Over the past several days, the only real movement in South Carolinas Republican Presidential Primary has been a four-point gain for Fred Thompson and a five-point decline for Mike Huckabee.
The big winner from that trade-off is John McCain.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows McCain at 28%, Huckabee at 19%, Mitt Romney at 17%, and Fred Thompson at 16%. Rudy Giuliani and Ron Paul are tied with 5% support. Giuliani is betting his entire campaign on a strong showing in Florida, where he is now tied for the lead with three others....

Assuming that the individual is really a conservative?
That's important. That assumption narrows it down to McCain and Huckabee. Neither are conservatives except with respect to a few issues. Of the two, though, Huckster is more likely to have supporters who've latched onto him in the mistaken belief that he IS a true conservative.
I could see some folks just hearing "Christian, pro-life, fair-tax" and thinking he's a real conservative without bothering to look at his lefty positions on immigration, global warming, taxation, pardons, etc.

We agree that the conservatives are latched onto McCain & Huck. We are killing ourselves with this division between so many candidates. The in-fighting among conservatives is allowing social liberals to take the lead.
