JERUSALEM President Bush had tears in his eyes during an hour-long tour of Israel's Holocaust memorial Friday and told Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that the U.S. should have bombed Auschwitz to halt the killing, the memorial's chairman said.
Bush emerged from a tour of the Yad Vashem memorial calling it a "sobering reminder" that evil must be resisted, and praising victims for not losing their faith.

Bush was visibly moved as he toured the site, said Yad Vashem's chairman, Avner Shalev.
"Twice, I saw tears well up in his eyes," Shalev said.
At one point, Bush viewed aerial photos of the Auschwitz camp taken during the war by U.S. forces and called Rice over to discuss why the American government had decided against bombing the site, Shalev said.
The Allies had detailed reports about Auschwitz during the war from Polish partisans and escaped prisoners. But they chose not to bomb the camp, the rail lines leading to it, or any of the other Nazi death camps, preferring instead to focus all resources on the broader military effort, a decision that became the subject of intense controversy years later.

"We should have bombed it," Bush said, according to Shalev.
In the memorial's visitors' book, the president wrote simply, "God bless Israel, George Bush."

"I was most impressed that people in the face of horror and evil would not forsake their God. In the face of unspeakable crimes against humanity, brave souls young and old stood strong for what they believe," Bush said.
"I wish as many people as possible would come to this place. It is a sobering reminder that evil exists, and a call that when evil exists we must resist it," he said.

President Bush is correct and a good man. He should listen to his own words. However this is contradicted by the US support for the "palestinian" islamofascists. Yesterday President Bush sounded like (pardon me...) Carter, when urging Israel to stop the "occupation" and give the Palis a "right to return." What is going on in this man's head? I can't figure it out. I fear it's the StateDepartment pressuring Bush to pander to the Arabs.
I couldn’t say whether bombing it would have prevented the atrocities. Probably couldn’t have made it worse.
Bush is a good man. But, he did get Putin wrong. We are all going to pay a price as Putin continues to consolidate power.
As much as I dislike the Huckster, he was right in last nights debate when he straightened out Ron Paul on why we should support and help defend Israel.
i don’t think the allied powers were even aware of their exixtence until they marched up to the gates to liberate them.
Its much easier to say ‘we should have bombed it’ almost 70 years after the fact, when you don’t have to consider logistics related to it.
The same has been suggested in passing about POW camps in the Pacific...again its easy with time and distance from the event avoiding the logistics involved, and the question about how reliable the intelligence was ‘in the moment’ without the 20/20 hindsight.
Condi Rice and the folks at the state departmant are a disgrace to this country. Condi Rice is nothing but another token liberal Jimmy Carter disciple in sheeps clothing. It is hard to believe I once thought of he her as a legit Presidental candidate.

Lot’s of tears in the news lately-

Who’s next ?
Hillary: “See men cry and it’s ok...it’s not fair...snivel...poor me...double standard!!...:
He wasn’t crying for himself. There is a difference. Bush is a good unselfish man.
I one drops bombs on a POW camp, doesn’t one tend to kill the POW’s?
I think you’re right. It was an impulsive statement by Bush.
The German propaganda machine would have said we were bombing POW camps, pictures would have been on the internet within minutes, the United Nations would have held an emergency Security Council session, France would have sided with Red China and demanded war crime trials for Ameirican military and government leaders. It could have turned the American public against the war just as fast as Walter Cronkite did during the Vietnam war.
Oh excuse me, I got carried away and lost perspective of time.........
If Hitlery wins in November, we’ll all be crying.
The allies knew through intelligence and Polish escapees of Auschwitz and the Holocaust at least since 1942.
The industrial complex Monowitz of Auschwitz (also called Auschwitz III) was bombed by US bombers. The USA also had aerial photos since 1944 of Auschwitz with piles of burning corpses sending a huge smoke cloud.
Not correct. See my post above...

Maybe, but I’m TIRED of grown men crying! If you cry because a close family member dies...well, I’ll make an exception - IF you try to keep it private.
Otherwise, turn off the spigot!
I agree.
If Hitlery wins in November, well all be crying.

Thinking of the possibility just brought a tear to my eye.
We have one in our midst. Running for the presidency.

It would have been impossible for the allies to bomb the camps since we could only carpet bomb in those days and would have killed more of them then germans.
Radar was not invented yet, we could not fly to find them almost until the end of the war.
German anti-air defense was excellent and we lost a lot of aircraft in the mission we did fly.
There were lot bigger issues, like winning the war that needed to be focused on.
There was a great moving about how the pope at the time was using his powers to protect and help the jews while, the jews did nothing to help each other. Gregory Peck I believe even won an Oscar for he role.
To say we needed to bomb, yea, well, maybe we should have but we could not have an never puts into prospective what was going on with a European war, russian and, our war in the Pacific.
Seems every special interest group always wants to re-hash the past. Americans freed then fed the jews in the camps and still, 50 years later, millions and billions of our tax dollars are used to and for them.
