Scrapped Golden Globe ceremony hits Hollywood hard --- REUTERS

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hollywood scrambled on Tuesday to assess the fallout from the decision to scrap the glittering Golden Globe movie and TV awards ceremony and hold only a news conference that few stars are likely to attend.
Caterers, limousine drivers, stylists, hotels and dozens of magazines and TV shows found themselves out of work when this Sunday's star-studded Golden Globes gala dinner and red carpet walk-up fell victim to the nine-week-old screenwriters strike.
"There are a lot of people being hurt by this," said Jack Kyser, chief economist for the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp. He estimated the Golden Globes annually bring in $70-$80 million to the Los Angeles economy.
"A lot of the parties are being canceled and they can run up to $200,000 each. There is a big ripple impact from this in terms of hotel bookings, security guards, parking attendants, beauticians etc.," Kyser said.

No...it’s just that’s the way the market has worked for many, many years, and it’s only fair for the system of royalties, (which heretofore the studios have not disagreed with) to extend to new technologies as they are discovered and put into effect.

No, the writer’s strike is just another part of the changing market. Residuals and DVDs make up a huge percentage of the profits from which the writers are excluded. I don’t know what kind of contracts that writers have now, but considering the vacuuous stars that resight the lines (equally vacuuous) that the writers write, maybe the writers deserve a larger share of the profits or blame.
I’ve been thinking about this since yesterday, when they announced that the blue-ray format had won the dvd wars. Of course it won, it can’t be copied, it costs more and can only be fully appreciated on FULL high definition sets. If you bought one of the cheaper, non-full definition sets, you’re out of luck.
I’ve always thought what these people felt was “best” was usually crap. I think the world will be fine without some Ivory Tower types telling us what’s good.
Corporate union employees don't deserve a penny of that revenue. Don't be a union member and/or agree to work for a corporation if you want to own your work/patents. Furthermore, as these union writers are going to discover, there are plenty of other people willing to write garbage for Hollywood at less than their current pay. It's called "THE FREE MARKET," another formerly protected class of people are going to discover they aren't near as special as they think they are.
Every one of these writers can freelance if they want. Why don't they? Then they'll own all their own work and get paid what its worth.
Should your maid be paid for cleaning your shower, or should your maid be paid for not only cleaning your shower, but also paid for every shower you take after it's clean?

I don’t agree. Historically artists, actors, writers, singers, authors, etc., have gotten royalties on their work.
I see nothing wrong with the system as currently practiced.

Story of my life, my GI Joes would have bought me a new car if I still had my collection too.
That is too bad though, if you knew how much detail went into the older molds they are truly works of art, unlike the tools generated today by CAD/CAM and etching. that was a time of true craftsmen, now they are built by someone who knows how to set up a vice and push a button, and another guy who can solid model off of a scanned part. As the true craftsman are dying off and retiring no one can ever step up and fill all that skill they are leaving with, its and end of an era in this business.
Also, the moulds from that era were milled out of steel and were a major investment for the model companies (I have read about “average sized” moulds costing $150,000). The moulds are still expensive, but a lot of them are electrically milled copper or copper alloy (according to the model biz publications).
I can only imagine! I just use RTV to make moulds and can only imagine what it was like to mill a mould from steel.
Analogies aside — the writers work in a free market. Like everyone else, they want to get as much as they can for their work.
“Should” doesn’t enter into it. What’s fair is what they can get.
All they are...is anti-Bush anti military tirades stretched over 3 hours.

Sounds like a good weekend to me.
Just as long as IRON MAN, the new 007 movie and STAR TREK are finished, I don’t give a crap about the rest of the movies.
