"migrants are some of the world's most vulnerable people"

These people were vulnerable before they even thought about migrating, and if the Catholic Church is so concerned about their plight they should be working to improve their lives in their country of origin.

Sorry, but with this the RCC announces that it is an enemy of the United States.

Soon, you will see a bunch of Freepers claiming "these people don't speak for the Catholic Church, yadda yadda."

Have you ever seen any Priests, Bishops, or the Pope condemning the illegal migration Mexicans and Central Americans? When I lived in an Opus Dei house years ago, the five priests that lived in the adjacent rectory were all gaga about the Mexicans/Central Americans "reinvigorating" the Church.

Of course, I have no use for hucksters of the cloth, whether they call themselves Priests, Ministers, Rabbis, or Imams.

I can understand feeding the hungry. If we had a border though and kept them out, this wouldn’t be an issue. Churches could still minister in Mexico.

The RCC should be held responsible as aiding and abetting these lawbreakers. They should also be held as the sponsors of those already here and should be financially responsible for the welfare of the illegals instead of charging that to us non-Catholic taxpayers.

Huckabee, McCain, and Bush have all said the same things as this article says.

Go ahead and feed them in the shelters, just on the other side of the wall. Feeding the poor is good. Helping them invade is not.

I’m a staunch defender of the Catholic FAITH, but I can’t and won’t defend the activities of SOME of those who operate under its ancient auspices.

This would include the queer priests and nuns who sadly reach to very high levels in the Catholic heirarchy, as well as those fomenting socialism and openly anti-American activities such as those described here.

Pope decries world with luxury for few and poverty for many

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday criticized a world with luxury for a few and poverty for many and called for moderate lifestyles to ensure fair distribution of wealth amid a scramble for natural resources.

“One cannot say that globalization is synonymous with world order _ it’s the opposite,’’ Benedict said in his homily in St. Peter’s Basilica to mark the Catholic feast day of the Epiphany.

“The conflicts for economic supremacy, and the scramble for energy and water resources and raw materials render difficult the work of all those who strive to construct a more just and united world,’’ Benedict said.

“We need a greater hope, which allows us to prefer the common good of all to the luxury of few and the poverty of many,’’ the pontiff said.

“If true hope is lacking, you search for happiness in intoxication, in the superfluous, in excess, and you ruin yourself and the world,’’ he said. “Moderation is not only an ascetic rule, but also a way of salvation for humanity.’’

“By now it is obvious that only by adopting a sober lifestyle, accompanied by a serious commitment to a fair distribution of wealth, will it be possible to install a just and sustainable model of development,’’ Benedict said.

Migration is a human right...

I wonder if they'd feel the same if they were migrating to the Vatican.

In 2006, it was estimated that well over 50% of Somali immigrant adults were still unemployed, even after 5 years from their arrival in Lewiston as reported by William Finnegan of New Yorker Magazine.

"Unemployment in the Somali community is estimated at fifty per cent. Alex Nicolaou, an employment counsellor for Catholic Charities in Maine, who works mainly with Somalis."

That is an example of typically sloppy, biased reporting. The so-called “Vatican sanction” is not church approval as the story implies. It refers to a papal blessing certificate displayed on the wall, but just about anybody can get one of those. My mother-in-law has one. Her mother had one. We got one for our choir director. It has nothing to do with enabling migrants to enter the US illegally. It has everything to do with the shelter’s taking in homeless people and caring for them in Christian charity. To be sure we have our share of leftwingers, both lay and religious, who make perfect interviewees and give the false impression that they represent the Church. They only represent themselves. I consider them to be an embarrassment.

Papal teaching is that countries have a right to control their borders, illegal immigrants can be sent home or to another country if it is not feasible to help them become legal and that the most lasting and best solution is to have the sending countrie clean up their own act so that the reason to emigrate is removed.

The fact is that some Catholics support illegal immigration, but surely an equal or larger number do not.

Some Protestants oppose illegal immigration, but the leading backers of normalizing vast illegal immigration, Mike Huckabee and John McCain, are self described Baptists.

What is really incredible is that pro-illegal Presidential candidates, McCain, Huckabee, Obama, Clinton seem to be doing so well in a country that professes to oppose illegal immigration.

The Mexican government is a secular republic with a history of hostility to the Church. It is also the result of interference from, and the spread of socialist ideology by, their northern neighbor... the US.
