Death toll up to 17,400; overdue report describes PETA's deadliest year ever
WASHINGTON, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- An official report from People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), submitted nine months after a Virginia government agency's deadline, shows that the animal rights group put to death more than 97 percent of the dogs, cats, and other pets it took in for adoption in 2006. During that year, the well-known animal rights group managed to find adoptive homes for just 12 pets. The nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) is calling on PETA to either end its hypocritical angel-of-death program, or stop its senseless condemnation of Americans who believe it's perfectly ethical to use animals for food, clothing, and critical medical research.
Not counting animals PETA held only temporarily in its spay-neuter program, the organization took in 3,061 "companion animals" in 2006, of which it killed 2,981. According to Virginia's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), the average euthanasia rate for humane societies in the state was just 34.7 percent in 2006. PETA killed 97.4 percent of the animals it took in. The organization filed its 2006 report this month, nine months after the VDACS deadline of March 31, 2007.
"Pet lovers should be outraged," said CCF Director of Research David Martosko. "There are thousands of worthwhile animal shelters that deserve Americans' support. PETA is not one of them."
In courtroom testimony last year, a PETA manager acknowledged that her organization maintains a large walk-in freezer for storing dead animals, and that PETA contracts with a Virginia cremation service to dispose of the bodies. In that trial, two PETA employees were convicted of dumping dead animals in a rural North Carolina trash dumpster.
Today in Southampton County, Virginia, another PETA employee will face felony charges in a dog-napping case. Andrea Florence Benoit Harris was arrested in late 2006 for allegedly abducting a hunting dog and attempting to transport it to PETA's Norfolk headquarters.
"PETA raised over $30 million last year," Martosko added, "and it's using that money to kill the only flesh-and-blood animals its employees actually see. The scale of PETA's hypocrisy is simply staggering."

Something to look at, if you are involved in local shelters, is to approach the state legislature about creating a special license plates, with proceeds going to state, volunteer run shelters.
Many states have done this for the HSUS, but legislators in Florida recently voted to give these funds to local shelters instead of the HSUS, so that these proceeds can go for local projects.
Contact your state legislator and see if he/she would be able to sponsor a bill to do this. It’s common and can raise some pretty significant funds for your shelter.
Congratulations, maybe they are now qualified to take over the countries health care systems as well now.
Good news is that in my homestate, CT, there is a special license plate that is promoted to do just that. I will do a online search for information.
I understand that PETA is so picky about who they will allow to “adopt” that virtually everyone fails their test. They are typical liberals in that they have decided that it is better to kill the animal than allow it to live a life that doesn’t measure up to PETA’s “quality of life” standards.
Back with a URL of CT’s state vanity licence plate about the need to care for pets.

Typical liberate control freaks. PETA should simply get out of the animal adoption business, period. =^..^=
As we speak, the Virginia General Assembly is in session. HSUS has hired a Richmond law firm to have FOUR lobbyists roaming the halls trying to stuff bills down the Legislators’ throats.
They want a statewide ban on tethering dogs, so only those rich enough to have a fence will be able to own a pet dog. They want information of who owns animals vaccinated for rabies, to be available to the general public.
They want “volunteer” (read that PETA plant) humane investigators with sweeping power.
Animal rights is NEVER about what is best for the animals, or for the owners who love them.
If you live in Virginia, please contact your representative to oppose:
HB 217 Tethering of animals; makes certain acts associated therewith Class 3 misdemeanor.
HB 538 Commercial dog breeding operations; definition, penalty.
HB 673 Animals; clarifies several standards of welfare.
HB 690 Companion animals; commercial breeding, penalty.
HB 691 Animal control officers; inspection of breeding facilities.
HB538, HB690 and HB691 are particularly pernicious HSUS bills.
We should contact one of these programs and report there are several pets being kept at a facility that are being killed. Can they arrange a Rescue? Then just supply the address.
Uh-oh. Ethical dilemma: if the PETAphiles donate $$ to Animal Planet or some of their programs, what shall they do???
;-)
I could be wrong, but it is my understanding that peta does not believe in people having pets. They kill them when they get them so it may well be true.
My question is: Do the people who are employed by peta who work in the pet killing fields of peta, do any of them have pets? I mean besides pet rocks?
Holy smokes - my unspayed female dog must be a slacker, cause she hasn’t produced anything.
At $1000 a pop for her breed (Red Golden Retriever), that would be $67,000,000 to me.
I am going to go beat that B&TCH.
This (Darnright’s post) is what the HSUS spends its money on. Paying for lobbiests and campaigns to eventually end hunting, fishing, wearing fur, eating meat, dog/cat breeding, the use of rats for medical research, and to put small farmers out of business, etc. This is the ultimate goal.
While paying outrageous salaries and perks to the board members/officers, they spend nothing on spay/neuter/feeding/housing programs for domestic animals, although most people who send them money thinks this is where it is going. A lot of freepers defend the HSUS, despite all the info out there about its agenda.
PETA is smalltime compared to the HSUS. Despite the HSUS’s efforts to portray the organization as an “animal welfare” group, the truth is coming out. They are an animal rights organization with very radical leadership.
Good response. Will post more in detail tomorrow. Good night.
thanks. my eyes just pissed blood
