Huckabee Defends Joke About Fred
cbsnews ^ | 01/12/08 | Joy Lin

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Asked about Fred Thompson’s “hatchet” attack against him at Thursday's Republican debate, Mike Huckabee joked to Joe Scarborough that he thought “Fred needs some Metamucil. I think it would help a lot if he gets some. You know, he was in a bad mood last night.”

On the bus with reporters on Route 96 in Michigan from Lansing to Grand Rapids, Huckabee explained his Metamucil comment saying, “You have to understand the context of the show….It’s not quite as irreverent as Imus…not quite Stephen Colbert but it’s serious topics with an edge.”

“I really do believe if people can’t have some sense of humor as they approach this stuff, then it causes everybody to be so locked down and consultant driven that their campaigns become so boring because all they’re going to do is give this robotic answer to everything that’s very carefully scripted. I promise you, you won’t have moments like this,” Huckabee said, gesturing to the handful of reporters that had gathered around him for an on-the-record conversation that would last about 40 minutes.

“Does Romney do these?” Huckabee asked the reporters. No, replied one. Neither does Thompson, said another.

“If I thought I couldn’t be a human being. That I gotta wait till six handlers tell me what I can and can’t say and I have to read it, you know, it’s not worth it.”

It’s not what any of them say. Look at what they have or have not done.

“If christians don’t vote for this guy, then we and our country deserve whatever we get.”

If Christians don’t wake up and see this guy for the wolf in sheeps clothing he really is and keep supporting this guy, then you deserve whatever you get...this Christian will not take responsibility for that big error in judgment.
Geesh.

I once shared an elevator with Ted Kennedy. He was quite charming. Glad I don’t live in Massachusetts or I guess in your eyes I’d be obligated to vote for him.

FRED: Mike Huckabee seems to be for amnesty for illegal immigrants.
MIKE: “Fred needs some Metamucil. I think it would help a lot if he gets some. You know, he was in a bad mood last night.”
FRED: Mick Huckabee wants to close Guantanmo and bring those enemy combatants here to the US.
MIKE: “Fred needs some Metamucil. I think it would help a lot if he gets some. You know, he was in a bad mood last night.”
FRED: Mike Huckabee says he is for tax cuts, but raised taxes many times as a Governor.
MIKE: “Fred needs some Metamucil. I think it would help a lot if he gets some. You know, he was in a bad mood last night.”
FRED: Mike Huckabee was endorsed by the New Hampshire NEA because he opposes vouchers.
MIKE: “Fred needs some Metamucil. I think it would help a lot if he gets some. You know, he was in a bad mood last night.”
FRED: Mike Huckabee says the Bush administration has a bunker mentality in defense of our country against terrorists.
MIKE: “Fred needs some Metamucil. I think it would help a lot if he gets some. You know, he was in a bad mood last night.”

It is obvious that Huckabee can not defend his record and that Fred Thompson is right!

“GO HUCK. I’v never seen a bigger bunch of babies than some of the fredheads around here. Fred goes in with the hatchet and Huckabee laughs it off and says “take some metamucil fred”. Get a life guys.”

Agreed. The hypocrisy on this forum knows no bounds. They are VERY selective in their outrage. Kinda reminds me of...Liberal Democrats!

I live in Tennessee. My children and grandchildren are grads of UofM. by your logic, I would be voting for Fred. I never said that anyone is obligated to vote for anyone. That wasn’t my point, and you know it.

I am no Huck fan by a longshot, but you are right. It was just political jarring and pretty harmless as far as that goes.

It seems a lot of Fredheads have a distaste of Christians ever since Focus on the Family leader had the audicity to mention that Fred didn't darken the door of a church, and hadn't in a long time.

Fred didn't handle that very well, and futher wedged himself from mainstream popcorn Christians when he started saying things like "I don't wear my faith" etc....

I myself take the issue very seriously, though I see myself as a step or two above the average "popcorn" Christian (thus why I support Duncan Hunter)... IMHO.. Fred Thompson didn't care to reach out to me and other Christians whatsoever, and that was unacceptable.. what a shame, cause with a minimum of effort, he could of made some great allies. I think Fred would of been wise to not have "dissed" Christian voters, because whether they (FR member included) like it or not, the Christian right is a large chunk of voters that can sway elections even to this day. Huck can attest to that, you don't spit in the wind. I just wish Huck had have the track record Fred has vote wise.

Lessons learned... sometimes the hard way...

Just my two cents...

“I’d have a very hard time voting Republican this year if Mike Huckabee is anywhere on the ticket.”

Then you had better get ready not to vote Republican. Things are shaping up for it to be a McCain/Huckabee ticket in November.

Those cards help illegal aliens send billions of dollars back home, helping to prop up the corrupt Mexican government.

$20,000,000,000 in '06, and no doubt a much higher amount last year. According to US government information Mexico's annual budget is around $185-200 billion in US dollars, so the 20+ billion dollars sent home by illegals each year plays a major role in the Mexican economy.

BTW, Mexico has more billionaires than any other Latin American nation except Brazil, including the richest of all Latin Americans, and the richest Mexicans pay a total of 15% of their reported income in taxes. Those rich Mexicans don't want to be taxed to pay for any aid to the poor wretched rabble in their own country, they want Americans to help pay for what very little it may be by way of the US dollars that illegals take from our economy and send into the Mexican economy. I'm no economist as anyone can plainly see, but even a fiscal dummy such as I am can see that this situation is not beneficial to American taxpayers or to the American economy in general.

If I'm wrong someone please set me straight, I have already admitted that I'm a total dummy when it comes to complicated economic matters.

Other than throwing out a few vague platitudes, Huckabee still has not refuted the facts presented to him at the debate.

Huckabee had his chance to respond face to face and couldn't hack it. He was knocked down and bloodied. He now just snarks at a safe distance.

You are fooled. If Christians do not wake up and see that NO politician is going to save this country from itself, we are lost.

Starts with Christian people and other good people of other faiths going back to what made America great for all people, enough to make them come here. It wasn’t government programs. It was the promise to worship, make a better life for themselves and, realize their full potential. It wasn’t about handouts, it was about FREEDOM.

No man, even the Huckster, is better than the rest because they are in it for themselves. You want charity? Stick to conservative values and reject liberal ones because they will always keep the human spirit down and needy.

That would be very unwise of McCain. IF McCain is fortunate enough to get the nomination he really needs to have Duncan Hunter as his running mate.

Folks, you need to be focusing on what Mike said here, not the other parts. If you want scripted perfection, then by all means don’t support Huckabee.

Gasp, the man is an imperfect human being....the horror!! Heaven forbid we have anything but a robot running for office! Oh, sorry, I forgot. Fred can say anything and it is OK, as can his supporters here. Fred doesn’t have to be a robot.

“I think Fred would of been wise to not have “dissed” Christian voters”

I find that interesting. I am a Christian voter and have never felt dissed by Fred. I have however been offended by the way Huck is campaigning...touting his Christian creds but acting in a way far more aligned with the corrupt Clintons from Arkansas. When you obfuscate records, to me thats thats outright lying.
Freds record stands on his pro-life commitment, and his record is something that Huck has yet to confront...Why? he cannot.

I haven’t decided if I’m a Fred supporter. The only thing I’ve decided for sure is that I will not support Huckabee.

I agree.

Since when is pointing out Mike Huckabee's record an attack on him? Mike refuted none of it and could only respond with a smart slur. It was not even funny.

Then why bring it up, unless it’s a feeble attempt to guilt people who liked Huckabee’s music back then into supporting him now? If that wasn’t your intent, then your post was a complete non sequitor, since Huckabee’s actions years ago at the FReeper ball are completely irrelevant to yesterday’s thin-skinned comment and the fact that Huckabee can’t refute the charges, so like a Dem, he attacks the messenger instead, and in an ugly, uncalled for personal way.

No one is obligated to support a candidate based on a personal relationship, and it is not wrong or unseemly in the least for Freepers to have applauded Huckabee for what he did then, while disliking what he’s doing now. Freepers who thought his playing at the ball was positively wonderful have no obligation whatsoever to think that everything else he ever does is wonderful, too. Especially when the self proclaimed “Christian leader” is acting like a horse’s *ss.
