Scrapped Golden Globe ceremony hits Hollywood hard --- REUTERS

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hollywood scrambled on Tuesday to assess the fallout from the decision to scrap the glittering Golden Globe movie and TV awards ceremony and hold only a news conference that few stars are likely to attend.

Caterers, limousine drivers, stylists, hotels and dozens of magazines and TV shows found themselves out of work when this Sunday's star-studded Golden Globes gala dinner and red carpet walk-up fell victim to the nine-week-old screenwriters strike.

"There are a lot of people being hurt by this," said Jack Kyser, chief economist for the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp. He estimated the Golden Globes annually bring in $70-$80 million to the Los Angeles economy.

"A lot of the parties are being canceled and they can run up to $200,000 each. There is a big ripple impact from this in terms of hotel bookings, security guards, parking attendants, beauticians etc.," Kyser said.

Looks like viewers will have to go to the zoo to see the freaks of nature.

I support the writer’s demands. The producers are making huge amounts of money on internet and DVD sales of TV shows, and the writers aren’t getting the royalties from those “broadcasts” that they do from the regularly-scheduled TV shows.

I hope they win this strike...

I would think their script would be finished and the strike wouldn’t affect the project, but for whatever reasons, his work has slowed way down.

Scripts are a work in progress even after the cameras start rolling.

"Now THAT is an AWESOME NAME for a ROck Band!!!!"

I picked up the term "glitterpig" from a recent Moonbattery article about Naomi Campbell's endorsement of Hugo Chavez.

With regard to names for rock bands, the best I've ever heard was a local one (Seattle area) called The Range Hoods.

Yep, they even had a great picture of the “flying sub” I was going to put up too, man I loved that show as a kid.

I had that model as a kid but she took a broadside from the Bismark (cherry bomb) and then caught fire with lighter fluid and sank...

Thanks for the photo.

The toy I had was a yellow-colored sub with a wind-up rubber band motor and a propeller in the rear. Perfect for bathtub naval exercises.

Hollywood “survived” “having” to cancel the MTV presidential innauguration balls in 2001 and 2005 because of “not knowing” who the victor of those elections would be.

They are free to celebrate at home. And no one will know if they bought annecdotes and “off the cuff” jokes from a paid writer in some back alley.

Why wont they just share internet profits with writers? Just bizarre.

A lot of the parties are being canceled and they can run up to $200,000 each.

Surely they can think up reasons to still have their parties. How about throwing a party for veterans or something like that?!

If the writers get paid to write a broadcast TV show why should they get paid more when the show is sold on DVD? If for some reason the internet/DVD sales lose money, should they then take a loss as well?
