The producers are making huge amounts of money on internet and DVD sales of TV shows, and the writers aren’t getting the royalties from those “broadcasts” that they do from the regularly-scheduled TV shows.

Corporate union employees don't deserve a penny of that revenue. Don't be a union member and/or agree to work for a corporation if you want to own your work/patents. Furthermore, as these union writers are going to discover, there are plenty of other people willing to write garbage for Hollywood at less than their current pay. It's called "THE FREE MARKET," another formerly protected class of people are going to discover they aren't near as special as they think they are.

Every one of these writers can freelance if they want. Why don't they? Then they'll own all their own work and get paid what its worth.

I don’t agree. Historically artists, actors, writers, singers, authors, etc., have gotten royalties on their work.

I see nothing wrong with the system as currently practiced.
