Death toll up to 17,400; overdue report describes PETA's deadliest year ever
WASHINGTON, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- An official report from People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), submitted nine months after a Virginia government agency's deadline, shows that the animal rights group put to death more than 97 percent of the dogs, cats, and other pets it took in for adoption in 2006. During that year, the well-known animal rights group managed to find adoptive homes for just 12 pets. The nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) is calling on PETA to either end its hypocritical angel-of-death program, or stop its senseless condemnation of Americans who believe it's perfectly ethical to use animals for food, clothing, and critical medical research.
Not counting animals PETA held only temporarily in its spay-neuter program, the organization took in 3,061 "companion animals" in 2006, of which it killed 2,981. According to Virginia's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), the average euthanasia rate for humane societies in the state was just 34.7 percent in 2006. PETA killed 97.4 percent of the animals it took in. The organization filed its 2006 report this month, nine months after the VDACS deadline of March 31, 2007.
"Pet lovers should be outraged," said CCF Director of Research David Martosko. "There are thousands of worthwhile animal shelters that deserve Americans' support. PETA is not one of them."
In courtroom testimony last year, a PETA manager acknowledged that her organization maintains a large walk-in freezer for storing dead animals, and that PETA contracts with a Virginia cremation service to dispose of the bodies. In that trial, two PETA employees were convicted of dumping dead animals in a rural North Carolina trash dumpster.
Today in Southampton County, Virginia, another PETA employee will face felony charges in a dog-napping case. Andrea Florence Benoit Harris was arrested in late 2006 for allegedly abducting a hunting dog and attempting to transport it to PETA's Norfolk headquarters.
"PETA raised over $30 million last year," Martosko added, "and it's using that money to kill the only flesh-and-blood animals its employees actually see. The scale of PETA's hypocrisy is simply staggering."

Paging “Faces of Death V” film crew...
Thanks for this news article. =^..^=
2000 dogs and 3000 cats are born every hour in the United States compared to 415 humans.
15 million healthy, loving friendly cats, dogs, kittens and puppies will face death as a form of animal control.
There are not enough homes for all the dogs and kittens born from pets whose owners simply did not spay or neuter them.
One unspayed female dog, her mate, and their offspring can produce up to 67,000 dogs on just 6 years.
One unspayed female cat, her mate and all of their offspring can produce 370,092 in just 7 years.
So in one year they killed approximately two to three times the number of animals Michael Vick has killed in his entire life. When do the PETA people go to prison?
Pardon me... 20 to 30 times the number of animals Michael Vick has killed....
Commies have no more regard for animals than they do people. The bottom line for Communism is the extinction of life. It is the devil thumbing his nose at God’s creation.
I also volunteer every week...I trap ferals and TNR plus other things for them. I can’t believe how irresponsible, cheap or ignorant people are to the problem.
The head of PETA...if I remember correctly...spends a heck of a lot on travel expenses. I’d bet she is on the road 250 days out of the year...and every stop is at a $250 hotel room, with a rental car. Someone should tail her, and portray the leadership as fools...which they really are.
I do socialization of cats/kittens. When the shelter does open adoption hours every Saturday, we not only adopt out the adults, but also we adopt older kittens. Plus during the season the kittens are born people volunteer to do foster home care of the kittens as well. Heard all the sad stories and at times will do a special “rescue” of a kitten(s)/cats that get abandoned at the front door.
I'm kinda busy... how 'bout you? :)
Culture of death!
Let’s see now, PETA raises approximately $30 million annually, and the Humane Society of the U.S $119 million. Then there are dozens of other AR organizations raising millions.
The people most likely to send these frauds money believe they are somehow addressing/solving the animal population problem.
These organizations don’t spay/neuter/feed or house (except in rare “token” cases, usually high profile ones where animals are props to raise more money) animals.
That kind of money could finance free spay/neuter clinics nationwide.Especially considering how local animal shelters are struggling to keep their doors open, depending on donations from folks. Of course so many of these well-meaning donors send their money to the big AR organizations, sucking it right away from where it is needed, in the local shelters.
This is the BIG story, the one that people concerned about animal overpopulation need to be emphasizing.
I agree, it is the work of the local AR organizations, doing the most important work in the trenches really is where it is at, not the large national AR. I belong to a local AR organization. What I would like to see is both working together and the larger organizations helping out the smaller ones in the area of spay/neuter efforts. =^..^=
Second it!
