Fred Thompson and Duncan Hunter are the only real conservatives. Would love a Thompson/Hunter ticket, but Fred gets my support and my vote on January 29th!
Me too. If the R party no longer represents conservative principles, we’re no better than the DUmmies who will vote for a ‘rat, just because there’s a “D” next to the name. When did the party become more important than the principles for which it once stood, which is why I would suppose most of us supported it? That’s as bad as politicians like the Clintons who will be anything it takes to get elected.
What would you suggest we should do if the nominee is Rudy or McCain or Romney? Vote for Hillary (or Obama)? Stay home? Write in a name? Hope a third party candidate emerges?
Well if you don't have #2, then #1 goes with the rest of them.
The second amendment is the litmus test for all candidates in my opinion. If the candidate doesn’t trust me with a firearm, I can’t trust him with a pen.
He supports banning semi-automatic firearms, and uses the propaganda term "assault weapon", when referring to them.
He also wants to ban weapons of 'Extraordinary Lethality'.
Romney marches in lock-step with Sarah Brady, Carolyn McCarthy, Paul Helmke, etc.
I will never vote for Mitt Romney. Ever.
Hmmm. What about “sufficiently hawkish to pursue the War on Terror”? The only ones I’d put as positives in that category are McCain, Hunter, and Giuliani, unless other freepers can enlighten me differently.
Ideological purity is a daily battle, but we have nothing to battle with if our party is out of power. Personalities often trump ideology.
Look at Bush, everyone reading this probably voted for him, and his record on your scorecard would be embarrassing.
The problem with politicians who take a less than pure conservative position, is that it eventually traps them, as happened to Bush on Dubia ports or immigration. Worse yet, the liberal policies reek havoc for society, as welfare did. Now welfare reform is beginning to show dividends, and even Democrats can’t go back.
If Fred had been in the Senate, we would have sided with John Kyle and McCain, both his friends, and shoved immigration amnesty down our throats.
I have found that it is more practical to argue for conservatism at every opportunity, and eliminate a liberal policy down whenever possible. After all, it was under Clinton that we got both a balanced budget and welfare reform. And under George Bush we got a runaway budget, and broken borders.
If somebody is a flip flopper, isn’t it a little hard to also count his former positions against him?
Phil Gramm and Jack Kemp are supporting McCain. You can say what you want about Jack Kemp now, but Gramm is certified conservative supply-sider.
I just took a peek at the results so far. I’m disappointed but not surprised.
There is a reason the Republican Party has fallen so far.
When your supporters don’t care what you do, why chance losing your job fighting for principle?
My view is that neither Thompson nor Hunter campaigned in NH, so the vote their is indicative of nothing (except that NH doesn’t like Romney).
Huck and Queeg are definite no go’s for me. Rudy will also destroy the GOP and I thought that he would also be a no go but after seeing Huck and Queeg up close, Rudy doesn’t look so bad so he is a maybe. I don’t like Mitt but I’ll barf and vote for him if he gets the nod.
Please God don’t force me to choose evil, give me Fred or Duncan and I promise never to drink again.
Please understand ... I WILL NOT SUPPORT ANYONE ELSE!!!! I'd rather let the democrats win and screw things up, then MAYBE the republicans will wake up to this filth that has overtaken the party.
Same here. I dee[ly resent the republican leadership right now for putting the party base in this untenable position. It’s like they’ve said “This is what you get, or nothing”, and we have to gulp and make the best of it (as they’re counting on), or know that our none-vote helped put a ‘rat in the White House. I consider the position they’ve put us completely corrupt.
This poll, as framed, is multi-choice.
Or if you look at it from a different perspective, the question is badly worded.
I am trying to come up with a better poll, or polls, with more precise questions, and definitive answers.
If I can figure an alternative, I will ping you again.
...You forgot Thompson!
I may not know what I’ll do until I’m actually in the voting booth. Could I vote for McCain whilte tightly holding my nose? I don’t know. Because I really feel like “two is a deal-breaker.” “Three’s not even a consideration.”
Good point, thanks for giving the motivation to hold my nose and vote for the (R) candidate, though I’m going to be cursing them and myself when they throw open our borders. Thank God we’ll still have our guns (no matter what they try to change that).
I think if everyone who said that they'd vote for Hunter if he were only electable voted for him because he's a conservative, he'd be in the top tier of the GOP candidates and then seen as electable to the presidency. Self-fulfilling prophecy, either way, imho.
