Evangelicals Against Mitt
The American Spectator ^ | 1/3/2008 | Carrie Sheffield

Posted on 01/08/2008 4:09:13 PM PST by tantiboh

Mitt Romney is facing an unexpected challenge in Iowa from rival Mike Huckabee, who has enjoyed a groundswell of support from religious voters, particularly evangelical Christians wary of the clean-cut former Massachusetts governor because of his Mormon religion.

The common worry among evangelicals is that if Romney were to capture the White House, his presidency would give legitimacy to a religion they believe is a cult. Since the LDS church places heavy emphasis on proselytizing -- there are 53,000 LDS missionaries worldwide -- many mainstream Christians are afraid that Mormon recruiting efforts would increase and that LDS membership rolls would swell.

...

THE ONLY PROBLEM with those fears is that they don't add up. Evangelicals may be surprised to learn that the growth of church membership in Massachusetts slowed substantially during Romney's tenure as governor. In fact, one could make the absurdly simplistic argument that Romney was bad for Mormonism.

...

ONE WAY TO GAUGE what might happen under a President Romney would be to look at what happened during the period of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Held in Salt Lake City, they were dubbed the "Mormon Olympics."

...

Despite all the increased attention, worldwide the Church grew only slightly, and in fact in the year leading up to the games the total number of congregations fell. Overall, from 2000 to 2004, there was a 10.9 percent increase in memberships and a 3.6 percent increase in congregations.

...

The LDS church is likely to continue its current modest-but-impressive growth whether or not Romney wins the White House. Perhaps the only real worry for evangelicals is that, if elected, the former Massachusetts governor will demonstrate to Americans that Mormons don't have horns.

Carrie Sheffield, a member of the LDS Church, is a writer living in Washington, D.C.

They never recanted their testimony even though some left the church and went other directions.

Dang!

You'd think that knowing the TRUTH would have kept them in the LDS Organization for SURE!!

Pointing out a huge heresy isn't the same as bashing. It's the truth.

You'd think a STRONG evangelical would know that...

That brings to mind the poem "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet".

A rose by any other name would be called something else.

Thank you for the links to the pages in the Catholic Encyclopedia.

I found the material about the Apostolic Christian Church. interesting.

Especially so where the passage describes their doctrine concerning the three persons.

I agree with their doctine.

I have asked you repeatedly to answer the question I posed to you.

When and how did the doctrine concerning the three persons as believed by the Apostolic Christians, change to what you believe now?

I get the feeling that the question is irrelevant.

Not unexpected.

As seen by past experience, you ACCUSE but fail to produce proof.

This does, by the way, place you firmly into the realm of bearing false witness.

Who KNOWS where this places you.

So many of the anti-Mormon posters focus on the Mormon doctrine of the Apostasy, as if that means that we think all other Christians and Christian churches are completely bad. That is surely not the case.

Then, LadyLawyer, you should be able to produce some PROOF that the LDS Organization has CHANGED IT'S MIND about what your Founder, Joseph Smith, so damning wrote these many years ago.

The jury awaits the evidence.

Our attackers are annoyingly vociferous, but small in number.

And extermely on target.

The information you gave me a link to explained that it was three separate persons, and that it was the doctrine taught by them.

You don't believe that now, so when and how did it change?

It is very much relevant to our discussions.

You have the link so you can go and check that I am not taking it out of context, or misquoting it.

I presumed it was good information or you wouldn't have referred me to it and given me the link.

AMPU, it happened again because he gave the contractor as second chance, based on the contractor’s word to clean up his act.

When the contractor failed to reform, he fired the company.

Romney did the right thing on both occasions - he gave a chance for reform, then fired the contractor when he failed to do so. All this despite the risk of political blowback.

~”I keep hearing how conservatives are favoring Mitt...”~

They do. The problem is moderate Republicans and independents. The polls you cite are not broken down to filter them out.

~”It ain’t looking all that positive yet for Willard.”~

Then you’ve nothing to worry about.

HITLERY NEVER HAD A JOB IN HER LIFE...
________________________________________________

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat ???

She was an attorney.....

But I have more news for your head...

Hillary is not on the Republican ticket ...Romney is

By the same token.....

Romney never had a job at McDonalds in his life...

he never worked his way through college

He hires illegal aliens...

He wants to give the illegal aliens a pathway to citizenship

He claims we cant send them back home

That means an AMNESTY Bill in 2009 IF he is POTUS

That meansd illegal aliens would have FREE college and your children and grandchildren would have to wash more dishes to get through college

BTW its a lot easier to get straight As when you dont have to work your way through college...

I was often on the Dean’s list even though I had to work...

I wonder if Mr Brilliant Student Romney would have kept up his grade average if he had had to ruin his manicure...

MANICURE !!!!!!!! Yep, hes a girly-man

Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
