New Louisiana Gov. Pledges to Fight Corruption

BATON ROUGE, La. — Republican Bobby Jindal, the nation's first Indian-American governor, was sworn in Monday in Louisiana and moved quickly to make good on a campaign promise to clean up the corrupt image of this hurricane-battered state.

"We have the opportunity - born of tragedy but embraced still the same - to make right decades of failure in government," Jindal said in his inaugural speech, referring to hurricanes Katrina and Rita of 2005.

Jindal, a former congressman, became Louisiana's first nonwhite governor since Reconstruction. He took the oath from the state Supreme Court's chief justice, Pascal Calogero. Jindal's wife Supriya held the Bible.

He said he will call a special legislative session February 10 to address the state's image as a haven for cronyism and self-serving politicians. In his speech, he made numerous references to a "new Louisiana" and a "new beginning" for the state.

Was there a nonwhite governor before Reconstruction?

Don't think so.

Somebody correct me on this, but aren’t Indians considered Caucasian? Doesn’t this make labels based on pigmentation irrelevant?

The previous nonwhite governor was P.B.S. Pinchback, who served during reconstruction. I would need to look up the details, but I believe he was mostly a figurehead backed by the carpetbag legislature during the time most whites were denied the vote.

Indian, Persian, Saxons and Germans all have significant portions of Aryan genes in them.

P.B.S. Pinchback held the office of Governor for a month or so after the impeachment of Governor Henry Warmoth in about 1873.

I agree, but we are counting on it. He got over half the LA vote that should send some message to the good ole boys that we are sick and tired of business as usual! Pray for Bobby!
