HUDSONVILLE -- Presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Duncan Hunter, and former candidate Sam Brownback made an appearance in Hudsonville Friday night.
They were the focus of the Ottawa County Republican Party's 2008 Lincoln Day dinner at the Pinnacle Center.
About 400 people showed up at the event to hear the men speak.........
Congressman Duncan Hunter has not received as much as attention as the so-called frontrunners of the election. But he soldiers on with a consistent message that includes Michigan.
"In Michigan, this is a state where we had the arsenal of democracy. This is where we built a bomber aircraft every 60 minutes in World War II. This is where we built tens of thousands of tanks. I want to bring back that arsenal of democracy because I think it's important," he told 24 Hour News 8.
When the event was over, some of the Republican faithful may have made up their minds or been further convinced of their original decision.
And it isn't over yet.
McCain and Mike Huckabee, as well as Romney and Hunter, will be campaigning throughout the next few days in the state in advance of the Michigan primary on January 15.
24 Hour News 8 will cover all of the candidates' stops in West Michigan.

MI/ duncan hunter pings!!
Saw Hunter, Romney, on Saturday in person very close-up at the “Defending The American Dream Summit” in MI and IIRC there also one other event here the past weekend that they both appeared, hmmm. Romney and Hunter both spoke off-the-cuff, never looking at a note and both very charming. McCain was also at the summit, read his text rarely looking up, and was booed on three topics, heckled on two.
I have the feeling that Romney and Hunter are better friends than the public really knows...
(Hunter also introduced his son to the audience, Marine Captain Duncan Jr. who shook my hand rather sturdy on the way out the aisle, as one would expect from a Marine running for Congress.)
B4DH.
Thanks for that first hand report, quantim. I’ve never seen anyone better on the stump than Hunter. He speaks with authority and knowledge and knows his stuff. I’m glad there were no weak wristed hand shakers! Romney could grow on me, I think he’s learning as he goes. I hope McCain was embarrassed!
See post 4
Nice report. I’d be proud to shake the hand of Hunter’s son also.
How awesome for you to get to see THE man in person!!!
Isn't he wonderful?!?!
Hunter also introduced his son to the audience, Marine Captain Duncan Jr. who shook my hand rather sturdy on the way out the aisle, as one would expect from a Marine running for Congress.
Exciting! Good to hear Hunter has the Marines on duty there in MI. What was your take on Hunter's reception?
McCain...and was booed on three topics, heckled on two.
LOL...er...ahem...oh...heck...ROTFLOL!!!
Hunter, Hunter and Romney bump
Thanks for the thread and the report!
Romney clearly had the advantage as a public speaker among all the speakers and the energy level was also the highest, no doubt Romney had his game on for the hometown crowd.
Hunter was the last of the candidates to speak and did not do so as long. Quipped that McCain took all the time...
Hunter hit his highest moment for sponsoring the bill on building the fence and claims he’ll have it done in six months, crowd roars. He said, that McCain said “if there was a 20’ foot fence then there’s a 21’ foot ladder.” Hunter explains double wall fence concept and goes on right away about that other element (border guards, without actually saying it) and he would pardon the border agents his first day and audience went raucous!
Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox was also excellent, geez did he go after Cinton and Granholm.
McCain was clearly the goat of the whole conference, but also got his fair share of applause, ALL of it came from support of Iraq, but did get booed for trashing Rumsfeld (Bush backers, presumably), global warming, border control, immigration/amnesty, flip-flopped on supporting Bush tax cuts, and a nonsense rant on worker training (sounding like Granholm).
Are you serious?
Thank you again for sharing your experience with us. We are starved for news about Hunter on the campaign trail.
I must admit I wouldn't mind staring at Romney for a while, although I generally like the manly man look of a HUNTER! ;*)
BTTT
“He said, that McCain said if there was a 20 foot fence then theres a 21 foot ladder.
That’s right! I’d forgotten that. Gotta find that quote.
Next time Congressman Hunter crashes a Live TV news studio set, I hope he "baptizes" some of those liberal talking heads (like Chris Matthews) who exclude coverage of him, with a cup of that blasting hot Duncan Donut coffee he is holding!!! LOL!
Romney could grow on me
Are you serious?

Lol! Not really. In comparison to McCain, Huck, Rudy, I might be convinced. The ol’ lesser of, you know, if it came to that. I pray it doesn’t. And I don’t pray for much.
LOL....me too!
OK...you had me worried :^)
