LONDON: A plot by al-Qa'ida operatives to kill the Queen during a state visit to Uganda less than two months ago was foiled by security services.
The terrorists had planned to hide inside two broadcast vans owned by the Ugandan Broadcasting Corporation and then set off bombs during the Queen's visit to Kampala last November.
London's Sunday Express reported the vans were seized after a tip-off from intelligence agents.
As a result, the broadcaster was unable to transmit live pictures of key summit events, including the Queen's historic address to the Ugandan parliament on November 22.
The Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla travelled to the east African nation's capital for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, attended by more than 30 world leaders. Australia was represented by Richard Alston, the High Commissioner to London.
Uganda's Internal Affairs Minister Ruhakana Rugunda said several suspected terrorists were arrested.
"We received information that a terrorist group linked to al-Qa'ida, the Allied Democratic Forces, was planning to carry out terrorist activities at the Commonwealth meeting," he told the Sunday Express.
"The security services in Uganda neutralised these threats."
Dr Rugunda refused to comment on the exact nature of the intended attacks or reports that Ugandan armed forces had seized a speedboat loaded with arms and homemade bombs.
A number of suspected ADF guerillas aboard the boat on Lake Victoria are believed to have been taken into custody, the Sunday Express reported.

The Queen is Head of the Church of England.
This is akin is trying to assassinate the Pope.
Although I’m not Christian, I’ve just about had it with this worldwide assault on Christianity.
Indeed she is - one of her titles is ‘Defender of the Faith’.
There is definitely an element of an attack on that faith in any attack on her by adherents of another.

I gave myself a headache again.
As a symbol, she's a powerful one - the Head of State of 16 nations, many of which are allies in the War on Terror.
I think Muslims are very very lucky that this plot was uncovered and prevented from occurring.
I don’t even want to THINK about how angry the Brits would be if it had succeeded.
If there is one single act that would absolutely blow away the lockstep PC multiculturism infesting the UK today, that would be it.

To turn the subject a bit, I have a small set of beautiful dinner plates that I once found in a junk shop in Maine and bought. They are German, with a coat of arms, and have the motto “Ich dienst”—which I believe means “I serve.”
I wonder if they have any connection with the Queen’s Hanoverian background? I don’t have them here or I’d have another look at them to see.

Ten years ago, I would have said that killing the Queen would fill the British with steel and they’d hunt her attackers to the ends of the Earth, making war on those that stood in their way. Now...I’m not so sure. A significant portion of Britain would probably, if not celebrate, then say “well, we don’t need royalty anyway”.
The IRA miscalculated the effect the assassination of Lord Mountbatten would have on the British people.
