Over the past several days, the only real movement in South Carolina’s Republican Presidential Primary has been a four-point gain for Fred Thompson and a five-point decline for Mike Huckabee.

The big winner from that trade-off is John McCain.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows McCain at 28%, Huckabee at 19%, Mitt Romney at 17%, and Fred Thompson at 16%. Rudy Giuliani and Ron Paul are tied with 5% support. Giuliani is betting his entire campaign on a strong showing in Florida, where he is now tied for the lead with three others....

My apologies to all. My post was meant to be a moment of celebration, not solicitation.

"Which candidate do you think most likely to have support that otherwise would logically gravitate to Thompson if they really could see the conservative credentials of their candidate versus Thompson?"

-----

Assuming that the individual is really a conservative?

That's important. That assumption narrows it down to McCain and Huckabee. Neither are conservatives except with respect to a few issues. Of the two, though, Huckster is more likely to have supporters who've latched onto him in the mistaken belief that he IS a true conservative.

I could see some folks just hearing "Christian, pro-life, fair-tax" and thinking he's a real conservative without bothering to look at his lefty positions on immigration, global warming, taxation, pardons, etc.

Thanks, Hank.

We agree that the conservatives are latched onto McCain & Huck. We are killing ourselves with this division between so many candidates. The in-fighting among conservatives is allowing social liberals to take the lead.
