanctuary cities must end. Companies hiring illegals should be heavily fined. And the fence between the United States and Mexico should be built immediately. As Thompson says, this is a matter of national security.
Thompson's views are in direct opposition to the bill which Sen. John McCain and Sen. Lindsey Graham, along with Sen. Ted Kennedy, tried to shove through the Senate -- and down the throats of Americans -- that would have given amnesty to the 12 million illegal immigrants in our country today. We tried amnesty before, and the problem has just mushroomed.
Sen. Thompson is also in direct opposition to former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who believes that children of illegal immigrants should be given scholarships to college, thus taking away places for our children's college education.
Illegal immigrants are financially draining our country's medical and educational systems. It's time to vote for someone who believes in our laws.
Marilyn Doremus, Aiken, S.C
well then, pray tell, who you are stumping for?
Fred is not a flip flopper. He is consistent. He was doing an analysis for Fox News, not suggesting he knew the solution, but recognizing something has to be done besides talking.
Fred is the only TRUE Conservative. The rest are pseudo conservatives that liberals could live with.
I guess I'm a "path to citizenship guy" too, just like Fred. I think all illegals must be sent back to the countries they came from. If they then want to apply for citizenship, just like anyone else, and get in line behind all those who have already applied, I say go for it. As Fred said:
"Or you're going to have to, in some way, work out a deal where they can have some aspirations of citizenship, but not make it so easy that it's unfair to the people waiting in line and abiding by the law."
I don't have a problem with that.
BAH! He was consistent with the Bush administration, that's what he was consistent with. Are you suggesting that because he was "doing an analysis", he was not speaking his mind?
I would say that the statements he gave then are closer to what he thinks than what he says now, after he got his finger in the wind.
I sure as hell do, especially when you tie it to his previous statements about not being able to deport them or drive them underground. In context, that seems to say that they will stay in place, in country.
it is also right in line with the mealy-mouthed generalizations by Bush and McCain- various vague semi-solutions that make amnesty *not* amnesty.
This is not inconsistent with his plan now, which puts pressure on employers and forces voluntary attrition. His current plan does not focus on fences (though it calls for them) and it does not require the government to count 12 million illegals or drive them underground. Instead, he came up with a solution that addresses the problems he noted on H&C, eliminate the benefits of illegal immigration so that they go home voluntarily.
His current plan does not call for deporting all 12 million or driving them underground, while at the same time being the strongest and most effective plan of any of the candidates. He is position now is consistent with his position then.
as·pi·ra·tion noun
1. strong desire, longing, or aim; ambition:
“Yeah that’s what Fred says now. A year ago he was pumping the Bush administration’s company line.”
Can you give me any links to articles or other stuff where he has said that?
Not arguing, just want to see info to that effect.
It certainly IS inconsistent, as his comments before excluded enforcement upon employers completely. He said that was not the solution.
Instead, he came up with a solution that addresses the problems he noted on H&C, eliminate the benefits of illegal immigration so that they go home voluntarily.
He didn't come up with anything. He has adjusted his position to the position held by the great majority of the American people- That being one of border control and enforcement against illegals and their employers, along with the removal of social services. Thereby, through enforcement and removal of attractions, the illegals would remove themselves by attrition.
But he did not arrive at that point until after the destruction wrought upon the Republicans by the citizens' uprising, making it "after the fact". Up until then, he was pretty much a "path to citizenship" guy.
See my #31.
He’s fading fast, he has to surge quick or it’s over IMO.
His stand in SC appears to be drawing weak support.
I just think he squandered all momentum he had in his preparation to run.
Better he run with almost no money to start with and stay in front of the camera while he had their attention.
The guy destroyed his own campaign for the most part.
I hope he proves me wrong, but I think it is over.
Fred has, early on, presented his detailed plan for dealing with illegal aliens already here. He believes in attrition through enforcement. I also believe this is the most viable solution. I don't think the "round them up and ship them out" supporters will ever get anywhere with the Congress or the American public.
Is it your intention to suggest that "aspirations of citizenship" is somehow different than "path to citizenship"? It is the same bloody thing.
No it isn’t.
“Huckabee is the ONLY candidate that signed a pledge to secure our borders and is now rated EXCELLENT by NumbersUSA.com”
If I didn’t know anything at all about Huck before he entered the race, I would still not vote for him just based on the crap he has spouted since he got in.
Let me guess... Another Ron Paul supporter.
